If you guys have tried taking your pet to an emergency clinic, you know rare it is that a hospital will give you a specific time to come. Usually they tell you to come wait in a parking lot for an unknown amount of time for at least 3 hours. I usually take my cat to the humane society, but they were closed from the snow. Thank goodness this clinic was open. The biggest difference between VCA and the humane society is that when you call VCA, you speak directly to a person at the front desk. At the humane society, you are put on hold for a long time, then you talk to someone at a call center who then puts your message in the system and then you wait for the vet to eventually call you back. VCA is very accessible and available. We saw Dr. Bruemmer and she was so kind. She explained his status clearly and comforted us saying we did everything we should have to take care of our cat. They sent us home with pills for the cat to take, which is difficult because they always spit it up. The technician offered that we could bring our cat in and they could give him the pill. I think it is so wonderful that they would offer to do this. When my cat's condition worsened, they sent us to a more specialized hospital and the vet contacted the new vet telling him we were coming and discussed my cat's condition. Unfortunately, my cat didn't make it. Dr. Bruemmer, who I had only seen for 2 visits and known for 24 hours, called me after finding out my cat's condition and wanted to see how I was doing. She spoke positive things about my cat's character and said we could talk or answer any questions I had. She is the most caring vet I have ever encountered. She legitimately cares about every animal she cares for even though she wasn't his primary vet.

After my cat's last rabies shot he appeared to have a reaction and I have been reluctant to let my…read morecat have further rabies shots. Around the same time my cat was diagnosed with severe kidney disease, which is common in older male cats and they often don't show symptoms until it nearly kills them. Therefore the cause of his extreme lethargy may have been due to kidney disease and not the rabies shot. Fast forward 18 months. The previous vet clinic had closed and my cat's records were transferred to VCA Bal-Coeur, I might have to board my cat and I either needed a statement that my cat could not medically have a rabies shot or else he had to have a rabies shot. i took my cat to VCA Bal-Coeur for a wellness exam, shots and a nail trim. The doctor and the vet tech were both very nice, and my cat was calm when they did his weight and external exam. By law they had to give him a rabies shot but they also gave him antihistamine and antinausea meds before the rabies shot just in case. I brought them my cat's fecal sample for analysis, And they were also to do a blood draw for analysis and clip his nails. They then took the cat and his carrier to another room for the remainder of the exam. When they brought him back 30 minutes later, they said that they were unable to draw blood or clip his nails and I would have to bring him back for another visit and premedicate him with gabapentin. It was clear my cat was very anxious or frightened. Many people have remarked on how unusually laid back my cat is. I have always been in the room with him during the entire wellness exam. As long as he's getting treats and he can put his head against me, he's always accepted a lot of probing, shots and nail clipping. So my question to them was what happened when I wasn't there and I really didn't get a good answer except that they said they could tell when he was "done"and they didn't want to further traumatize him. If he was traumatized by 3 shots, I'm not taking my cat there again to be traumatized by a blood draw, a distemper shot and nail trim. Also VCA charges a lot for traumatizing a cat - they gave me an estimate of 762,90 - 953.63 for everything they were supposed to have done. The charge for what they actually did - the wellness exam, fecal analysis and rabies shot was $358.70.

I had started going to this vet when (after my fabulous review) my regular vet was getting so busy…read morethey could not take pets in on same day calls. So I started using RRAH because they were close and they had same day appts. They were passable. In my most recent experience, I took my dog London in for a shot for her allergies (she is so itchy, poor thing) and asked they pay special attention to her ears. They found a hematoma in her ear that they were afraid would progress into the ear canal and started hounding me about surgery. Since I was unprepared and, unfortunately, poor, I had to consider what they were asking, but they continued to hound and harass me about what I was going to do. I finally had to explain that this was a lot of money for me ($600ish) and that I would have to work on getting the funds together and get back to them. When they brought out the estimate, the tech also continued to badger me about scheduling the procedure. I also want to note that my pet had increasingly become skiddish and wary of going into this vet which was NEVER an occurrence prior. And in this case, I might understand why. From outside in the parking lot (Covid rules) I could hear my dog crying and yelping while being examined. I did get the money together and scheduled her for the procedure. She went in, got it done, and was sent home with a cone on her poor head and some medicine and warned that if she started shaking her head to contact them. What do you know, what they warned me about occurred and I contacted them immediately. Going by the timer on my phone, I was put in hold for nearly 20 minutes, when they picked up, I had a question for which they put me on hold for a little over 10 minutes. They asked me to come in and get some medicine for her. I was not informed of the price or even that there would be a price since the success of the surgery depended on her not shaking her head - and there is a medicine specifically designed for just that which, for the life of me, I cannot understand why this medicine was not sent home with London in the first place. Since no mention of cost or price was elaborated upon, we packed up (we were camping) and came straight to the vet. Luckily I had money on me because, surprise, there WAS a cost involved. A minor cost, but one that I was never made aware of. At the vet, more time on hold as I was put on hold for 8 minutes when I called upon arrival, and 3 additional minutes when I had questions. Finally this was all resolved while we sat in the parking lot and they were to bring the meds out to me (again Covid rules) after I paid, which I did. The girl handed me the bag, did not say thank you and did not express an iota of concern for my dog who was with me. If they had a problem with me, I get that, I was grumpy, but not rude. I was concerned that London was in pain and that her pain might lead to her undoing the procedure she just had. But this is a professional medical establishment and to act in that manner and not even take a GLIMPSE at my dog (no Vet contact on this at all, vet would not come to the phone, hence why all the hand offs to people who had to turn around and go back and ask them). Just here are your pills, no instructionson taking the meds, no thank you, no "aww poor thing". I have to do better for London and it starts here. No more Rock Road. They are concerned primarily with UPSELLING and high pressure sales tactics. London has been giving me clues that I have been hesitant to acknowledge until now. If you have read this far, take your pets to Overland Animal Clinic on Lackland.

Then they wanted to take her away for the catheter and almost dropped her. At that point it got heated on both sides and they were very rude and threatened not to do the procedure while knowing my dog was suffering. Nasty nurse at a time we were suffering.
