Lots of fascinating history of food and the science of food. Then we found a host of alternative music shows (Prog-Bog "music so progressive it hasn't been invented yet"); Mudcat Blues and Strictly Vinyl. We listen while we work in the garden or cook. Some of this is prerecorded and played from a machine, but when Pirate Joe is on the air, he's got the actual records in his hands and he'll tell you all you need to know about each one. P. J. (Pirate Joe) Ferraro and his radio station is a national treasure with an extraordinary library of American popular music across all genres. Somebody should put this on line. All of the DJs are volunteers and work on their own free time, without pay. I visited the studio last week during their radiothon and was pleasantly surprised with the shows J-Magic's Jambalaya (Where the Guitar is the Star) and Spoonful of Blues. Their commitment to providing free radio (ie free of commercials/ads) is really awesome and they are even available streaming online at www.valleyfreeradio.org. I listen on Tuesday nights, when the above mentioned programs are airing. I hope that VFR continues to be on the airwaves for years to come.

I've had the good fortune to have bombed around a few beach towns over the past couple of years,…read moremostly on the West Coast, but some on the East Coast too. They are fun and generally pretty low key. Unfortunately, if you don't come armed with your own music, the radio in many of these places seems to drift towards "Freebird" and "We Built This City on Rock 'n'Roll". Ugh! I don't mind a yearly dose of Freebird, but that's kind of the end of it for me. Enter WEHM. (http://www.wehm.com/) They call themselves "progressive" which might be a bit optimistic, but they throw in some Cure, X, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, etc. in with their Bruce Springsteen, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, etc. It's definitely a rock station, but a smart one. You won't have to get your plaid shirt and duct taped shorts out any more than your black frock and pancake makeup to listen. They also play just enough new stuff to keep it interesting. One of the things that I always LOVE about these little stations, and by no means is this phenomenon isolated just to small beach towns, is the locally produced commercials. "Hi, I'm Jim, the Car Doctor." "Hi, I'm Rod, the Car Nurse" (Together) "We wanna FIX YOUR CAR" Or whatever. They're always good for a little giggle. WEHM is no exception. They have the surfer dude from the local surf shop giving updates on the tide, etc. Funny stuff. So what, I'm easily amused. If you're on 27E looking for a radio station, you could do a lot worse than this.
