I tried golf as a teenager, and couldn't get the hand-eye coordination down. Don't kid yourselves, I still can't. I was designed to sit in front of an Excel spreadsheet, not stand in front of a golf tee. Stone Meadow Golf has completely turned everything on its head. Don't get me wrong, my hand eye coordination is still as real as the Loch Ness Monster, however the lack thereof is no longer as scary. Stone Meadow has a driving range and a 9-hole course. Both are priced very reasonably, and (at least for the 9-hole), equipment like a wedge, putter, and two balls. The course was very approachable and non-intimidating for a newbie like myself. The staff were also helpful and friendly. So, while I don't see myself becoming a person who holds for fun on his own, including owning one's own clubs, when my friends have an open invite for Stone Meadow, I will absolutely join them if I'm in town).

They had carts, and hills, and traps you could work from, and putting greens. They also had this wonderful driving range, grass or turf, that had pins out yonder, so you could actually shoot for goal. Made the experience very good and rewarding. Nice shop, and while I wanted a set of Ben Hogan irons, I settled on a set of Toski irons... they were fitted, and that process too about two hours. After completing my second visit to Big Sticks Golf in Burlington, MA, I decided to write a review…read morefor Yelp! My first visit was very positive and it prompted me to come back. I booked the golf simulator which allows for independent play as a solo or with a group of up to four where you can play practically any course isn't he world, practice at the range, or just analyze your swing. Because this is a golf simulator, you hit specially designed golf balls into a screen where various monitors and sensors pick up the trajectory, ball spin, velocity and forecast distance and accuracy. The results are very realistic and the distances from my own club selection are surprisingly accurate. While the tee to green is highly comparable to real life, the short game does take some adjustments. The staff at Big Sticks Golf was friendly and courteous in welcoming me, offering an empty bay to take some warmup swings and then logging me into the simulator. The rest was up to me. Again, the experience was lifelike enough to work on my swing after many winter months off. Where I was advised by their on-line booking site as well as talking to a member of the staff that an individual can play 18 holes of golf in under an hour at $55/hour. I played pebble beach and enjoyed it very much, despite losing too many strokes around the greens with finicky technology that requires some getting used to. For my second visit I booked 2 hours and played TPC Sawgrass twice since the PGA tour was there this week. Again the staff was courteous and assisted me in getting set up. While my tee to green game was still good, I experienced notice improvement in the short game vs. my previous visit. Using the "aim" on the monitor vs. trying to compensate with your actual stroke is key. I was very pleased with the experience and not only played the course twice shooting in the low 80s each round, but I also had 25 mins remaining to hit the range and work on various clubs and my swing. It was well worth the money and I am really looking forward to the warmer weather getting her to keep the momentum going on my regular outdoor game too. When it may be more convenient to play a quick round indoors, I will keep this establishment in mind all year round. As an amateur golfer who takes golf way too seriously, I am always looking for ways to improve my…read moregame. I picked up golf in the spring of 2014 and between youtube and a lot of blisters was able to get my handicap down to 13 by the 2015 season. With great progress having been made in the 2014 season, I was hoping to get my handicap down to single digits in 2015 and thought similar practices would achieve that, however as is common with most things, I found myself plateauing and looking for a way to improve. Over the 2015 summer I became friends with a man who is a scratch golfer and a former collegiate all-american golfer and he told me I had to book a lesson with Seán McTernan at Braeburn. Before I could even voice my concerns he told me to try Sean because he's great at helping a golfer improve on their own methods rather than trying to redesign students' swings based on his own. I decided to give Sean a shot and take my first golf lesson. The country club was gorgeous and the staff treated me like a full member of the club which was appreciated and let me use the practice green to warm up before my lesson. Sean was perfectly on time, picked me up in a golf cart and drove me to the practice area. He already knew who I was, where I worked, who referred me, etc which instantly took away any nerves. As it was my first lesson, we worked through a variety of shots to get a feel for where my game was and then proceeded to do a number of drills that helped me keep my club face closed and achieve a wider downswing which helped me to start drawing the ball. Sean also was able to video tape my swings and set me up with a Edufii account so I could track my progress, view the videos, and listen to his commentary. All in all I couldn't have asked for a better first lesson, my handicap now sits at 10, and I haven't shot over an 85 since July. I would HIGHLY recommend taking a lesson with Sean whenever you can. You will have no regrets.

The only reason I am not giving Brae Burn Country Club in Newton Massachusetts five out of five…read morestars is because of the pace of play in the summer months. Even though the course is in pristine condition, it does get very backed up and rounds can take a while. On a positive note, everything else is amazing about this place. The food is fantastic, the club house is scenic and beautiful, and the service is always friendly and well organized. The people at this club know the right kind of personal to hire, and the right kind of members to take in because every time I am here with my family friends and other friends who are members, I always have a wonderful experience. Brae Burn also has the perfect mix of golf, and social events, which is perfect for a country club. Not to mention a beautiful pool and tennis facility not far from the clubhouse. Also with indoor simulators for the winter months! Would definitely recommend if you live in the Newton area if your looking to join a country club. There's something for everybody!

My son is also learning to play, and the bays are roomy and private enough that two of us can share a bucket and bay to help each other and keep it social. It's a fairly no frills kind of place. Given the prices for entertainment these days, the prices for practice balls seems pretty reasonable. It would be nice if they had more variety of tee heights (or adjustable tees) to use on the mats.
