The steak was cooked perfectly medium and the flavor was fantastic. Definitely a high recommendation to get this again. Make sure to come early as this place often gets busy and is hard to get a table. Yamato is always one of my favorite places to eat when in Pella, never have had a bad experience in 2 years of eating here usually a couple times a month! The waiters and waitresses are always so kind and go above and beyond to make sure all of your needs are met! The food is always great, dining in and to go. The Ambiance is one of my favorites in a restaurant, not too bright but not too dark either, its a beautiful aesthetic with some nice art as well. read more

Ordered roughly $80+ worth of sushi. It's now "ground" paste. These I've gotten in the past. They both are supposed to be "spicy salmon". The texture is way different. Has something changed? They were kind picking it up. But I had to wait ten minutes longer than the time I requested in the online pickup. read more

My first impression and experience was great!! Small Japanese restaurant on the edge of Pella. I think Yamato is a great Japanese restaurant for the community. I had the Dinosaur Roll and a side of Miso soup. This roll had Soft shell crab, tempura, topped with eel, avocado & eel sauce. Came out delicious, crunchy, hot & fresh. The miso soup was awesome. It had a really great flavor! Not like other restaurants where they make theirs bland. My friend had a couple California rolls and soup as well. Both came to $34.xx after gratuity. Service was efficient and nice. Nothing spectacular but they served well and without interruption. Visited during Thursday night dinner hour. Environment was packed and busy. There were a couple families waiting for tables while we visited. It shows that the locals definitely love this restaurant and keep them busy. The restaurant was minimal in decor and had maybe 10 tables that seat 4 people each. Noticed many to go orders being picked up. Overall all I recommend Yamato! My friend who lives locally loves this restaurant and visits often. read more

Food was good. We did a few different rolls and the kids did fried rice and udon noodles. Everyone seemed to like what they got. Service was very quick and friendly and the restaurant was nice and clean, kind of your standard set up for any Asian restaurant. If we are in the area again we will probably stop again. read more

To find the best places to eat, regardless of what race the owner is. I don't care what race the owner is. I only care if the food is good. If you're plaid and you serve good food, I'll visit. If you're plaid and your food sucks, I won't. I reward good food, regardless of race. 2. I like to write and Yelp gives me a platform to do just that even though their 5,000 character limit is bullshit. Yelp kept asking me to review Yamato. I blew it off every time because I had no clue what Yamato was, till I finally looked it up. "Well I'll be a son of a bitch. I did eat there" and Yelp knows this because I checked in using the app. This, one would think, would not be a good sign for Yamato. Yamato is a sushi restaurant in Pella, Ia, hidden in a strip mall adjacent to WalMart. If you're not looking for it, you're not gonna see it. Fortunately for them, you're going to seek it out because other than the surprise onion bit, with teeth, in the bowl of soup, it was surprisingly good. The Lobster Rangoon was wonderful as were the spring rolls. I wasn't aware that I got soup with my order but it came out with the appetizers. Im not even sure what kind it was, maybe Miso. At first I thought the white floater was possibly a baby shrimp, fetus sized. It looked like it was once alive and had been sacrificed for my enjoyment. Fishing it out and placing it on the table I asked the waiter "What is this" He replied "Its Onion" and it did it without hesitation which put me at ease. Had he had to think about it, even if for a moment, it would not have gone well. I finished the soup regardless because it was delicious. The Green Dragon Roll and Volcano Roll were very good. One had a delayed spicy reaction which was addicting and I can't remember which it was which just means that ill have to order both again the next time I go. The staff was exceptionally nice. They did wear mask which doesn't really matter to me but Im sure that it will bring comfort to many people during these days of tribulation. Sorry Yamato that I forgot about you. I ordered take out & it was prepared on time. The restaurant was a bit dirty. The soup & salad might have been the saddest I've seen. One mushroom in the soup and a small smattering of curled, thin carrots on the salad. The salmon was a good size portion & prepared how I requested. The rice was a little chewy. 5 pieces of broccoli, no mushrooms as it said on the menu there would be. I would likely not return. read more

Went for lunch and ordered the 2 roll special, spicy salmon and spicy tuna. I asked the waitress for specifics but she couldn't provide any. I had eaten lots of sushi in lots of restaurants so it seemed safe. What I was served were 2 small rolls, one with a dark pink mush inside and the other with a more brownish pink. There was sauce on top. Both dishes looked like they had cat food inside. I asked the waitress about the dishes and why they didn't have other things in them and pieces of fish. New to town, we weren't sure what to expect but were hopeful based on reviews. Gotta say, the sushi was excellent. Also, from the peppery soup to the hibachi and fried rice, everything was delicious and well seasoned. We had a bog group so we got the tempura platter and shumai and they were perfect. The little plain storefront location was packed with couples, families, and happy friends out together. The service was attentive and efficient. Great customer service, I was greeted as soon as I walked in and they are doing covid safety. They made ordering easy, I was able to ask questions and get more information about items on the menu. This little restaurant tucked in a strip mall next to Walmart is easy to overlook, but if your are serious about excellent Asian cuisine then it is a must stop!!! The quality here is always amazing, from sushi to, lobster, chicken fried rice, or ragoons - Yamato will not disappoint you in any way. I highly recommend. Lived in Pella for four years and this is the best restaurant in town. Not just good sushi for a small town, but out does many sushi place in the DSM metro. Great sushi while in town for a few days. We had Crab rangoons that were soft and crispy somehow, yum. Crunchy rolls, seaweed salad, asparagus salad, crispy crab, spicy California, spicy shrimp, volcano roll and lobster roll. Food was ok. The salad that was included in the lunch menu was made with iceberg lettuce. I expected something more authentic like seaweed salad. The Hibachi bowl hardly had any vegetables. If you eat plant based, you won't be full. Food was not delivered to us at the same time either. read more

I ate here with a friend after work and had the salmon teriyaki bento box. It was the right proportion and the fish was pan fried just right. There was a nice salad on the side along with some miso soup and sushi rolls. Overall, I can't complain and the price was right too. The atmosphere is nice and the service was great. I just wished that this place was open on Mondays. Well, I am glad that I stayed a couple more days so that we could try this place across from Walmart. read more

We frequent sushi and hibachi restaurants in Des Moines but opted to give this place a try as it is closer to home. AMAZING! Our waiter was perfect - quick, kept glasses full, very polite and didn't hover. The food came out very quickly and our orders were exactly as we requested. At this point we were crossing our fingers the food would be delicious since the service was exceptional. It did not disappoint!
