The first thing I love about YVH: They understand shipping, and they clearly explain it! As an Alaska homebrewer it feels like we spend more time online, putting products into a shopping cart, going all the way through the checkout process only to find one of the following: 1) Shipping is $38 to Alaska for 4oz of hops 2) Alaska is not part of the United States. (nothing like seeing "FREE SHIPPING TO THE UNITED STATES" with no asterisk or disclaimer...only to find there is shipping...and it is high. Very high. Higher than Alaska is north.) 3) There is no "AK" option from the "state" drop-down menu. Which means: 4) They don't ship to Alaska, at all. The next thing I love: great prices! Some of the cheapest on the internet. The next: amazing selection. If I try really, REALLY hard a can find a hop or two YVH doesn't carry...but I don't have to try hard at all at most homebrew shops. I love buying experimental varieties and...well...experimenting! (thanks to YVH, I was brewing with Talus before it was cool/called Talus) Next: the customer service. I rarely have issues, but when I do, a real-life human helps me out and provides thoughtful feedback. Some real-life humans give you customer service in a robotic way, not here. If you like hops, this store will blow you away. They have the latest and most sought after hops on this plant. Galaxy in stock? No problem. Experimental hops? They have it. The staff is friendly and the prices are fair considering some of the lupulin is unobtainium. I have not shopped on their website, but definitely check it out to see inventory. read more

Drove an hour n half to buy wine making supplies.. The building entrance is confusing.. Walked thru a maze, just to find people on cell phones.. Pointing me to a different direction. When i found the dim lit show room??? And a young gentleman finally acknowledged me, he was not knowledgeable at all.. Offered little help.. Just said "we are more into hops".. So.. If you are a home brewer.. Beer or wine.. Dont bother this place for help or their limited supply.. You are better off going to Ace??? A hardware store? They have a pretty good supply of ingredients and equipment. But almost none of the items have any visible indications of price. I didn't speak with the people there, I don't really need much advice at this point, I just stopped in on a rainy day to see what they had. I'll say to their credit, they let me look around as long as I wanted without bothering me, which I appreciated. But again, the lack of any price tags was a very definite red flag for me. I don't want to have to ask what everything costs, and I don't want to intend to buy a bunch of stuff, only to find that it's too expensive. I am cost conscious to a degree when it comes to brewing beer. If you're not, then no worries, I'd probably recommend it. It is in an old fruit warehouse in the middle of "fruit row", so if ambiance in a brew supply shop is important to you, It's immaterial to me, add another star or two. For me, three stars due to no visible price tags, is the best I can do for now. I strongly suspect, but don't know for sure, that it's pretty expensive. There just are too many on-line brew supply shops with very competitive prices to justify paying a hefty premium for ambiance or the fact of their being local. I may be mistaken though. read more
