It's a fascinating history And one that you have to spend a little bit of time going to the museum and understanding the different angles. I guess that's a purpose of a museum, right? We learned a little bit about Judge Isaac, Parker, as one of the first influences that had to deal with the wild West murderers and people committing heinous crimes that until he arrived, didn't face many consequences as there was no federal government system that was in control of the area and the tribunal process did not cover non-native Americans. Fascinating history. You can even see a replica of the courthouse as well as the gallows as they were over 160 people hang here. Take a rock across the railroad tracks and read a bit about the trail of tears. There are plenty of areas to contemplate the history. Bring a picnic, there are many places to relax and spread out. The museum is actually free, is air-conditioned and had clean restrooms

The World's Tallest Hill boasts beautiful views of the rolling hills of Eastern Oklahoma, those same hills and mountains that reach over from Western Arkansas and the Ozarks. In the fall, I can imagine these hills are on "fire" with fall color, a great destination for central-south America for fall-color viewing. Why does it earn only 3 stars? 2 things knock a star each off: 1. The road up to The World's Tallest Hill (yes, I'm going to keep saying that!) is a nightmare upkeep-wise. Pot-craters, crumbling roads, you could almost consider it an off-road experience. As a hiker, I typically care loosely about the road to the top of a high place, but if there is going to be one, it should be in good repair. 2. The top, or "peak" could use some sprucing up. The viewpoint is great! And the official sign is wonderful! But it's a little awkward up there. Again, probably just another "unkempt" issue that is easy to resolve. Eventually I could see a cute gift/snack/trinket shop up there to cash out on literally being The World's Tallest Hill, almost a satirical approach, while still pretty impressive! Who would have thought Eastern Oklahoma was the home of The World's Tallest Hill. I was impressed as it was, but could stand to be even more impressed again!

It's at the planters peanut factory…read more When I worked at a canning factory for the tin cans that planters used to pack there peanuts and mix nuts this sign is at the entrance of Planters peanut factory. It's definitely a huge sign that you can see from the road. I definitely wouldn't make a road trip to see it.

The Master Gardeners and U of A care for the park and it was much cleaner and nicer than I expected. Multiple gazebos, murals, hedges and potted plants, and a fountain and statue in the middle. Alma is the #1 spinach producer so they have the Popeye Gardens to represent that. Definitely worth checking out. Lots of parking available and a nice downtown main street near the high school with sidewalks.

He looks like a proper distinguished gentleman, complete with top hat, monacle, white gloves and spats carrying a cane. Mister Peanut appears on every can and jar of Planters peanuts and has even appeared on TV as an animated character. This statue is in front of the Planters facility (canning? packaging?) in Fort Smith. It is accessible from the employee parking lot. He is 30 feet tall and looks exactly the same as the ones on my can of nuts. My visit was a quick in and out, so there was not enough time for any security patrol to get mobilized. Allegedly, there are smaller Mister Peanuts and a sit-with-Mister-Peanut photo-op but these are closer to the facility and in a specific "visitors only" area. If you find it, let me know. Everything is perfectly cast and performed in one of several theaters configurations perfectly suited for each. One of the most fun things about attending a performance here is going early enough to enjoy a local beer, featured wine or special themed cocktail. So clever and always enjoyable.

This landmark is the final resting place for some of the original settlers or pioneers of the area…read more It's located right off the Quachita trail. There is a sign posted at the cemetery that explains the history. Land was patented by James L. Witherspoon in April, 1861. After his death, E.S. Mosher acquired the land in 1897 with the exception of a 2 acre tract of land that became a family cemetery and for 20 residents of Rich Mountain. The sign lists their names. There is a sad story about the young Wilkerson girl that died and is buried there. The Forest Service acquired the land on August 21, 1923.

We were so lucky to have a history professor from the University give us a personal tour. It's simply incredible to have the entire home furnished with actual family furniture, portraits, clothing, etc. All of it! We highly recommend and will be back for their annual Christmas party. It's free but they do take donations!
