I hate buying presents for people when I know they want for nothing. A lot of my friends with…read moredisposable incomes usually buy what they want when they see it making Christmas and birthday presents unnecessary. As a result, I've taken to buying gifts from Oxfam. Oxfam is a not-for-profit organisation who works with people from developing countries to overcome poverty. One of their strategies is to enable the villagers to use local resources to make products which are sold through Oxfam stores. These products include interesting musical instruments, chocolates, coffees, traditional art, jewellery and cookware. Profit from sales are returned to the villages to assist with development. They also have these fantastic gift ideas where you can buy a family in a developing country a goat, chicken or even mosquito nets. The gifts start at $10 and make a great Christmas card as well. This year I've purchased a gorgeous piglet for a mere $30 -a bargain in any currency. So the next time you're stuck on a present idea, forget the platter or scented candle. Head to Oxfam and buy someone a pig.

If you like Alice in Wonderland, you will love Templex Nursery. I discovered this little gem when I…read morewas driving around lost along Beenleigh road one day. You don't have to be a gardener to enjoy this place. Yes, they have a lot of bargain plants for sale but it's just like visiting a botanical garden. The plants are not your standard garden centre range but are cultivated exoticas - once I even saw a thousand dollar Gingko Biloba tree! The owners are clearly artists because they have giant ceramic sculptures incorporated into the landscape. Some are kitschy, some are a bit naughty but all show the owners have a sense of humour. And just when you think things can't get any odder, you run into their collection of beautiful pheasants. I told my sister about this place and she took her two kids. My nephew had a ball running around the maze like set up, weaving between trees, ducking under giant ferns, not knowing what plant, animal or sculpture will pop up around the corner. I could spend hours exploring this place and the owners are so good natured, they probably wouldn't mind. NB: This nursery is a bit hard to find. There is a sign on Beaudesert Road but it comes up very quickly so you may find yourself doing several u-turns. There's plenty of parking on site though once you eventually find it.

What a great nursery! I always find something new and interesting! No question is too dumb and their advise is based on years of experience.....they can show you their results e.g. lotus plants which I have killed MANY...now flowering and strong and healthy. I recently took a friend from interstate to the "quirky nursery" and with over 30 years of running an orchard, working in a nursery and cultivating all sorts of amazing plants herself), she loved TempleX . She was excited to find such a huge variety of plants (some she had not seen for years) and found the owners to be very open and lovely people. Other friends (more local) have also found the place to be a treasure and not one negative comment! I just wish they had a coffee shop are there are some lovely spots to sit. This venue is ideal for children too with fish, poultry and lots of trees. There is also a snake story, and the owners are very good with visiting children. But one of the big attractions is the funky art ...odd bits of driftwood, statues and plants have been turned into art! Great place and take your friends too, they'll love it!
