This bar was pretty cool. Being off the main road actually makes it pretty quiet, and a rather nice place to sit and relax with a beer. They even some some rather decent beers on tap as well. Okay, I was here earlier in the week, which was probably why it was quieter than normal, but still, it is out of the way, and in a sense I would put it down as a hidden bar. At first I was little apprehensive to set foot in this place - as it was full of those that are one past hipster - not sure how to explain them - punk? I'm such a suburban white male. But the scary bald men in their suspenders are super lovely. It's all counter service, which is great as so many places like this try to do table service and just suck. It's all 'dude food' here. But it's pretty good. All the burgers come out on brioche. I've heard the wings are great. The portions (espeically the nachos) are ridic large. There's nothing to write home about. But it's good. When my friend, who is the 2008 Ultimate Chicken Wing Challenge winner at Hooters (Gold Coast) posted a Facebook status "Brisbane's new undisputed home of Buffalo wings - at Yard Bird Ale house", I knew I had to ditch my plans to cook at home and check it out. Nestled in behind the Central Brunswick Apartment, the Yard Bird Ale House is a great open spot with plenty of tables outside and bar or lounge seating inside. It was already 8:30pm on a Wednesday night but they assured me the restaurant stayed open til late, which makes a great place for late night feasting. I love the bird theme throughout the place - Hitchcock's The Birds was playing on the big wall-mounted TV and there are birds on the walls, the bar and on the cushions on the lounges. There are also some amazing artwork pieces, but I'm told this is the owner's personal collection and they will be soon be starting a monthly art showcase, where artists can display their work throughout the venue for a month at a time. We were damn hungry so we split a plate of wings (Original Buffalo), a bowl of sweet potato fries and the Trio of Sliders. The sliders are definitely my recommendation if you're indecisive or just want to try a bit of everything. There are mini versions of The Big One (beef burger), Caribean Jerk Chicken Sandwich and the Rosemary & Garlic Spiced Lamb burger. The Original Buffalo sauce has a bit of heat, but is not overbearing. The ranch and blue cheese dressing is delicious and cooling if needed. The sweet potato fries were super tasty but personally I would have loved them more with a bit of salt on them. The sliders were not really that mini at all, and required quite a bit of a squishy down to fit in my mouth. But that's what makes a good burger! My favourite of the night was the Lamb burger with feta cream dressed rocket on a sweet potato and onion sour dough roll - amazing! The house chilli jam was mind blowing. The only thing that was a let down was the coleslaw, which I felt was just a bit bland. But who goes to eat the coleslaw anyway?! I was back in again the next day with work mates and we enjoyed the great range of beers and cider on tap (Monteith's crushed apple cider is so refreshing). The group ordered a variety of sandwiches and burgers and I was amazed at how big they were. Priced at only $14, they are some of the best value burgers out there. Good luck fitting it in your mouth! The venue is open all day from 11am to midnight, so it's perfect for lunch, dinner or just an afternoon of beers. I spoke to the staff about my wing eating champion friend and they told me they might be organising a Wing Eating Tournament in the future! I'm super excited for that! They also do a Sunday special that features 50c wings (half price) and $5 schooners of beer and cider. The Yard Bird Ale House has not been open for long, but I think this place has got the right combination of opening hours, food, drinks and specials to become a popular Brisbane institution. I had to update my review, to give a shout out to the food at Yard Bird. I sampled their menu for this first time this weekend, and was blown away by everything I tried. The chilli cheese fries were excellent (though the 'chilli' part is not an exaggeration), the wings and accompanying sauces were great, and the vegetarian pizza I sampled was amazing and great value. This is the tastiest and cheapest american/mexican style food I've come across in Brisbane, and when you can wash it down with a few cold beers or ciders ($5 schooners on Sunday!), what more could you ask for? read more

Oh my goodness! Yard Bird Ale House is a testament to the age old saying that a wise man once said once upon a time- THERE AIN'T NO THING LIKE A CHICKEN WING! As I sit in the groovy little ale house with some members of my lovely family, all conversation ceases as our food gets delivered. Chilli cheese fries covered in beef mince and jalapenos, beer battered parmesan and herb chips and 3 varieties of chicken wings (chipotle, buffalo and Caribbean) arrive at our table. I am happy to discover that my gluttony is hereditary as we absolutely annihilate everything on the plates. Attention all competitive egos: there's a newbie on the block which will kick-start your aggressive battle techniques. No, it is not the new craze in Germany which pits office workers against one another in modern-day gladiator attire. The Yardbird Ale House hosts competitions to end all competitions - for zealous eaters with tongues of steel and stomachs of endlessness. I am of course talking about the ultimate gastronomic-consumption challenge - the Death Sentence Wing Challenge. These unassuming portions of chicken appendages look positively harmless (and taste positively harmless) until about three mouthfuls in - then the forehead sweats start in conjunction with a numbing of all senses (blurred vision, muffled hearing, loss of sensation in hands and face). A challenge in itself is to finish one single wing without wanting to end your life, let alone as many as possible in 12 minutes (this is the competition which will be held on 25th January). Can't handle the heat, yet have a fiery, bottomless pit for a belly? Then perhaps tackle the Yardbird Burger Challenge. It's currently in creation, but looks like it'll feature a bun, mountain of onion rings, several meat patties, jalapenos, coleslaw and sauce. Or if you just want a sneaky craft beer and serve of delicious, American-style fried goodness, then you've also come to the right place. Sunday sessions here are fantastic - grab yourself a $5 tap beer, 50c chicken wings (go for the honey BBQ sauce if you want to avoid the burning Wings of Death) and a seat underneath paintings of tattoo designs. Make sure you go early if it's a busy night or Sunday session, tables always fill up. You can also call ahead and make a reservation. Sundays are the best- you get $5 beers and ciders- make sure you pair it with their amazing buffalo wings. If recommend their original buffalo wings. Warning- their death wish wings are NO JOKE! As many have pointed out your first impression of Yard Bird Ale House might be chicken wings, craft beer (check out their Sunday 'craft'ernoon sessions with $5 pints) and tattoo-art decor. And amongst card-carrying hipsters, the curious and regular Saturday night Brunswick St riff-raff we ventured into Yale Bird Ale House ready to try something new. It wasn't busy and we easily nabbed ourselves a seat on the outdoor bench table. The menu is simple and the big standouts are burgers and pizza. My dining companions chose burgers, where I went for the garlic and parmesan chicken wings with a side of coleslaw (PS. The coleslaw is the bomb. I don't want to know what they do with the dill in it but it is delicious!). And here's where things get awkward. Having waited almost 40 minutes for our meal on a not so busy night we were told by our lovely waitress that there were no chicken wings. Their order had not arrived that day. This would have been nice to know when we ordered. She offered me anything on the menu to make up for it and the next round of drinks were on her. A generous offer and she was so apologetic that it was hard to be disgruntled for too long. That said, overall it took about 60 minutes for our meals to arrive. Still, when all is said and done, Yard Bird is a place to spend a leisurely few hours catching up with mates. It's not cheap, not super pricey, the crowd is a combination of young and old - so all feel welcome, it is not warm in the winter and the staff are ok. Came here to experience southern styled food. Instead the moment I walked through the door both my friend and I felt unwelcome - we got the impression we needed to be hipster or grunge. Being the first time we didn't know whether we had to wait to be seated or sit down, instead we just got looks from the staff. Following that we found a table and there were no menus, nor did anyone greet us or tell us where the menu was. After finding the menu on the bar, we had to get up and place an order the waitress came across as unfriendly and didn't crack a smile. The food was average and a can of soft drink was over priced - $5. I love this place. Craft beer, delicious beer/cider on tap and a great atmosphere. They refer to sundays as 'crafternoon' with cheap chicken wings and pints. What more could you want? Tuesday nights is pizza night, with $15 pizzas and a $5 pint of beer special. I would highly recommend 'The Big One' burger. Oh my do I tell stories about this burger. Lets get straight to the point, I came here for the beer, not really the food. Yard Bird have 6 beers on tap, which both times I have stuck to the same breweries. Coopers, Burleigh Brewing, Monteith's Brewing, Little Creatures. They get their hands on some small batch and limited edition too. I have seen some floating taps the first time, but they were not hooked up and the staff had no idea what they were.. They have a decent range of bottled beer too, but nothing you can't get at Dan Murphys.. We came for the beer, but we got a bit peckish.. So we tried to order food... and.. If you go here, you will probably be as confused as we are.. Why this place continues to exist with the retards behind the bar and in the kitchen I do not know... As we have approached to order food (both times) we have been told that we cannot order at that time. We ask 'Why and when will we be able to order', they reply with soon. We sat down and drank another schooner. We then saw people order again, so we went up to order and were told again that we cannot order... We pried as to why the person before us could order and why we could not and they said the kitchen do not like to get too long of a list of dockets.. .. .. Why they just don't tell people, 'oh, the wait will be about half an hour on that' I do not know.. But they are not clear about anything that is going on. Both times I have experienced it there have been others there who are just as aggravated.. One person turned to us and said, 'this is why hipsters shouldn't run a bar'. If you do actually get to order though, the wings are quite good and they change the specials flavour of them. I have heard that they are a 'classic wet wing Chicago marinade style'. This place is Americana at its best. After spending two years in North America I had the feeling I'd have to wait to go back to get some decent Buffalo wings, but I was wrong. We had the traditional hot Buffalo Wings and also their crazy hot counterparts. I can handle a lot of heat, and traditionally anything called hot in Australia has been pretty tame but these wings were HOT! But the best part- it kept to the traditional wings flavours and tasted amazing. Having said that though, after four wings my lips, tongue and stomach had had enough! The traditional buffalo wings were just brilliant. Very much like the wings you get in North America. Well breaded and sauced, these things hit the table steaming hot and cooked to perfection. Paired with a cold crisp beer, they are by far the best wings I've had in Brisbane. I felt like I was back in the U.S. of A. Keeping to the theme we also had the sweet potato fries. Ours were slightly overlooked and not very memorable. But they were good to munch on while my mouth recovered from the last wing explosion! The atmosphere is all Australia though. Light, airy, decent service and the usual session drinkers making it lively. No big screen TVs or wooden bar fit outs here - that's left for you to experience when you actually go to North America. Just as the English rock group The Yardbirds brought together a stellar line-up including Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page and Eric Clapton, the Ale House inspired (perhaps) by the band have assembled an equally impressive trio: chicken wings, craft beer and cool tattoo-art aesthetics. This is the kind of place dreamed up by one of those cool dudes with sleeve tats, stretched earlobes and a penchant for Johnny Cash music. I checked it out on a Saturday night and the place was packed with people who'd, like me, had a little birdy tell them about this brand new Valley eatery/bar that does 50 cent chicken wings (sold in multiples of 6), including their ominously titled 'Death Sentence Wings', which carry some kind of ridiculous 8 star chilli rating (moderated of course by the International Council of Chilli Elders). I'm a spice-fiend myself so of course I ordered a ridiculous amount... The verdict -- they are genuinely spicy with a fine coating of chilli powder infused sauce which can really make your lips burn. The trick is to minimise the contact with your lips. Apart from being genuinely spicy these wings are also genuinely tasty, and not just hot for heat's sake. read more

This place was horrible. I booked a table for 8pm on a Saturday night. We ordered our food and half the table received their food within 30mins. The other half received their food within an hour and a half. An hour and a half to cook a few wings and fry some chips? Wow. When we asked the very rude waitress what the delay was she rolled her eyes, stormed off to the kitchen, talked to the chef and came back to tell us 'if we have a problem, we need to go INTO the kitchen and talk to the chef ourselves''. Top customer service guys. When I replied, I'd like to finish my meal first, as i've waited so long to receive it, she simply stormed off. The whole vibe and venue was very uncomfortable, unwelcoming and just scattered. We didn't finish our meals as it was a very awkward, unappetising experience. I had high hopes for this place. I am reviewing only on beer alone. I had thought a place called the yard bird ale house would have some amazing beers on tap but i was sorely disappointed. Don't get me wrong, they were a step up from XXXX and VB, but there was nothing out of the ordinary on tap. It may have been the day we went, but the fact the bar has jack daniels kegs on display (which are really cool btw), just made me feel they weren't 100% committed to being a beer bar. Good beer selection. Unfortunately, the staff are inexperienced and not customer focused. There was a miscommunication that led to us being sold the wrong product. The supervisor was more interested in surfing Facebook than managing and the barmaid was not familiar with the stock. After discussing the mistake at length the supervisor offered a replacement beer valued less than the price paid. We refused the offer and will not return. We wish them the best in future. I have found a good place where I can find Rogues Dead Guy Ale, sure it has been imported so the flavor is not as good as when I was in Portland but still helps this guy right off the ship get use to life down under. Food was pretty good and atmosphere was quite nice. read more

Absolutely loveddd the wings but my partner and I both had extremely burnt burger patties and couldn't finish them because of it. The smoke flavour took over any sauce or components that were on our burgers. Other than that I won't let a once off burnt pattie stop the 4 star rating. I've been here a couple times now, and haven't been disappointed. Although the food & the beer can be bit pricey when they aren't on special, it's the buffalo wings that keep us coming back. It is the closest I've come to finding similar buffalo sauce we have in USA. The aioli and ranch/blue cheese sauce (whatever it is) needs a lot of help. It's watered down and has no flavour. You can't go wrong with the beer and fries, however, I'm looking forward to trying the nachos and quesadilla. I'm a tough critic with Mexican food, so watch out! read more

Terrible! Will never return and have told everyone I know not to go. Heard good things, so few of us gave a shot, one in the group is a regular there. We ordered food and drinks, and sat outside. We wanted a Pizza as well, so ordered a take-away from next door. While eating the pizza, along with yardbird's wings, beer, cider, etc, an employee came out, and copping HUGE attitude, ran us off because of the pizza. We pointed out we were eating their food, drinking their alcohol, and wished to continue, which only served to increase this short-sighted idiot's rage toward us. So, we left. Moved one table over outside, finished the pizza, and went elsewhere to drink. He won! They will never again get any of out business (group of us gets together after work every Friday) because his alleged policy is what matters... Not serving the customer or even trying to maximize profits. Truly amazing. read more
