The $5 beer happy hour got me in, whether it was still happy hour or not I didn't care I just thought it was a nice touch. And the pictures on the menu were better. As I waited for my dinner buddy I checked out what other people were eating. The couple next to me had some kind of soup that they were sharing, which looked interesting. Then they had big chunks of grilled fish. So we ended up ordering the pork belly broth which was super tasty and has finely sliced pork belly that melted in your mouth. Also ordered the fish, which was grilled in miso. Also had a mini okonomiyaki which I have not eaten since being in Japan, and was yum. (Although I don't like the fish shavings that look like wood shavings and move by themselves). For dessert was ice cream, with us trying the green tea icecream and black seasame flavours. It was served in a glass with crunchy nut cornflakes on the bottom and a kind of syrup over the top. The cornflakes were an awesome addition! Price came to $61 for two beers, three dishes and two desserts. Next time I want to try the sushi, as well as the big range of yakitori (something on a stick).

There was 6-7 people cooking on Friday night, one people at each station. Thus the food come out very quickly! We learn the hard lesson by making a mistake of ordering everting at once. Sure enough all the 8 dishes were delivered within 20 minutes.... make sure to place your order one to two dishes at a time. Food was good. Yakitori juicy, Hotate was fresh, seaweed salad, grilled mackerel, all dishes we ordered were pretty good. Old fashioned fries are a good deal (for Aussie price). Plenty of sake choices. You can choose from 100ml or 300ml so you can taste a little first, to see which one you like. I'll come back here again.

The ipad ordering system is well designed with detailed descriptions and wonderful photos. I did have a higher expectation with the food after reading all these 4/5 star reviews but nothing we ordered was really memorable. Maybe I did not order the right things? Good as a place to meet up with friends and have a drink but if you are looking for higher quality of Japanese fare, you might need to go somewhere. Just be careful the portion is tapas style and your bills can quickly added up if you want to have a full meal here.

We opted for the "deluxe feed me" which is a chefs tasting menu. Everything we had was good but the standouts for me were kingfish sashimi (so, so, so delicious) and watermelon sashimi. The latter was crazy - it's marinated watermelon and honestly you could believe you were eating tuna. Great for vegans. We left stuffed and happy. Two thumbs up.

You can opt for choosing the chef's set which is a predetermined menu, or order a la carte to create your own spread. We selected six items that appealed most to us which was the perfect amount for everyone in our group of four to get a taste of it all. + CORN RIBS (A$20): This fully vegetarian item was surprisingly my favorite of the evening. Ears of corn were cut vertically through the cob, creating spears that you could eat like ribs to bite off the kernels. The "ribs" were coated in caramelized miso butter and rolled in furikake. The corn was naturally sweet while the butter added a savory umami punch. This is my new favorite way to eat corn! + CHICKEN KARAAGE (A$20): Lightly battered pieces of chicken were meaty, tender and piping hot. The exterior was delightfully crispy and a sweet gochujang dipping sauce gave it a bit of heat and extra flavor. + WAGYU MB9 SKEWERS (A$28): Each skewer had four cubes of beef grilled and glazed in a sweet teriyaki sauce. The meat had a good char to it, but a few pieces were a bit chewy and fibrous, making them a little tough to bite. While I enjoyed the flavor, I was expecting the beef to be more tender, so I was a little disappointed with the quality. + EGGPLANT DENGAKU (A$26): Half an eggplant came with a sweet soy-based sauce and topped with sour cream, wild rice furikake and almonds. I personally didn't like the sour cream on top since it was quite heavy and overwhelming after we spread it across the eggplant. The texture was creamy and mushy, except for the sprinkles of crunch from the toppings. I normally love eggplant, but didn't care for this dish as a whole. + SCALLOPS (A$22): A grilled scallop was placed on a small disk of potato mochi, and two pieces came in one order. The scallop itself was smooth and tender but it did have a bit of fishiness to it. Other than that, this didn't have much flavor, so I personally would skip it. + GRILLED MOCHI (A$12): A creative plate of grilled mochi squares topped with crumbles of chicken skin furikake and a dusting of curry spice. The mochi had a nice chew to it and the salty chicken skin excited my palette while the curry added some warmth. I've never had anything like this before so it was quite unique. Overall, I enjoyed my meal here and it was fun to try so many diverse dishes. Just be aware that some of their small plates come with just two servings (in our case, the skewers, mochi and scallops), so you may need to multiply your order to accommodate your table. I appreciated the friendly and quick service. We were seated immediately at 6:00P on a Wednesday and with this restaurant being located in the CBD, it got busier as people ended their workday. The staff was friendly, greeted us promptly and was attentive to our empty dishes and filling our waters. While I didn't love everything we ordered, I recommend trying Kid Kyoto since the environment is perfect for a night out to unwind after work, or with friends on the weekend. If you're up for shareable plates perhaps with a drink, this is the place for you.

If you choose to eat inside, the reduced lighting gives it style and personal feeling. While never too busy it also has enough customers to indicate it is worth visiting. The noise levels are quiet enough to easily have a conversation without trying to shout over other people. There should never be any need to book in advance. The staff are very friendly and accommodating but it is important to realise that for most of the waitresses, English is not their native language. You should keep your order simple and clear to prevent mistakes. The food can simply be summed up as excellent. They have always been very quick in bringing out soups and starters so it is worthwhile ordering those. You can expect some variation in how long it takes to get your main meal depending on how busy they are as well as how long it takes to prepare the food. Their miso soup is decent and they have a fantastic karage. Their sushi, sashami and bento boxes are of very high quality and they take a lot of extra effort in making sure it is presented beautifully. I am a big fan of their chicken teriyaki bento box as it has variety as well as tasting great. They are fully licensed and even have Japanese beers on tap. I can't comment too much on the alcohol situation as I generally don't drink alcohol at Japanese restaurants but the other people I go with say it is acceptable. The price they charge for all of this is incredible. You will be surprised when you see how low the bill is. I would consider this place exceptional value and doubt there are many other places in the Chatswood area that have food and service this good with such low prices. I would consider Izakaya Arigato a hidden gem. Absolutely worth checking out if you are in the area and have a craving for a decent Japanese meal.

I tell Melle that the last time I came here that the sushi and sashimi were so tasty and fresh. She nods but it's not until she starts eating the salmon nigiri and sashimi that her eyes light up and says ohhh wow this is really fresh and tasty. Yuri then explains which tuna is which. There are three grades of tuna available on the menu tonight. Melle prefers the medium grade and we all enjoy the usual tuna grade sashimi and nigiri which is typically served in restaurants. The usual tuna grade is a deep purple. Yuri explains that the lighter the tuna, the higher the grade. The highest grade is fatty and delicate. I love it!
