Ssssh! This place is a secret!!!…read more Sorry, but sometimes you get a little bit like that when you find a blast from the past like this. This is a proper bowls club, complete with little old men and hilarious bar staff. Drinks are CHEAP, chips are decent and if you can be bothered bowling it's also very well priced (where else can you have fun for $4?) Just don't spread it around too hard please. Oh, and make sure you have a designated driver. It's at the bottom of Bardon so walking anyway is a long, up hill trek.

As you're heading out from Paddington, the row of boutique stores, pubs and cafes tapers off and all of a sudden you find yourself following a long, winding country like road, driving over quaint little bridges and dipping down into gullies. The Bardon Bowls Club is nestled in one of these said gullies. It's a well hidden gem. Bardon Bowls Club is a no frills kind of establishment. The most notable decor feature is the XXXX backing against the beer taps. The drinks are ludicrously cheap. Since when can you get a cider for $4.50? You can take a seat inside the club, but I reckon it's nicer if you head outside to the lawn. The bowls club has a lush backdrop of wilderness that sets the scene for an easy afternoon. If you hand in a $20 deposit, you can play bowls for $4. Because it's well tucked away, the bowls club doesn't really get a whole lot of business. It's really a place for the locals. Personally, I like being able to have an entire bowls club to myself whenever I want it.

I've just been there for a Christmas party and its casual, fun atmosphere made it the perfect venue for our party of 12. We lingered in the bar for a while, having some drinks and sausage rolls before making our way to our table. Not knowing how huge the mains would be, we ordered some garlic bread (so good and buttery) and bruschetta. When my salt'n'pepper calamari ($18.50) arrived, I was feeling pretty bad for eating all the nibblies, as it was a really nice meal. Chips were crunchy and the calamari was tender. My partner had the BBQ pork ribs ($24.50) and the serving was absolutely huge. Not the best ribs I've ever tasted, but good value for money. Unfortunately, rain prevented us from playing lawn bowls, but it would have been a great end to our party. We were all feeling the need to get up and move around after all that food and drink! Highly recommend this as a place for a cheap but hearty eat or a group function.

Having friends who live in the apartments opposite makes this place a pretty regular haunt for me…read more I've never actually played bowls here but there are plenty of other reasons to visit. They have a weekend buffet breakfast which is pretty good and some great lunch time specials. They also have trivia on a Thursday night which is loads of fun and gets plenty of regular attendees. The prizes aren't great but it's not about winning it's about having a good time! Just be sure to book a table in advance. Friday nights they have a happy hour from 4-6pm and cheap bar food. I do like the pizzas and dim sum platter here but otherwise I wouldn't really recommend anything from the dinner menu. The staff are always really friendly though.

For such a busy time of the year, the food we ordered was brought out to us in a very short amount of time and was a very enjoyable meal. It's a great location for very home-styled meals and burgers that are at a reasonable price. Despite the quantity of customers and the intense heat, staff were very approachable and hospitable. This venue is also down the road from many bus stations and the transferral ferry to Newfarm, and so it is easily accessible. I would definitely recommend the Norman Park Bowls Club for a family outing where you can enjoy a hot meal in the breeze whilst Dad can still have his beer at the bar, and even get in a quick game of bowls.

They have three greens and there is always plenty of room. After a game of bowls head to the bistro for $2 tacos and burritos! I will say that it's not the tastiest Mexican food I have had but for $2 it's not too bad. The taco shells are a little chewy and the filling lacks seasoning, you usually don't notice with a few beers under your belt. The few times I have been here the bistro has been deserted. I can't really comment on other meals because I have only ever been on taco night. The drinks are really cheap which is great! I love barefoot bowls and I have played at a few clubs, sometimes the members can be a bit clicky and don't dig newbies on their greens but at Chermside everyone is really friendly and welcoming. I definitely recommend for your next social gathering.

You take your shoes off and get your bowls ball and bowl that sucker down the green until you get close to the white ball, not sure what it's called. It's great fun and you get to do it barefoot! Best of all, there's a full bar inside with things you can order to nibble on. You will have to book first though to ensure you get a lane... you may even need 2 like we did because we kept going into someone else's lane instead. If you're really lucky, the old guy from inside will take pity on you enough to come out onto the green and actually show you how to stand and how to move your feet to bowl the right way. So not all your balls have to go into the gutter after all! I thought I was winning damnit! Despite the simplicity of it all, it does actually require some sort of skill with this sport and we'll definetely be back to challenge that other team with the little dragon looking things on their balls. We will win next time! I know the rules now! Another fact: a few local radio celebs have been spotted bowling here as well.
