    Us and our finished paintings
    Tina S.

This was such a wonderful experience, I have never painted before in my life, so this was fun to give it a try. I thought my painting would be horrible and couldn't understand how it was going to work. The teacher was funny, friendly, and lighthearted, she was also so helpful. I took my husband and he was the only man, but he enjoyed himself too. I love that they do this at a bar on their slow nights to help bring them some business, it's kind of neat. We painted at Zest, an organic gluten free bar. We decided to hold off eating dinner due to there bit being much room, but did get the hummus veggie appetizer, it was good, and of course some alcohol. Overall, I recommend this to all :)

    Whiskey Barrel Terrarium Class

My friend was visiting from out of town and we both wanted to try something new, so we took the Whiskey Barrel terrarium making class and had a wonderful time! The instructor was absolutely amazing and patient with us as it was our first time. She explained everything well. We had a blast making them and were so happy with how they looked at the end! We also loved the venue. Hoping to take another class very soon!

Imagine a room full of creative wannabes, a hilariously talented instructor, friends, drinks, bar food, easels and paint. Now are you smiling? Well, I was and still am! I had a blast! Despite not being that great of a painter, I can't wait to do it again. Our instructor was Henry Tanaka and he skillfully directed a room full of people to paint and have fun! A must do activity with friends or family!

Me and my husband had a wonderful experience with plant Nite ! This is such a fun idea for date night and loved the result of our planters. Although the restaurant it was held in was not very good and the waiter was horrible! We never got our drinks until we were half way through the night. Would definitely do plant nite again in the future though.

i came here with sylvia m. so we could check out this new plant nite event. it's from the same company as paint nite and you can make reservations on their website. the concept is that they have these events at different bars and restaurants around the city, so you can drink and eat while participating. we had both bought groupons, but if you pay full price it's $45. plus they charge you an additional $10 for supplies. trust me, $55 total is not worth it for this event. i spent a total of $35 with my groupon and i felt so ripped off afterwards. i can't imagine anyone paying full price for this. we chose a table and they passed around the containers we'd be using. we were given instructions and then each table was allowed to go up to the material section to start creating their terrarium. first we put rocks in, then dirt, then they passed around succulents. afterwards, we put moss and colored rocks on top. the instructor later came around to let us each pick one plastic dinosaur to put in our completed terrarium. the event itself seemed awkward and disorganized. there was a lot of time that felt wasted while we were just waiting for our turn to go get our materials. it was hard to eat bar food as your hands are dirty from being in the dirt. you could wash your hands, but then you'd be touching rocks/dirt/moss again. plus the colored moss stains your hands, so be careful with that. i think a better system would be to have all the material on the individual tables already or to have several stations set up instead of just one for like 30 people. i wasn't a fan of plant nite and wouldn't come back. paint nite is way more fun and it feels more interactive.

Came here with the girlfriend and my parents and we all had a great time! It was entertaining, a fun group of people, the teacher was a lot of fun and helped the group stay positive. I don't have an artistic bone in my body and was still happy with my painting! I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking to try something different in SLC.

Such a fun night! Turns out painting and drinking is totally relaxing. I was very surprised when my boyfriend agreed to go with me to something like this and even more surprised that he had such a great time. We will definitely be doing this again.

We love paint nite. This was our 3rd time doing it. All at different locations. This time it was at Bar Down in West Jordan. Met the bar owner and Selina is very nice. We arrived early and got a few drinks and chips and salsa. I would suggest arriving to Paint Nite early to reserve your seating, especially if you have more than a few in your group. Blossom was our instructor and she was fun. She told jokes and had a great sense of humor. She was very helpful and would come around to make sure we were mixing the colors the way we wanted them and to show us different techniques. Paint nite is great. They provide the paining idea, the canvas, the paints, the brushes, aprons and a location with drinks and food. We will definitely keep attending Paint Nite.

This was my first Paint Nite experience and it was hosted at Squatter's last Sunday afternoon. When I got there, I wasn't sure where the actual painting was going to take place since there were no signs and the dining area was completely full. After asking, it was nice to see that there was the entire upstairs area reserved just for the class. The instructors were really friendly and prompt when it came to getting everyone checked in. The materials provided were all brand new, and the instructions were communicated over a microphone so there was no difficulty with hearing. The class had a total of 40 people and was 2 hours long. I felt a little bit rushed at times, especially when I would run out of paint and have to wait for the assistant to come around and give me more, but with so many paintings around, it was easy to see what was needed to be done next. There were a couple of 5-10 minute breaks to allow our paintings to dry before moving on to the next step, but there weren't any dryers to speed this process if you were a little behind. Overall, this was a fun experience and a nice gift for one of my girlfriends even though painting is not high up on my list of things to do on the regular.

I found The Art Cottage and learned that they do watercolor classes-and figured I'd give it a try. You do need to call or go online to reserve your spot-space is limited. I called and was able to get in easily for the day and time that worked for my schedule. I showed up a few minutes early and was setup at my station with paint, paper & brushes. I was ready to go! The class was brief-I learned a few basic strokes and techniques in watercolor. Gradient painting where you start very light and work your way into the darkest version of a color. I also learned the "wet on wet" and "wet on dry" techniques and when it would be appropriate to use each. I also learned how to fix mistakes and turn them into more intentional pieces of the art. I really channeled my inner Bob Ross turning things into birds and clouds. After the instruction, I was set loose to do a painting. There were some binders full of examples to provide inspiration, but no step by step instruction, which is different from other canvass/acrylic painting classes I've done elsewhere. I applied the techniques I had learned in the lesson and some suggestions from the instructor. Although my painting might not be one worthy of hanging in a gallery, I enjoyed myself and would recommend taking a class to anyone who might be mildly interested in watercolor.

It doesn't take any artistic ability, but if you do have such a trait, you can put it to use here as well. What I'm saying is that anyone can enjoy this place-and you should! First, you select the size of canvass that you want to paint. Then, you select up to five paint colors. There are lots to choose from and you can walk around the gallery to see other art and get some inspiration. Depending on what style you like, you'll be guided by a friendly staff member on how to pour your paint onto the canvass and then tilt it in a way that will achieve your desired outcome. It's a fun process and a bit mesmerizing to watch. For an extra fee, they can add resin to the finished piece, which will make it shiny. It certainly makes the colors pop and I'd recommend it. My only complaint is the price. Sure, you're making a one of a kind work of art. But the price point is steep and will certainly eliminate some people from participating. But if you can swing it, I'd recommend you save your pennies and give it a go.

Just this past year I have used charcoal, chalk pastels, watercolor, Prismacolor markers and acrylic to name a few. The teachers are friendly and knowledgeable. I had such an incredible time at Crafted Rings! I love the idea of being able to create my own…read morering, and Cole took me step-by-step through the process and helped me to do as much as I could on my own. Now I have not only a cool new ring but something I can say I crafted myself! After selecting a design, the first step of the process was hand carving the ring out of wax - making the ring big enough for my finger and shaping the pattern on the outside. All the necessary tools were provided and were easy to use, especially with Cole's tips and expertise. (As someone with very limited experience with creating anything by hand, I very much appreciated this!) This step had the most amount of time allocated to it, and does require a degree of delicateness with the wax and patience with the process and with yourself. Luckily, Cole was also able to help undo or cover up mistakes (or weld the ring back together when the wax snapped - which definitely didn't happen five or six times ) Next, we used the wax ring to create a sand mold into which the silver for the ring could be poured. This doesn't take long, but prepping the mold also requires some delicate work. Again, Cole was there to help with corrections and mistakes. Since I was there by myself, I may have had a chance to be a bit more involved in preparing the silver for pouring into the mold than a group may have been able to. After the mold was ready, we used a torch to melt the silver and Cole poured the silver into the mold in one smooth, expert motion. The ring formed and cooled quickly, so within a minute or so we were putting the finishing touches on the final product. Finally, after some "pruning," sanding, and polishing, I have an awesome ring I can truly call my own! If you've ever wanted to craft something yourself worthy of being an heirloom that you could truly cal your own, or if you're looking for a meaningful gift of jewelry that isn't marked up to ridiculous prices just to take advantage of you, (OR if you just want to experience imagining yourself forging your own Ring Of Power in the fires of Mount Doom) I can absolutely recommend Crafted Rings!
