Stopped by Rawlins, WY and I'm really glad we did the tour! You honestly have to book the tour or you don't really see any of the actual prison. My kids (6, 7 years old) and my husband loved coming here. It was a great tour and we had a great tour guide (male, didn't catch his name) and it was really informative. We went to most of the rooms inside the prison and even went outside to see the yard. I wish they had more in the gift shop to purchase, but we ended up getting shirts and some penny coins from the machine. Definitely stop by if you are in the area! They have plenty of parking and even RV parking as we brought an RV. read more

If, for whatever reason, you find yourself in Rawlins you will kick yourself if you don't take this tour. So much history preserved in such an original state, and you get to tour almost all of it. They have anecdotes about prisoners, the wardens, and artifacts you just don't find in other places (including the gas chamber). If you're passing by, stop and see it. If you're in Rawlins, you're definitely doing this. read more

There are lots of interesting facts and artifacts. We had cold spots, the smell of sulfer occasionally, and heard growling noises when we were silent. Highly recommend for the history and the creepy factor. read more

Great tour, got a lot of the history to be told. Took it in June, and it was cool enough to understand what the prisoners endured in the winter. Tour guide Becky was very informative and gave detailed description of what life was like for the prisoners, guards and the town people. The museum is full of exhibits, murals and artifacts including the working gallows model. Toured Alcatraz, Old Idaho State Pen and other lockups, this one is a must see. read more

Well worth checking out. Make sure you do the tour. Very interesting and thorough trip through the prison. You get to visit the cell blocks, the dining room, the exercise yard, and end up at the gas chamber. Most of the tour is wheelchair accessible with the exception of the 16 stairs to death row. The guide offers many stories and anecdotes about the inmates. Tour takes about an hour. Small museum and gift store round out the experience. read more

Super fun stop. Took about two hours to walk through and we enjoyed our time. Definitely make me want to stay out of prison.

My kids (10 and 12 years old) and I enjoyed the tour given by Emily. We arrived a few minutes after the tour started, but her co-worker let us pay ($30 for the three of us) and then caught us up with Emily and her tour group. The hour-long tour was very informative and interesting to my kids and me. Well worth the stop when passing through Wyoming. read more

Folks running the tours where super nice and full of good information. The best info was that this spot is haunted and then they went on to tell us that we could talk a tour on 7/13/18 at night , that's Friday the 13th! We watched some you tube videos on the spot and its super haunted, we are in ! I will post another review after the tour, wish me luck! read more

Amazing tour! The prison can be very cold during the winter so bring a coat. The tour is definitely not white washed- they start it off by demonstrating how the gallows worked. You get to see the entire prison (including the gallows and gas chamber) and can sit in the gas chamber if you so choose. Really interesting tour- not to be missed. read more

This place was amazing! My husband and I were fascinated. Our tour guide was great and very knowledgeable, he had interesting stories about every part of the prison. Our7 year old was bored and really didn't enjoy it. Not sure if the young ones really know what they are getting to experience. The only sort of negative thing I could say is one of the prisioners there was very evil man and our tour guide did not feel comfortable talking about his crimes so we had to Google him after leaving But after reading what the man's offences were I don't blame the tour guide. We spent one night in Rawlins before heading to the Grand Tetons. This was the one attraction in Rawlins that we were looking forward to. We arrived 30 minutes before the next tour, which was perfect. We were able to spend some time learning about the prison in a few rooms that are not included in the tour. Our tour guide was awesome. She perfectly described the living conditions from the time the prison opened until the time it closed. It is so cool to see a historic prison. I've seen prisons like this in movie scenes, but never in person. It is a little depressing to know that people died from the freezing conditions in the prison. The gas chamber was also kind of creepy. If you're passing through Rawlins, I highly recommend stopping at this prison. read more

UPDATE!!! I was excited to drive out to Colorado again JUST TO STOP AT THIS PRISON FOR A TOUR. It was September, I checked the schedule before we left Salt Lake City and arrived just in time for the 3PM tour. WHERE THE THREE EMPLOYEES MANNING THE GIFT SHOP INFORMED ME THERE WAS NO 3PM TOUR AND I SHOULD HAVE CHECKED THE WEBSITE. (Which I HAD, which was not UPDATED!) I even offered them EXTRA MONEY JUST TO GIVE US A DAMN TOUR SINCE THIS WAS THE SECOND TIME I HAD DRIVEN TO THIS PRISON FROM CALIFORNIA AND THEY REFUSED, SAYING, "Wait for the 4PM tour." RUDE RUDE RUDE!!! (We couldn't wait since we had to be in Colorado before dark.) Yeah, the had approximately NO PEOPLE THERE COMPLETING THE 2PM TOUR but ALL THREE OF THEM HAD TO WATCH THE DAMN GIFT SHOP AND NOT GIVE ME AND MY PARTNER A TOUR AT 3PM. NO WONDER THIS PLACE IS "STRUGGLING" - THE EMPLOYEES ARE RUDE AND TURN AWAY PAYING CUSTOMERS WHEN THEY DO HAPPEN TO STOP BY. REPEAT: I TRIED TO VISIT THIS PLACE TWICE, OFFERED EXTRA MONEY AND BOTH TIMES WAS DENIED A TOUR. WYOMING FRONTIER PRISON MISSED OUT ON TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS JUST FROM DENYING MY BUSINESS. Came to the town to have a bite to eat and saw this. We were curios so we went in and took a tour. It was totally worth it! Very informative and entertaining. My daughter liked it too. Our tour guide was fantastic. She had a lot of great stories and explained everything we saw. It pretty much looks the same from when it closed. It was not expensive and worth the money. This was a great find! Arrived a bit late in the day and were so happy to catch the last tour. Were even able to take the dog in with us on the tour. This prison is designed much like Alcatraz in San Francisco. Still in very good shape and has the eerie-ness you'll love. The gas chamber, solitary confinement, the "self" execution by hanging display. What a big history. And, surprisingly, in sleepy lovely Rawlins. read more

I haven't been to Alcatraz but I have to say this was an AWESOME experience! The staff was helpful and guided our tour of 7 people nicely. It was awesome to see the old fashioned gallows and gas chamber. I was in awe of the huge dining room and tall cell blocks. this place reminded me of numerous prison movies and the eerie sense of foreboding in its dark corridors. If you are passing through It's worth an hour or 2 here but if not just don't even bother to drive to WY. The price was a great selling point and we bought $20 worth of touristy merch. it was a great tour in a unique setting read more

We had the opportunity this weekend to go to Frontier Prison, It was hauntingly beautiful and I was in awe. We were with friends and we walked around the prison and I had the opportunity to meet the director Tina, She was rushed and I understood she was very busy. That evening we went to the Haunted prison event, it was fun and a little cheesy, but we totally enjoyed is as this is what Halloween is, as I was walking through this relic in the night, I thought, I just want to know where we are! When the walk through was over I found Tina and asked if we could come back at her convenience, as we were from Utah and leaving on Monday, to see the prison in daylight, I affirmed that I did not care that it was decorated for Halloween, and I offered her a generous sum. I was told "No, I need a day off" I understand setting limits, and I am not a princess, I assured her we would be back, I went home and watched You tube items about Frontier prison and became increasingly interested, I then decided on my way home I would check at the Frontier prison again and offer again money for a tour, if by chance it was open. It is off season and I did not expect it to pan out. Lucky me Sara came to the door and said "I would love to show you around and this is a lovely donation and our building is totally supported by donations" We began our tour, She was very informative, gracious and lovely. I asked her position and she told me "second in command" About 2/3 through the tour, Tina came, became very visibly and verbally angry at Sara, we were standing there, prior to that time I was willing to chalk her rudeness up to being tired, but at this point I found her repulsive. I felt for Sara and perhaps the position I had put her in. I loved the prison, my husband and I are very well off and donate money regularly, it was roaming through my mind to donate to Frontier prison, I am not totally against it, and I will continue to consider it. But I want my funds donated to somewhere that it will be used successfully and I cannot imagine this surviving with the lack of people skills that currently the prison is being ruled by, It occurred to me, Tina should be "Second in command" as I am sure she also has a love for the prison, but not the skills Sara has to see that it progresses through the ages. I still love the place, I am going to research grants for this, but I will be leaving the contact person to be Sara as I think it would thrive better under her care. To Tina, rethink your process, I want to see this work, but I think you need to come to terms that anything that survives on donation needs a little kissing up! I recommend all see this wondrous relic! It is a beautiful building from days gone by...I would love it to stay that way! read more

We had friends travel from Utah to go to the Haunted House tour at the Frontier Prison. Afterwards, they asked Tina if they could go on the regular tour to see what they just saw in the dark. Tina informed them that Monday was her day off and she would NOT give a tour, even though my friends offered her a large donation. By chance, our friends drove by on Monday on their way back to Utah, in case the prison was open. Sara was working and was excited to accept the donation to the prison and attempted to give a tour for our traveling friends. Tina came by and showed her true colors and had a fit that a tour was given on Sara's day off. REALLY???? Tourists offer a LARGE donation for a quick tour and that doesn't work for Tina? I think it is time to replace Tina with someone who cares about the prison and is EXCITED to show it to tourists that travel here to see it. It is time to replace Tina Hill as the director of the Frontier Prison and give it to someone who really cares!!!! read more
