So doing two in one. 2018 -I moved to SC and wasn't sure how to do my taxes as my previous state didn't have State income Tax. Natalie was super nice and got me set up. Matt listened and answered all of my questions. My Taxes where done in a breeze! 2019- They helped me out with some complex issues I had that were from a few years back and that I didn't know until last year. Jesse was super helpful and made it very easy for me to understand. 2020- I moved once again and now to Texas. My taxes will once again be a bit hectic not only because of the move, but also because of Covid-19. I will not trust anyone else to do my taxes than Newton CPA.

What we found to be disappointing was when we came in to pay and pick up our documents Jesse sat 10 feet from where we were standing and did not make an effort to say hello or thank us for our business. He was clearly available as he answered the admin assistants question she asked on behalf of us. The client care piece was clearly missing. The admin assistant was lovely to deal with.

When I arrived Von, my tax preparer, started the appointment off fine and gathered my documents. I am filing multiple years, so I expected some kind of questioning, but all I got were assumptions. When I pulled my laptop out to get the last document, my preparers attitude changed and became very short. I have a Trans Rights sticker on my laptop, and I believe this is what did it. He then shuffled me out within 20 minutes of me arriving, and told me he would get to them when he could but it would be after tax deadline. I was also severely annoyed because my documents were in front of him and I introduced myself at the beginning of the appointment, only to have him call me the wrong name more than 5 times. This man also took a personal phone call in the time I was there in his office. When I called another store in the area to see if this was normal practice, she told me she would contact the store. Apparently Von, had another appointment he was in. This is curious to me, because I had schedule a 2 hour appointment, and he was with another client 45 minutes after my initial appointment time. When I picked up my documents to take them to another place, I said my name was Dakota LastName and he repeated to call me Dallas. This was the worst experience I've had in years! 10/10 worst place to get taxes done.

I had a pretty standard tax return, except I had recently started a small business. You have thought the "tax professionals" at H&R Block would know what to do when dealing with such a common issue, but "tax professional" means "not an accountant." It translates loosely to "someone who can take a test that certifies them to fill in tax documents for someone else." None of these people are accountants. How do I know? They came up with three (!!!) different return amounts for my taxes. After signing off on my return the first time, I got a call the next day that there was something else I needed to sign. Except it wasn't an additional sheet, it was a completely different return with a different return amount. I spoke to someone who said my original "tax professional" messed up the return and did not know how to write off start up expenses. I asked about my return, and this person said she would check with someone who is "really good" with this stuff, who was not onsite. I was told to sign off on a third copy, not filled out, so I would not have to come up after they figured this out, and they would call me about my return. Never got that call, and only found out later they sent in a third return with another different amount. I can't speak for other branches, but how can these people not know how to make a few basic writeoffs for a new business? I've learned from my own mistake and will be going to a real accountant this year, most of which seem to be cheaper than what H&R Block charges. Hopefully they can fix whatever H&R did with my return last year.
