We're Singaporean-Chinese and when my dad suggested this place (because it's the New Year and many of the other eateries were full or closed) I was incredibly skeptical. However, I ended up being very pleasantly surprised! Granted, we spoke to them in mandarin and my mom asked the chef (who is from Zhejiang) to make dishes the way they ate them rather than catered for foreigners. All the dishes were very reasonably priced.
The fish, duck, and fried rice were the best dishes.
Hot and sour soup - 3 stars
Too sour for me but good consistency.
Sweet and sour fish - 4.5 stars
Not too sweet or artificial tasting. Very well flavored and the fish was cooked perfectly - it wasn't too dry.
Hot plate beef - 3.5 stars
I personally didn't like the beef, which tasted like it had tenderizer/sodium bicarbonate added, but for my parents they'd grown up with it and enjoyed it.
Duck with mushrooms and bamboo - 5 stars
I don't like duck but this was excellent!
Stir fried cabbage - 3 stars
Salty but it was fine with the rice.
Fried rice - 4 stars
Yang zhou fried rice style - I.e. with egg in it. Not too oily!
Fried noodles with prawn - 3.5 stars
Good, tasted like the vegetarian bee hoon you get in hawker centers in Singapore. read more
