I'd give WVUM 4 stars, but they've got into the habbit of taping their shows and playing the same ones over and OVER again. It's still better than anything else on Miami radio. They lean towards downtempo electro these days, but you still hear stuff outside the genre. Tune in and support'em YO! read more

I love you WVUM. You are my only escape from our local Radio Refuse... Your signal/transmitter (which originally was build and installed by the UM Engineering students back in the 60s - illegally of course) is stronger then ever and your update/ redesigned website with Live streaming and DJ lists is a much needed and welcome upgrade. The shows may repeat and the DJs may at times struggle through an announcement or two, but I will continue to listen...because you are all students (a fully run student station) learning, polishing your skills and sharing the music you love. While doing work-study back in my UM student days... I can't remember how many time I've repainted that closet hole we all so adorably called a "studio".. Hopefully once the new University Center is built (they are going to build a new UC ...right?) you will receive a proper space from which you'll continue to throw down the amazing lists of indie tracks and live in studio performances of our local artists. WVUM makes UM feel like some miniature mecca of a liberal arts charged campus. Listening to the format-free station, you might wonder whether you've hopped aboard the flannel caravan heading north to Wesleyan, Bard, Sarah Lawrence, or RISD (home to Vegan Radio, btw)... but here we are in sunny Miami and WVUM has born itself out of the university's athletically focused ashes. Once my Sirius XM subscrption expires, I won't be sad to see it go. 90.5 plays the kind of variety I could only find by marrying a handful of the XM stations together. My favorites include AM Wonderland, Vamos a la Playa, or Electric Kingdom, and while the playlists range from electro to dreamwave to reggae to folk to sing-and-dance indie, they also often feature Miami's rising crop of talented musicians. Dear WVUM, You have brought back what radio stations should sound like. You play anything and everything that the general radio stations DONT play. I LOVE you for that. Lately, you play a prerecorded (I think its recorded on Saturdays) show on Monday mornings that I ADORE, filled with trance, trip-hop, jungle and drum & bass beats. Where else in Miami is anyone EVER going to find that?!!? In the afternoons you play this quiet and chill beat mix. Throughout the day I can count on anything and everything from almost any year. I love my satellite radio, but it's difficult not to tune in to the "Vamos a la Playa" show on 90.5, expertly mixed by Laura of Miami. With all the chillwave-y disco, the show might as well be made just for me. And even with all the channels on Sirius XM, there's nothing at all like it. I'm pretty good at grabbing MP3s from the Internet, but much of the time LoM stumps me and plays stuff that doesn't even show up on a Google search - half the stuff she plays doesn't even officially exist yet, not even on the most cutting-edge hipster blogs out there. Granted, there are times when I turn on VUM and I hear something absurdly bad, like Hungarian accordion fusion-punk or something, but such is college radio - the only non-pirate terrestrial airspace that retains the true "spirit of radio." The good outweighs the bad; this is radio the way it was meant to be. Oh, and they broadcast 'Canes sports, of course. read more

i'd like to respond to the comment about the monotone djs: WVUM has upheld the tradition of the monotonous dj providing dull and pedestrian commentary for over a decade now, i don't see anything wrong with perpetuating what has become a token quality in the station's witless personality. so what if their nasal recounting of track lists goes a little bit like, "uhhh that was ahhmmm super furry animals, and before THAT was uhh, architecture in ..hel..sinki? i believe? uhmmm yah, and ahhmmm....." - that is precisely what you are tuning in for. you'll derive the same effect from shopping at certain clothing stores, reading certain magazines, or eating too many nerds. that being said, i commend thee, WVUM, and i'd keep it locked if i weren't busy listening to the dulcet tones of Delilah After Dark on Sunny 104 FM! read more

As a 60 year old 70s and 80s rock aficionado and main stream pop and oldies fans, I was enamored by the music played on this station. It had a culturally organic, new but classic dimension that really suprised me and music I have never heard before- a very positive, upbeat and cheerful musical selection. Congratulations on bringing interesting and exciting new music to someone who hated alternative music. I'm a fan! read more

WVUM is University of Miami's (UM) radio station. there's a few shows i really enjoy and try and tune into whenever i'm driving. it's a crapshoot though, cause they're required to play a variety of stuff. one hour might be hardcore rap, the next will be brit pop and after that will be lute music from 17th-century Strasbourg. read more

At 5:30 am when I'm driving to work this is the only station i will listen to if i don't have my ipod in the car and at work i stream it so, i can have continuous music. I love the fact that they play indie, electronic, trance music but, at the same time they have classical music in the mid day. Also, i love the fact that the commercials are short therefore, its packed with more music. read more

This station saves Miami twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week! Without WVUM I never would have survived in this overdeveloped commercial wasteland. I think it was WVUM first introduced me to Basehead, Atari Teenage Riot... alright, I might be dating myself, but even today I still listen to them through the internet when I'm home in SF, but you bet your ass everytime I come back to visit I torture my mom with non-stop WVUM patronage, and she doesn't even appear to mind! Unfortunately, their biggest mistake was letting their best dj, Mr. "John Pookie" graduate... that guy was the funniest with the Best taste in music. This use to be by far the best radio station that I ever have found anywhere.... Starting this year, it seamed that a banker must of bought the station and put his stupid son or daughter to choose what they think it's music.... What they are choosing is Awful !!! and an insult, even to bad music. Hope you realize you need a change soon, before you loose your audience. read more
