It is the wisest decision I ever made. Before long, my entire family was training together. Now I am 50 years old and everybody in my family has benefited from the life skills we learned. The Sensei is one of the senior instructors in the International Shotokan Karate Federation. Not only is the Sensei top notch, he has a group of assistant instructors that know the art and teach it to exact standards. The dojo philosophy is one that is in keeping with the disciplines and culture of Japanese Karate. My personal experience there has been one of constant encouragement but I have also been challenged to push myself farther than I felt I could go. At this dojo, the new students train along side the advanced students. Because of this the advance students never forget the basics and the beginners learn to respect themselves and each other because of the examples set before them. I would recommend this dojo to any student regardless of experience or age.

All of whom have a great deal of knowledge and experience. Mr. Pohle is a seventh degree Dan who also serves on the technical coomettee for ISKF which is an international karate association. I find the atmosphere in the dojo similar to that of a large family. The times offered for the classes is convenient and the fees are very reasonable. I also like that you don't have to sign a year long contract unlike other martial art schools.

But I'm not going to lie I was a little intimidated taking a class when I watch their videos on Instagram. But a couple of days ago. I said to myself life is to short. What the heck! Just go for it. I didn't want to go alone. So I bought my little brother along with me. If you want to take a free intro class just go online to their website and sign up. The intro class is so worth it to actually see what it's all about. I've seen kickboxing on lifetime shows. But let me tell you. It's nothing like what you see on TV and how easy actors and actresses make it seem. It was a serious WORKOUT!!! But a great workout! At one point I did feel a little light headed. And thought I was going to pass the hell out. Lol! Smh! I look over at my little brother like helpppp!!! Lol! I couldn't make it to my water. So I just leaned on the wall to take some deep breaths. I couldn't go out like that and pass out on my first day. Everyone motivates each other. No one judges each other. I loved that! You don't find that at most places. Wow those women and men had me all pump up! I'm trying to be fit this winter just like them! The membership prices weren't to bad too. They also have punch cards for a certain amounts of classes too. I'm not going to share all the juice. Cause what you need to do at this very moment. Yes you can do it!!! Go and sign up for their intro class to see what it's all about. Its super worth it! Then you can go from there!!!

Pretty good gym, but i've never see the owners/main trainer not even once in my time thereread more

During this time, I have traveled around to various gyms, learning from many blackbelts and training with many different people. With that, I can say that Breakaway Jiu-Jitsu is one of my favorite locations to train at. I trained here for about 12 hours during my 2 weeks visit to the Newport News area, and I have much to say about this awesome gym.  If you're searching for a jiu-jitsu gym that combines top-notch instruction, a welcoming community, and a commitment to personal growth, Breakaway Jiu-Jitsu is the gym for you. The instructors here are nothing short of exceptional. Their expertise is evident, but what truly sets them apart is their ability to teach complex techniques in a clear, accessible way. Whether you're a complete beginner or a seasoned practitioner, you'll find their guidance both insightful and encouraging. They're always willing to take the time to address individual questions and provide personalized feedback. The atmosphere at Breakaway Jiu-Jitsu is incredibly supportive. It's clear that everyone from the seasoned black belts to the new white belts shares a common goal of mutual respect and improvement. The camaraderie is evident, and the positive energy makes every class enjoyable, no matter how challenging. Additionally, the facilities are exceptional. The mats are clean, well-maintained, and spacious enough to accommodate all levels of training. At one point, there looked to be about 16 students rolling on the mats. The gym also offers a variety of classes, including GI and no-GI options, which keeps the training fresh and exciting. Personally, I am intrigued with two classes: "Pathway to Purple Belt" and "4 oz Fridays." As I understand, both classes are necessary to earn a purple belt. I do not see these two classes as a hurdle to purple belt, but as an exciting challenge and an opportunity to improve my skills as a martial artist. Overall, Breakaway Jiu-Jitsu stands out as a gem in the jiu-jitsu community. It's not just a place to learn martial arts; it's a place to build confidence, make friends, and push yourself beyond what you thought possible. I highly recommend this location, and I will be training at this gym every time I return to the Newport News area.

Besides the location and staff, the best part about it for me is the dry sauna and the stationary bicycles facing the windows. I'm also super stoked that it became 24 hours starting this month/April...at least the main workout area is. The only cons I've experienced so far are: 1. The showers were only cold water at the time I tried them - but, in all fairness, it was end of a Sunday and lots of kids there. 2. There is only one Hip Abduction & Adduction Machine/Dual Inner/Outer Thigh Machine and someone is always using it. Despite being at the gym for hours, I've never seen it open so I have to use my thigh bands at home. There really needs to be two of them. Many of the machines around it go unused so they could easily be swapped out for a 2nd Dual thigh machine. Otherwise, this place is great and I feel safe when I'm there. Since it is such a nice YMCA, I can see why it gets so busy at certain times. I adjust my workout time when I can to avoid the crowds, but I understand that not everyone can do that.

I work with them individually well also in a group to be able to get them to swim safely. The changing rooms were very nice and quite clean and private, which was really great as well. Everyone was super nice and super welcoming and we really had a great time taking some lessons there. I would join the YMCA if I didn't already belong to another gym though, because it looks like it has a heck of a lot of stuff. Even a climbing wall! And lots of classes and activities too! Might have to look into that sometime soon!
