Hook Up Muay Thai Boxing literally changed my life. After years on the road with a rock band,…read moreeating bar food and drinking, and living an extremely unhealthy lifestyle in many ways, I reached a point where I realized that I could either continue to get less healthy, or do something positive and improve myself. So I joined a major gym chain. Although I liked the gym, after a year, I was not achieving the results I wanted. I had met one of the instructors at Hook Up through a casual fitness kickboxing class, and he invited me to try a class at Hook Up. From the moment I walked in I was hooked. Hook Up oozes credibility. It's hidden (like some back-alley boxing club straight out of the Rocky franchise) behind a tile shop in that industrial section of the city north of Orfus road. As I stepped through the door, I was struck by creak of the bags swinging on the chain, the sound of gloves hitting pads, and the whipping of jump ropes. It was a Sunday afternoon, and the place was busy with people of all walks of life, from couples with pre-toddlers in tow, training recreationally, to competitive athletes getting ready for provincial, national, and international competition. Far from being intimidating, I found the owner/head trainer Jim (National Co-ordinator of CASK: Thai Boxing) and his wife Theodora (a national champion) to be welcoming, and they immediately set me at ease. I quickly got to know everyone there, and I was hooked! The instructors are world class, there are several national champions training there, and the club takes a whole-life approach to health and fitness. After a nutritional consult with Jim, I completely revamped my diet and began a new phase in my life. Hook Up Muay Thai Boxing is a member of the Canadian Amateur Sport Kickboxing, the governing body for the sport in Canada. That brings with it a lot of bonuses not available to members of not accredited clubs (notably access to insurance while training or sparring). It also means that if you want and are able, you can train and compete at CASK sanctioned events and even try to make the National Team! I have been a member of Hook Up now for a year and a half, and in that time, I've reached fitness and health goals I never dreamed possible for myself. I'm 34 lbs lighter than I was when I got married 3 years ago, and my energy level has never been higher. I can run farther than I ever thought I'd be able to, and I'm more confident than I've ever been. In fact, in less than two weeks I'll be fighting in my first K1 rules kickboxing tournament. And that is a LONG way from where I was as a travelling musician, believe me......

This is EMA's second location with the original location being near Port Union and Lawrence. We decided to come to this location because it offered the adult class and the junior class at the same time which meant that my hubby and daughter could go to class together. What I love the most about EMA is the positive energy you feel the moment you walk into the school. Everyone greets you by your first name (which I find is incredibly amazing with the number of people that go through this place) with a firm hand shake and a bow. Children are definitely the main focus here and they are treated with respect and honesty by the staff and the teachers alike. And I find it impressive that they do not shy away from teaching discipline to kids that can sometimes become disruptive and unruly. We've also hosted my daughter's birthday party here and they offer a full service birthday party for the little ones where all you have to do is show up with a birthday child and enjoy the party with them without busying around trying to make sure that your guests are all taken care of. I can't say enough good things about EMA and I hope to remain an EMA family for a long time to come.

The guidance and compassion of the instructors helped my children to be more confident and assertive as well as improving their physical fitness and discipline. My children attended for 6 years before quitting to try other activities. I joined shortly after my children after watching them in class for a month. I was never physically active before and found my first class very challenging. But the instructors and my fellow students were so supportive. I went to the location near Yonge & Eglinton, expecting to see a dojo like in the pictures on their website (bright, airy, clean). I was disappointed to see that it was in a basement, the walls were dirty & had holes in them. The mats on the floor were also worn looking & dirty. We talked to Chris about classes, etc & he was very knowledgable, nice & friendly. But I was put off by the condition of the practise room. It was one room and a small room for doing martial arts. Which is probably why there are holes in the walls. We watched a class for about 30 minutes with about 8 guys in it. They seemed kind of cramped. I'm giving them a middle rating since I didn't actually take a class. But for the location I would give them less. They might want to invest in new mats or at least take some time to thoroughly clean them & repair the holes in the wall & repaint the walls. Seeing this place didn't make me want to take a class there. Sorry to say that but just my opinion.

Do Not enter a long-term contract with these predators!…read more I paid a one-year membership and started training in the gym last Sep. Unfortunately, I got a bad knee injury during the training just less than a month out. I had to rest for weeks before trying again, and just realized that I could not continue. Hoping that I could recover soon, I did not cancel my membership as they have this "save time" allowing members to carry over the missing training time and extend after the contract expiration date. This was a HUGE mistake. In Mar 2023, I knew that I had to move out of Toronto in May due to a job change, and started contacting them for a refund by email and phone. I contacted them in the next month, none of my emails was replied, phone calls were rarely answered. In frustration, I went to the facility in person. To my dismay, the admin person accused me of showing up without an appointment, and their manager Joshua show no compassion after knowing my situation. Despite having trained for only five weeks in total, they refused to refund me for the entire duration, claiming that the "save time" policy didn't apply to refunds. They only agreed to refund me for the months after I left Toronto, which was four months since May. I have trained in multiple MMA gyms before, and I can confidently say that this is the worst one I've experienced. The only saving grace was the wonderful coaches, but they cannot compensate for the gym's predatory practices. I am utterly disappointed and feel cheated. I sincerely hope others do not make the same mistake I did and steer clear of this gym.
