In the mood for some sushi after El Rastro, a good Yelp search lead me here! I walked by the Mercado de San Fernando a few times before realizing Yakenpon Washoku must be INSIDE the market. It's located in one of the back corners (to the left when you walk in) and hosts three tables and one long counter that combined can seat no more than twenty.
We waited for a couple of seats to open up before ordering, although you can easily order to go. If dining in, you order and pay at the counter and they'll bring the food to your table. I went with the chirashi bowl and a miso soup, while my fiancé got a roll, miso soup and pork gyoza.
The chirashi bowl was definitely my favorite out of everything we tried. With fresh pieces of sashimi cut fish atop perfectly cooked rice, I finished every last bite. There was some sort of seasoning sprinkled on the fish and a scoop of wakame salad that really knocked it up a notch. Honestly though, we enjoyed every last bite and you could really taste the quality of the ingredients.
It's amazing (and admirable) to see how they produce so much food from a tiny kitchen. I would definitely come back the next time I need a sushi fix in Madrid and would recommend making this, and the Mercado de San Fernando, a stop during your city food tour when you're tired of tapas! read more
