I got the opportunity to visit the Zion Union Heritage Museum while on vacation. The tour company…read morethat my Meetup group used included this stop on the tour while in Hyannis. The museum used to be a church, the Zion Union Church and the museum is about nine years old. We got to meet two members of the board of directors as well as the co-author of "Icons of the Civil Rights Movement--Dispelling White Privilege." The admission fee is inexpensive--just $5.00 for adults, $4.00 for seniors and $3.00 for children 10-17. It's the only museum that I'm aware of that showcases the history of African-Americans and Cape Verdeans in New England (I could be wrong, though). It's not a large museum but I still felt like I needed more time (we could only stay for an hour due to other activities scheduled for the day). The museum had many paintings about people integral to the Civil Rights Movement but that you might not necessarily be aware of. They have a gift shop that's worth checking out. I purchased the book from the co-author and she autographed my copy. The book was $29.95 and 40% of the costs went back to the museum. My one issue is with one of the board of directors--she said on several occasions that we are not the African American museum in DC, and that's okay. Umm, are you sure it's okay? The museum doesn't have to be. No one was trying to compare this museum to the one in DC. Also, our Meetup group came from the DMV (District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia)--so we wouldn't confuse the two. It's okay that the museum is not like the one in DC--anyone visiting will still leave learning something. Anyway, I highly recommend visiting the museum. If you're in the area, please check it out, I think you'll be glad you did.
