This is a top notch boat, captain and crew from boarding to filleting. This is absolutely my favorite fishing fleets in the northeast. The mates Matt and Hayden go above and beyond and truly know their trade. No matter the season or the trip they always find quality fish and I always leave with a packed cooler. My second to last trip I caught at least one of every species, Cod, Haddock, Pollock, Cusk, Hake and Whiting. Usually, I never leave a review on online platforms since I prefer to deal with the locals directly, and computers really aren't my thing. But for this one, I felt like I needed to speak up. I've been fishing for over 20 years with different crews in New York, Maine, and Rhode Island, and for the most part, I've always had good experiences. Unfortunately, this trip was one of the worst I've ever had. I understand fishing can be hit or miss, and a slow day on the water happens as that's part of the sport. What bothered me was the behavior of one of the staff members, a woman named Kelly who was working in the cabin. She was extremely rude to some folks on board, even yelling at someone about what to do with their catch and going after them outside. Then, as she walked back inside, she loudly said, "What the F###... Those Arabs," and continued mouthing off here and there. This was in front of families and children. I don't tolerate profiling or that kind of unprofessional behavior. It ruined the trip for me, and I won't be fishing with this company again. read more

Great Trip! Captain was Great. Mate Jeff was great! My husband caught 5 keepers and i caught 4 smalls and almost a good size Shark. The only thing i would mention is...dont go in the galley cause the beast doing the grill is nasty and she should get the boot unless her finacial situation is bad or shes the mate of one of the crew(poor fella). Been going here since I was a kid. Prices are awesome, boat is nice and clean, crew is above and beyond helpful. They do fillet your catch, there is a charge of $1 per fish, but beats doing it yourself! Burlap bags are available to "hold" your catch. Those bags do have a charge (forgot the price) just a whole lot of fun! First time or multiple time going, it is a blast! read more

Overcrowded boat. Crew are very unprofessional. When (not if) you tangle and the tangle is so bad that the crew have to cut your sinker and hook, you're charged $4 for a new hook. You'd think they'd provide a new one for free considering the price you pay for an 8 hour trip. Also no card accepted only cash, so our group of 14 couldn't buy some beers to get your mind off how crappy the service of the deck hands was. Would give 0 stars if I could. Went on the marathon trip and we caught a ton of Haddock, Pollock, Redfish, Hake, and a few Cod. One Cod was huge but we had to throw the Cod back because they're out of season. We definitely would of caught more if the dog fish weren't a problem but we still caught a plenty and the fish were delicious! All in all a pretty nice day :) read more

I've been on several charters in MA, NY, and CA. This one is the worst! For starters, they overbook their charters, to the point where there aren't enough rod holders to go around and you are shoulder to shoulder with other fishermen. Constant tangles! Sometimes the tangles are so bad the mates have to cut the lines...guess what--they charge you $3 for every sinker you lose, even if they are the ones who cut your line! Between tangles and dogfish I spent $9 in lost sinkers in addition to the $70 for the trip plus a few more bucks to rent their tackle. I purchased my tickets over the phone. They didn't tell me you can reserve which spot you want on the boat. So when we arrive we were told we needed to move from our spot because it was reserved. Would have been nice to know prior. They have a sign that reads you can only smoke in the back of the boat and only on the upper deck. That rule is not enforced. I had a group of chain smokers next to me for the entire trip. So instead of breathing in some nice salt air, I had to inhale second hand smoke for the entire trip, to include the mate's. The mate's were helpful, I'll give them that but they all seemed to be under the influence of something. They have a galley, which is run by a foul-mouthed barfly who obviously hates being there. She has her young son along with her, at one point she got into a friendly disagreement with another mate and shouted at the top of her lungs for him to "suck her d**k" right in front of her son and other kids on the trip. Nice. They didn't have rolls, so any burger, sandwich etc, you want had to be on English muffins. Twice the captain moved the boat from areas where people were catching fish, to areas where there were none. read more

My son and I did the half day fishing trip. The trip started at 1:30pm and was 4.5 hours long. It took one hour to reach the fishing spot and one hour getting back. The ride and view was nice and the crew were friendly and helpful but we didn't get any fish. The boat switched places twice, which cost us about an extra 20-30 mins of fishing time. That also means the first two fishing spots weren't good. Based on the process of filleting on our way back, they did about twenty two fish. On average each person get one fish or less. read more

Drove 6 hours from PA for jigging trip. Was semi skeptical because of poor Yelp and FB reviews. Unfortunately the reviews were accurate. Fishing is cramped/over crowded compared to other good boats in region. Captain put us on fish for 1st stop. After that he circled and idled for nearly 2 hours. There was one brief uncontrollable "slack tide" stop. We stopped briefly another 2 times and were told at 12:10 we had 10minutes left. This was supposed to be a 12 hour marathon fishing trip. 3 out 5 to 6 hours fishing 3 hours back?? Some people did ok, clearly most people felt screwed. Even the old timers were pissed. People work hard for fishing time and money DONT WASTE YOURS HERE. read more

We went out on a half-day fishing trip with my two young nephews on 8/3. There were six of us in our group and I don't have enough good things to say. I never post reviews or comment but had to after our experience and all the negative comments that almost caused us not to go. I'm not quite sure what the expectations are for a chartered fishing trip,but this exceeded our groups expectations by a long shot. The captain was helpful and explained what we were doing, the crew was there to help whenever we needed, and we caught fish within five minutes of every spot that we stopped. I'm not sure what these other folks that rated poorly were expecting. You're paying a discounted price when compared to a private charter. All I have to say is that the trip was wonderful and we created some lasting memories. read more

We took the all day fishing on a Saturday, 7/28/18. It was last minute and I booked online before reading the reviews. After reading the reviews, i thought we booked a trip on Captain Ahab's boat, geez, people need to lighten up. Our experience was great. We managed to put our name in the night before for a spot on the rear of the boat, which I would highly recommend. We left promptly at 7 am and after a 2hour boat ride, we had our line sin the water. Before we left the dock, the captain gave a brief overview: this is the slow season for fishing, not sure what we will get, so lower your expectations, overall it's been slow lately. So, I was not expecting much of anything. It turned out to be the direct opposite, we had nearly six keepers, mostly haddock and a couple of pollack by 10:30! Captain rotated through a couple of places and more fish were found. Clams worked great, we hit mainly haddock, red snapper and pollack, (caught a few huge cod that were let go as well as a couple of dog fish) the crew was always there in case of a tangle or gaffing a big one. I have to say, some of the reviews were harsh on the crew because of tipping. I don't get this. They work their butts off, what is the problem with asking for a tip? You tip Uber, you tip at Starbucks, you tip at Nantucket launch for a ride to your boat or to the dock, what gives on complaining about tips? Yes the older mate shakes his head when he gets a small tips and mumbles under his breath, but that is the authenticity to round out the experience. All told the crew had to have filleted about 150 fish, and some people did not have theirs filleted. This was really a great experience and I would recommend and go back. P.s. I don't know the crew, this was my first time deep sea fishing with this boat, and I have been on other deep sea fishing expedition. read more

Pro: The crew and captain handled the rough pre hurricane waters very well. Our trip was also successful in finding several varieties of fish in several different locations. Con: Captain and crew and staff were rude, ill tempered, and genuinely give the "I hate my job" vibe with every step they take. Notable Moment: Several of the lines on the side I was on became tangled. There we're about 6 of us knotted up. The captain was strangling us. He cut the hook and weight off my boyfriend's and then my fishing rod. He did the same for the other group of people tangled up. He quickly replaced their hook and weight. He was then off to help another passenger with a catch. We waited patiently and about 10 minutes later asked him if he could show us where or how to get another hook and weight. His reply was that he should be doing this (giving us a new hook) because something was suspicious about the while ordeal. I apologised to him that he felt we had done anything against regulation and explained that we were just involved in the tangle earlier. He said that it didn't seem right and the tangle seemed suspicious. He said he'd replace the hooks for us this once. It put such a bad taste in my mouth as to the climate and culture of the trip. Later in the trip a young man the crew helped untangle my line from someone else and he cut my hook and as he was replacing it I told him the captain told me I wasn't allowed a replacement because that meant something suspicious. Got the hook and weight anyways. So did everyone else, several times as the ship was packed and lines were crossed and easily tangled. Word of advice:: Captain on Sunday before labor day...lighten up, not everyone is out to get you or your crew. read more

I've been on my share of deep see fishing trips and this was unfortunately the worst. To start the journey the boat had to make a stop for ice for a later cruise. That's cool, surprised we didn't stop by dunks for coffee or cvs to pick up ointment too on our way out to sea. After said errand run, it was mentioned we would have extra time fishing to make up for it but we docked exactly on time coming back. So no extra time given but the later cruise now had ice so that's good. Next, we are finally fishing to realize all of the gear is busted. Along our side we had at least 4 hooks snapped and a reel fall off the rod. We only made one stop which seemed to be an hour tops. Just about everything pulled up was a shark with no real keepers. Also bathrooms were busted with no running water onboard which was nice. 2 stars for the cash bar though. It saved the day. read more

So I took my 17 year old son and his buddy out today. We were set to go on half day but due to maintenance needs they needed to cancel. I was shocked when they offered me full day for half day price and was glad we didn't need to cancel. Day was amazing. Fish after fish after fish and the mates were non stop. Super Friendly and helpful Captains choice of elevator music mixed with some sort of smooth jazz was the only complaint we had. Super fun trip! My husband and I went out for a half day on Sunday morning! The weather was PERFECT. The boat was clean and the crew was kind and helpful. There were 2 mates for about 20 people; although they were busy attending to people who caught fish, they found time to give you pointers and help in any way they could. We ended up catching 3 cod; they were unable to be kept due to population levels. In the end, we didn't bring any fish home (some people were bringing home 4+ fish) but it was worth the experience. We had a blast and would definitely voyage with Yankee Fleet again. Tip: make sure to bring cash for drinks, snacks, fish bag, etc. read more

The boat was fine and the trip was fine, this review is specifically for the 2 guys that worked on the boat. There was a young kid and an older guy. They were not helpful at all. As a first timer I had no idea what I was doing when I caught a fish. The older guy just kept telling me to get out of his way for the most part, and acted as if he did not have time to help me, focusing more on the smoking of his cigarette while working with guests. This place does not fail to remind you to tip them. It took the kid who cut my fish up for me about 2 minutes to do so and I gave him a 5 dollar tip. He just shoved it in his pocket without even a thank you. At no point did he smile or engage in any conversation other than pretty much "here's your fish, where's my tip?" They also both stand on each side of the stairs as you are exiting the boat waiting for a tip. Will not go again. read more

I wanted to write something about the fishing trip my father, sister and I took on October 8th, 2016. We are from the Upstate/North Country, New York. My father has gone on deep sea fishing trips many times and has spent quite a few of those trips with Yankee Fleet. This was my second time and my sister's first time deep sea fishing. We had to be there by 6:30 am and the ship left the dock around 8 am. It took close to two hours to get out far enough to start fishing, but I believe every group on the boat went home with fish that day. Between the three of us we might have had 3-5 keepers each and went home with enough fish that we were able to have a family dinner together and I took some home with me. We caught Pollock and Sea Perch. Some people caught Haddock. Cod was out of season. The weather was a little cold/cloudy, so dress warm because there is a lot of wind and spray coming up when the boat is moving. We had breakfast on the boat as there is a little cafe setup in the cabin of the boat. The cook was really friendly. So was a lot of the crew. I see reviews about the crew being rude, but the only time I saw them being the least bit "rude" was when they were trying to get people away from where the anchor needed to be pulled up. Pretty understandable seeing as it's their job to keep people safe. There were about four of them and sixty people catching fish/snagging their lines. The crew we had catered pretty well for having that many people and all of them had a great sense of humor and made sure everyone was having a good time. I remember one of the "mates" telling a little girl on the boat a story about a person catching 28 fish using only skittles. It was so cute! In addition to a full day of fishing we saw a seal near the dock, some dolphins and the people off the back saw a whale. Overall it was a great trip and I would love to bring my girlfriends out there next summer for something different. Some tips: There is no cell service. Bring someone you enjoy talking to or a book because it takes close to two hours to get out far enough to fish. The boat was at capacity (maybe 60 people) so if you are going to go on a trip it might be best to book in advance. If you like to have a little more elbow room, my dad said that there were trips that charge more and allow less people. Con: The reason I gave this experience a four instead of a five was because there was no warning about using jigs instead of bait when the reservation was made and my dad ended up having to run to find an ATM at seven in the morning. The cost of the jig was fourteen dollars a piece and I believe you got ten dollars returned if you brought the jig back at the end of the day. Bring a good amount of cash. It costs money to use their deep sea poles, the jigs, for the crew to clean the fish for you and it's common courtesy to tip them. read more

By far one of the worst fishing experiences I have ever been on. I've have done multiple fishing trips including hyline in Hyannis and France's fleet in Narraganset and this was the worst. We were told prior to the trip that they were catching everything and keeping many to take home. This was not the case on the actual trip and the mates kept stating that "you would be lucky to catch a keeper." One of the mates was rude. Many of the fish were legal but they would throw them back without even measuring. They went into my cooler and took the one fish I caught and threw it back. This was my first and very last trip on this fleet. If you want a good fishing experience go to hyline or France's fleet. read more

I'm giving three stars because we left with fish~ which was the reason we went on the boat. It was packed although that didn't bother me. I went with my husband son Mom and her boyfriend. When we got there we were charged 7$ a rod, no biggie. At one point my husband and sons lines got snagged under the boat with someone's line on the other side. They were instructed by a young deckhand to let out some slack so they could retrieve the tangled mess on the other side of the boat. When that was done my husband and son were left with nothing but line. An older gentleman came by and asked where the sinkers were and when my husband explained he said "I had nothing to do with that, I need 6$ for the sinkers". Back and forth they went and the guy finally said "I'll pay for his (my sons) out of my pocket. You need to give me 3$. Back to fishing we went. It was fun. Now for 1$ a piece you can get a burlap bag to store your spoils of the sea in. For another 1$ you can purchase a bag to put your filets in. There's a 1$ fee per fish to filet along with the expectation of a tip. Ok. I usually tip when getting off the boat but if that's what you want no problem. As we were heading back, two young men began to clean the boat with bleach and soap. The water was running into peoples bags of fish and the passengers were ushered to the front of the boat. I decided to take up a spot and watch the guys clean the fish up. I observed on almost ever occasion the older gentleman collecting the $ for the fish along with the tip we were urged to hand over, count the money and stuff it in his pocket with visible signs of disgust. It was extremely unprofessional. After several examples of this I went to my husband who was waiting in line and told him to give a nice tip. These guys worked hard all day and have quite a laborious job. Despite this older guys rotten attitude I felt that it needed to be overlooked. My husband handed over the bag, we had 8 fish, my husband gave him 30$. He counted it stuffed it in his pocket and yelled "next". He's miserable. A thank you would have gone a long way. Finally, we were told that we could have our coolers iced when they were done. We watched several people get ice dumped into theirs. We waited til they were done and when we asked the older gentleman ~ mr. Crab~ told us we could buy it when we got off the boat. At this point I became irritated. We're in the hole 288$ +. yes we enjoyed a day together, yes we got fish, yes there are miserable people in the world but not giving us ice when other people got it was a d:&"! Move. The captain was down at one point talking with my son, the guy seemed great, the deckhands were young men who worked hard all day long. They were all pleasant and extremely helpful. That one guy doesn't belong working with the public. He is the reason I would not return. Sorry to pinpoint a person for the reason but it is what it is. I usually have fun in all that I do, and I did, and I can overlook a lot but he definitely cast a crap shadow on our day that I couldn't get past. read more

I was very excited to go out with yankee fleet for an all day fishing trip. They are very popular and well known on Cape Ann and have a big operation. They are clearly doing well as they just added a new boat to their fleet. As a local, I had high hopes for this operation. However, i was disappointed with our trip yesterday (7/15/18). I did give two stars because my fiance and I did come back with 9 haddock and we were happy with that. However, they try to nickel and dime you for everything and the crew is extremely rude. I had to pay $3 for a sinker that a crew member lost during a tangle and that's ridiculous. It's only $3 but it was not my fault. The older mate (George i believe) didn't care and just wanted his $3 that he pocketed for himself. He was also rude any time we interacted with him for literally anything and did not actually speak to anyone. He just mumbled and grumbled under his breath the whole time. At the end of the trip I wrapped my sinker around the post like we had been doing the whole trip because no one had told us to do otherwise. Instead of telling us how to fix it, George just mumbled "sinkers around the handle, kids can't do anything right these days." For someone who's working for tips, you'd think he'd be a bit more pleasant. I also saw some questionable practices including gaffing cod (protected and cannot be kept) by the gills which gave the fish zero chance of survival as we watched them die on the surface as bycatch after they were tossed back. There was also a dogfish that was caught and brought on board. They got their hook and sinker back but didn't bother to untangle the fish from the line before tossing it back. It was completely wrapped with line and bloody when it was tossed back. Also, while fileting the catch at the end, the crew was throwing the burlap sacks overboard. While I know they are biodegradable, that doesn't mean you can toss them overboard into the ocean. Just take them back to the dock and throw them away or compost them somewhere. Because the fisheries in New England are fragile and closely protected I thought that a recreational fishing business would be more environmentally friendly but some of their practices are just gross and irresponsible. Overall, the operation left a terrible taste in my mouth and they should be embarrassed and ashamed of their crew and how they handle things. They need to remember that they aren't a commercial fishing vessel in Gloucester. They need to calm down and not be so rude and gruff with the customers they are expecting a tip from. I've worked on boats before. I've worked for tips and I would never treat customers the way they did. I also know how important tips are and I did not tip them. They did nothing to earn it. I didn't even have them filet my fish after seeing how much good meat they were wasting. In the future, I will check out other charter companies. I have heard much better things about Gloucester fleet. I live on Cape Ann and will not recommend Yankee Fleet to anyone and will discourage people from fishing with them. read more

We scheduled a half day fishing trip yesterday (Sunday). We received a call on Saturday confirming we needed to be at their location at 7:30am sharp. We arrived on time and waited around until 7:45knowing the boat was supposed to begin boarding at 8am. We tried calling the company numerous times with no answer; finally a recording stated that the half day trips were cancelled but the full day trips were still on schedule. We NEVER received a call stating the trip was cancelled. Certainly trips can get cancelled the same day due to weather, however, the weather was not terrible and we're mostly upset we didn't receive any sort of communication from the company, were were literally left hanging in the parking lot wondering what was going on. We will be going deep sea fishing in the future but it will certainly not be with this company. read more

No Service Provided - A Greedy Company Without Business Ethic I had a very disturbing experience over the Memorial Day Weekend as I tried to go on a reserved All-Day Deep Sea Fishing trip. The trip was booked as a birthday experience for an avid fisherman who has never experience deep sea fishing. We stopped by Cap Ann's Coffee (2 minutes away from the fishing boat place) to purchase a gluten-free sandwich to go on the trip with us. From our previous email exchange with the fishing company, it was told we needed to bring our own gluten-free food as the boat trip does not have this option. Our avid fisherman has celiac disease. As we waited for the sandwich at Cape Ann Coffee, I received a phone call (6:51am) from Yankee Fleet (the fishing company) to ask if we were coming on the trip. I assured the person over the phone we will be there shortly as we are just waiting for the sandwich. I also explained the celiac disease's need with gluten free food again as previously discussed through emails. At 6:56am, I received another call from Yankee Fleet again, the same person over the phone told me this time, "The boat is leaving without you, we already have a full boat." We arrived at the Yankee Fleet check-in at 7:01am, and the older lady (also the one over the phone) said to me, "The boat left, we don't wait for you. You are late (by 1 minute). You were suppose to be here 1/2 hour early." Then there was another young lady at the counter, who began to mouth off about policy. At that time, I realized there was nothing more I can say or do, so I indicated to both of them I would like to speak to a manager or the owner of the organization. As I waited for the contact information, the young lady behind the counter continued to mouth off, and as much as I tries to tell her I was done speaking with her about the whole ordeal, she continued on. At one point, the young lady said to me, "What?" in a very confrontational way, and then "Bye" in a very dismissive and rude mannerism as I was still waiting for the other person to give me the contact information. After 3 emails and a phone call later over the course of 5 business days on my part, the manager of Yankee Fleet finally got back to me and indicated they won't provide a refund of $136.00. read more

I then stopped trying and called them on all 3 numbers available. According to Joanne in the office who I spoke with after a week of waiting, there is someone there all day every day even though they are closed for the season(winter). Very irresponsible Captain on "Yankee Freedom." Ignores rules of navigation. Poses dangers to public safety. Came blasting into Gloucester harbor at 12:30pm on 7/16/16 at full throttle -- completely disregarding No Wake Zone and a USCG Local Notice to Mariners of the Blackburn Challenge rowing race around Cape Ann -- throwing up a huge wake and nearly capsizing small boats. Harbormaster rebuked him over VHF. At first Yankee Freedom refused to respond. Eventually he did. YF: "What do you want me to do, slow down?" HM: "Yes! Under Article 6 of the Navigation Rules [Safe Speed], You are responsible for your wake. You took the exam. You should know better." YF: "Oh." Vessel also belches such thick black exhaust that many thought it had a fire on board. read more

DON'T WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY!! I have been fishing with my son since he was 6. He is 17 and this was to be our last outing before college. We usually have fished off cape cod waters but decided to try a full day trip with Yankee. So the reviews you read about tangled lines and 1/2 hour plus waiting for a rude crew to assist you are accurate. They dollar you to death... that is true. Seemed to only care about their regulars - that also IS true. Made my son and friend have the Worst experience ever... unfortunately very true. My wife wanted a picture of my son holding his fish - never happened! Crew had to reel up catch and were impatient, curt and condescending! Thought this was going to be a day we would always remember. But thanks to the people captain and crew at Yankee we are just trying to forget! Be smarter than I was.... STAY AWAY! I never review businesses and seeing some of the negative feedback it is completely not true. My son and I went on an all day fishing trip on 8/28 limited capacity Tuesday and it was great. The mates, Matt and George were awesome and the Captain took great pains to find us the best spots. This was my son's first deep sea trip and he loved it. Everyone we had contact with from the front office to the crew were great. Needless to say, it will become a regular event for us. read more

The biggest thumbs down I can possibly give. I can't speak to the actual service or the vessels, but I can speak to their customer service -- which speaks VOLUMES. I'm highly unimpressed. My husband wanted to surprise me for my birthday and set up a trip for Saturday am. I am a cancer survivor and still experience some complications from time to time and ended up in the ER Friday night-saturday afternoon. We called to ask them to reschedule our trip due to the nature of the circumstances. When we called, the woman on the phone was incompetent, could not give me the correct email (5x) for the manager and it took over 13 hours for them to respond. Then, the response was just apoplectic. After acknowledging that we understand refunds are not permitted, although we were informed had we called to make reservations they could've changed them, not if they're made online....(dumb), we simply said we were flexible and understand if we had to wait a couple weeks until they had some availability. This manager, told me, with absolutely zero empathy for the situation, that "Unfortunately, our cancellation policy is very strict. Online reservations are always non-refundable and we do not usually let people reschedule. This boat ended up being full and we did have to turn people away. We were unable to even resell your tickets because we weren't aware you were not coming until minutes before the trip . I'm sorry but there is nothing I can do as far as rescheduling these tickets." These are her EXACT words. My husband was running around the ER trying to be polite enough to even call and let them know we wouldn't make it, as if that was the first thing on his mind.... I'm so so unimpressed. Luckily we had a great time the next day with a different company and would absolutely NEVER book with these people, EVER! read more

What a great outfit. The Captains work hard to put you on the fish. The crews are excellent. These are my favorite boats to go out on, I go out around forty times a year, 12-15 of those on the Yankee Fleet. I have caught 20 plus pound pollock, loads of haddock and some big cod. I have also gone out on the Freedom overnight trip, I had great fishing topped off with a 56lb halibut. My favorite trip is the 12 hour Marathon on the Clipper. Captain Rob is the best Captain I have ever been out with. The crew members, Aaron, George, Dave, and Joe, are hands down the hardest working and most attentive mates I have ever encountered, and Stacy in the galley does a fantastic job. I have chartered the Clipper earlier this year, and have another charter in October with my fishing club. My club members and I can't wait to go out with them again. When your looking to fish in Gloucester, make sure to go out with these folks. read more

over booked the trip i went on, had absolutely no room to even breathe. as far as i am concerned i spent good money for a boat ride. we spent a total of less than an hour with our lines in the water and constantly moving. asked the crew for help and was replied to with sarcastic tones.... the equipment was very old and worn out... line was knotted together from what looked like several previous lines.. Very disappointed and can not in good faith recommend this to anyone. read more
