YAF is not on my list ever to go back to. I highly recommend avoiding this museum. Not worth it. I flew in specifically to see their collection, only to discover they don't let visitors view their hangar and airworthy aircraft. When I protested, they asked if I were someone special. I said yes, I flew in. No dice. I paid more than I should have to see a small static aircraft museum that took 30 mins to walk through. Even ground control indicated the hangar was off limits! I'VE NEVER BEEN TO AN AVIATION MUSEUM WHERE I'M NOT PERMITTED TO SEE THEIR COLLECTION!! Small, but MIGHTY, and so much amazing history!! This gem is bound to appeal to airplane history junkies, but even those who are not massive "air-heads" are bound to find quite a bit to keep their interest here. Some very interesting local connections, with displays from WWII, Korea, and Vietnam Wars. You'll also find flight simulators, a play area for kids, and a great gift shop, along with lots of special events and opportunities to purchase flights in some vintage planes. The Mr.'s reasonably priced annual membership he purchased (in advance) gave us free entry to the museum (and others in the area/around the country), discounts at the gift shop, and greatly reduced tickets to the Thunder over Michigan Air Show. Yankee air museum is a small museum with a few planes and exhibits related to the air force and various branches of the military. Its a nifty little place good for a 2 hour visit, less if you have small kids. My 3 year old and 2 year old enjoyed looking at the big planes. There is a small kids exploration area with a real cockpit and a small plane the kids can get in. There are alot of guides stationed around the museum who a very knowledgeable and friendly. They all seemed to be retirees who really enjoy being there. I will say there is no ac so it was very hot. They have big industrial fans blowing but we went on one of the hottest days of the year. So, the date and I were looking for an afternoon date that was local to the area, and this place randomly popped in my head. I've known about it for years, but never bothered to come here. Why? I don't know, but I finally made it in. Pulling up, it's a pretty cool setup with planes outside the museum to admire. There's stuff from all different years and it was quite interesting. The gift shop is where you enter through, and purchase your tickets, which are reasonably priced. You can do a guided tour with on of the volunteers if you want, but we passed since we wanted to go at our own pace. They have some pretty cool stuff here from uniforms, planes, a few helicopters and parts from different wars dating back to WWI and Vietnam. Each display usually comes with a history and background of what it is. Overall, we enjoyed our time here, but the museum is rather small. We did it in like 45 minutes, maybe less. Staff is friendly and educated and answered all our questions. I enjoyed my time here, but was hoping for more. read more

I went to the Yankee Air Museum years ago, a year or two before the fire at the other location. It's taking them awhile to recover but they are moving ahead, and this location is worth a visit in the meantime, before they move in the next couple of years into part of the Willow Run B-24 plant. I'd call it small to mid-size, worth an hour or so visit. There are restored and semi-restored planes inside, including an F-4, an F-100 painted in Thunderbirds colors, and an F-84 that will be in similar colors shortly. There's a section of B-24 fuselage with a Rosie the Riveter display, some smaller military and civilian planes, and lots of artifacts. Outside you'll find a few planes right near the museum, and a B-52 and some corporate jets close to the runway, about 1/4 mile away. All will be inside at the new location, as will the odd white building across the way from the museum that looks out of place on an airport (it was a training building in WW2, and is now storage and meeting space.) The staff were all friendly and generally very knowledgeable. There's a gift shop with lots of books, toys, and clothes, etc. The museum makes for a nice introduction to aviation for kids, and an interesting visit for adults. read more

The coolest thing about this museum is the fact that they offer rides in a couple vintage WW2 bombers - a B-25 Mitchell and a B-17 Flying Fortress. Rides will set you back about $400 for a 45 minute experience, with 30 minutes being air time. Talk about a once in a lifetime experience! Maybe when I have the discretionary income or if you are reading this and want to give me the best birthday present ever..... The museum itself, is sadly not much to see. Apparently they had a fire a few years back and lost a major part of their collection of artifacts. They are still recovering from the fire but there is still a fair amount to see so it may be worth stopping in if you are in the area. The people running the museum are passionate about their work there and will be happy to answer any questions you might have. I admire their enthusiasm and drive. read more

Stopped by here for a quick visit while in Detroit on a business trip. This is the first time I've been able to return since their hangar fire in 2004, but they've absolutely outdone themselves rebuilding with an incredible museum and a wide array of aircraft. Incredibly friendly, inviting and knowledgeable staff were able to help me get the absolute most on my brief stop. Would highly recommend anyone in the area check it out or fly in one of their WW2 aircraft (was fortunate enough to fly in their B-17 recently as well). read more

Very nice smaller air museum. Not very large but just about right for an hour or two of browsing. You don't feel pressured to rush through so you don't miss anything. Some well preserved flying machines, aviation accoutrements, a very well done exhibit of a plane retrieved from Lake Michigan and info about Willow Run and the B-24s made here -- one every hour -- in WWII. Was a little disappointed that with the famous Willow Run plant producing 8600 B24 bombers in WWII that little was offered. Had a great time at the yankee air museum last weekend. Actually got to ride in a huey. The staff was amazing but the crew chief that rode in the back with us.... oh that man MADE the whole ride!!! He was amazing I was terrified but he kept me calm and explained every movement they made. He was trying his best to keep my eyes opened lolol didnt work out so well... but he was the GOAT!!!! It was amazing to talk to some of the veterans there, hearing how long they served and what they experienced. Definitely going back to ride the greyhound huey again, also going back for my new bestie the crew chief. read more

The Yankee Air Museum is the closest air museum to where I live. It isn't very big, but it houses some great artifacts. The museum is located on property where Ford built B-24 Liberator bombers during World War II. It is also well known for the Rosie the Riveter workers who helped to build those great bombers. The docents who work in the museum are knowledgeable and enthusiastic. I can't wait until they move into their new home. read more

What a wonderful place to bring the kids to learn and explore!!! The Yankee air museum has a rich history and I am really excited that they've recently obtained more space in the old willow run plant. My boys LOVED all the airplanes. We explored for hours and the tour guides offer so much insight and information on each display. You can tell they have a real love for the history of these planes. There are several displays that allow the kids to have a hands on experience and I would recommend the museum to anyone who homeschools. It is inexpensive and educational for everyone. read more

We recently became members of the Yankee Air Museum and were invited to a new member orientation and behind the scenes tour. We saw the displays open to the public as well as some of the staff only areas where they sort, catalog, restore, and store donated items from uniforms to letters to photographs to military artifacts etc. There is a lot of work being done by volunteers to help the museum continue to improve. You can actually purchase a unique experience of a flight on the Yankee Air Museum's B-17, B-25, or C-47. We had a great time and are looking forward to the annual Thunder Over Michigan Air Show that they sponsor later this year. There are many other programs including speakers by veterans, authors, topic experts, etc. There are also volunteer opportunities if you want to get up close and personal with old aircraft or help with processing materials that they have received. read more

There are a lot of planes helicopters simulations and different memorabilia from military throughout the years. READ THIS BEFORE BOOKING B17 RIDE This is not an "experience" as they quote on the website. It is strictly a 25 minute ride in a B17 airplane. My family was not allowed to accompany me around the plane to take pictures and they didn't offer any professional pictures to document my ride or for memento of the ride. The ride was a gift and an expensive one. It was explained in a email before my trip that my family would be able to take photos of the plane and me prior to takeoff. That never was allowed and no one explained that until after we were all ready to go out to the plane. The workers there are volunteers and put little effort into any customer experience. They don't care about you or your experience or the fact that you paid a lot of money for the ride. They are not rude not at all friendly. It reminds me of paying for a fancy meal only to find out you are being served a cheap slider burger. The volunteers are EXTREMELY disorganized. They told us no one could be at the plane that didn't have a ticketed and 20 minutes later they were allowing security escorted family members to go with ticket purchasers for another plane. When approached about this the man simply stated "well they aren't supposed to" and offered nothing to anyone else. In my case the person in charge of flights, Dave W., wanted us to purchase $25 air show tickets for an air show that the gates didn't open until 5:30pm even though my flight on the B17 was over at 4:45. When confronted about this he only would say "I don't make the rules" and offered no other explanation or any other individual to help resolve this. It took us calling the executive director (thanks Dave for leaving his cell number shown in emails) to try and fix this. As it turns out other people who had family there were never asked to pay or purchase air show tickets. Unless you really want an expensive plane ride, and only a plane ride, save your money, time, and frustration. Update I reached out to the person in charge and was told he was going to ask about what happened and then get back to me. He had my email and phone number and as of now, 6 months later, I never heard back from him. Save yourself the time and frustration if you are looking into air rides. I can't say what the museum is like since we didn't do there but if the staff experience I had is any indication on how things are run I would spend my money elsewhere. read more

I remember the old YAM before the fire, and it was bigger and had a lot more stuff. On the positive side for the new incarnation, the exhibits are updated with lots of big, bright graphics. I really like that they dedicated a lot of space in the new museum to the "Rosie the Riveter" story as well. I went to the dedication of the new NASA exhibit at the museum, and that promises to be a great addition. For a $5 entry fee (with discounted packages for families), it's well worth it, and they do offer free entry several times a year on special occasions. This is a great destination for families with kids and anyone interested in aircraft or southeast Michigan history. read more

I guess I was thinking of the Smithsonian when I first walked in here 3 years ago. Being an avid WW2 aircraft's fan, maybe I was expecting more. A few static displays of aircraft's gone by, a few rotary engines of these aircraft's of yesteryear, a makeshift flight simulator for the kids at $5 a run, using Microsoft Flight Sim X as the software no less, all nicely parked in a hangar turned museum. There are some aircraft here that are complete restorations. Probably can fly too, if one puts some AVGas in, but mostly static displays. The Grumman F4F Phantom of the Korea/Vietnam days does take up most of the room. Overall nice place to visit for the kids and the larger kids as well. The place is operated by men and women who have retired from their present jobs, and who have a keen interest in the aircraft's of days gone by. The store serves as museum and other military aircraft and aviation memorabilia, from jackets, pins, hats, mugs, ties etc that one can spend money to acquire. The yearly T.O.M (Thunder Over Michigan) airshow stuff is also here. While supplies last. All however are military oriented. Civilian aviation is not part of the deal. Then again, the Yankee Air Museum is situated in the grounds of Willow Run Airport aka KYIP, a place where also in the days gone by, during WW2 The B17G Flying Fortress Bomber was manufactured. read more

Although the current museum is very small since a fire destroyed the original one a few years back, I had a great time exploring the aircraft and military memorabilia they still have on hand. I even got to take a free ride in their flight simulator! The museum seems to be run by an all-volunteer team and everyone was enthusiastic about showing us the exhibits. The volunteers I encountered while I was there, really made my visit awesome, these people are passionate about educating visitors on military aviation history. There are plans, funds, and space to re-build the museum, I would definitely want to check that out once it's up. However, for $5, the current one is worth checking out. read more

Totally pointless to visit in the winter, as a majority of the aircraft will be inaccessible. Sure, they've got 4 inside the museum and 4 outside of the museum, but all of others are down near the flightline. The problem with this is that the only way to get to it is a side road, which had clearly never been plowed since it started snowing, making the road unpassable for most cars, because you could see where the road started, but from there, you guess would be as good as anyone's as to how to actually get there. Aside from the side road issues, you wouldn't be able to get up close to the planes, because the man who was manning the cash register when you walk in said that all of the planes out there are locked up behind the fence. If you think you'll be able to see their headliner aircraft, the B-17 and the B-25, good luck! As those are kept in private hangars away from the public, and are "only available to VIPs." according to the man at the front desk. read more

I had the good fortune to capture one of the twelve seats on the YAM's C-47 for the 2018 EAA airshow in Oshkosh. The aircraft was clean, sound, and well maintained, even had a new paint job. Our pilots were seasoned veterans with thousands of hours of military and civilian experience both were friendly and generous with their time. Howard and Randy along with Ashley, the membership manager, went out of their way to make sure that luggage, transport and accommodations were attended to. I think the experience brought out the best in every one as I found my fellow travelers to be great company, Woohoo indeed!! read more
