First of all, I'm a woman with a short haircut. I was sick and tired of going to the chain salons because I would get a different person every time. Despite the stylist notes that they have, I would end up with a different, awful haircut every time. They seem to hire those who are fresh out of school who have nearly zero experience with different hair types. Even those stylists who have a lot of experience don't seem able to give me a decent haircut. I guess they're working at those places rather than higher-priced salons for a reason. Finally, since I have a short cut, I figured I'd see if an experienced barber could do a better job. I started going to Tommy, the owner, because he had been my husband's barber for many years and always did such a wonderful job on his hair which was very thick like mine. Let me tell you, the very first haircut he gave me was like the difference between night and day compared to those awful chain salons and his prices are even the same as them! I'll keep going to Tommy for as long as he continues to work. If you're a woman with short hair, like me, ditch whatever salon you're currently patronizing, save yourself some money and patronize Yates Barber Shop instead. You definitely won't regret it. Not only are the barbers/stylists working there happy to cut a woman's hair, not even ONCE have I ever felt uncomfortable going there for any reason. Most of the barbers/stylists are women and ladies, it's not how you might imagine a barber shop atmosphere to be. The male customers don't sit around bashing women, complaining about their wives or girlfriend's, bragging about their latest conquests, talking about sports or sex or anything else you might imagine. The atmosphere is low-key and fairly quiet. Tommy usually has the TV on an educational or travel channel rather than the latest sports game or any other male-interest channel. Tommy even has a massage recliner that you can insert cash into while you wait! He truly is a wonderful man. He considered my husband to be not only his customer, but also a friend. That feeling extends to me as well and is mutual. After my husband passed away in October 2024, Tommy made sure that I knew that he was always there for me. Unfortunately, I collapsed the day after my husband's funeral in November 2024 and spent most of the next year either in the hospital, physical rehabilitation facilities or skilled nursing facilities. I'm only 57 but 100% VA disabled due to 2x exposure to Sarin nerve gas during the First Persian Gulf War. While I was away from home, my phone died completely and because my new phone uses a different SIM card, I lost all my contacts, including both the barber shop's number and Tommy's personal cell phone number. Another great thing about Tommy is that if one of his customers is hospitalized or in any other facility, he has a travel kit and is willing to go to whatever facility you're in and give you a haircut there. All he needs is for there to be a standard chair available for his customer to sit in as he cuts their hair. I believe that he only does this for his most loyal customers. Most of his customers are unwilling to go anywhere else once he cuts their hair for the first time, to include me. You simply can't find a better barber shop anywhere. ALL of Tommy's barber/stylists are both experienced and outstanding. read more
