Technically a chain (because there are now two of them), this is a very small independent player, competing on Reading's "coffee corner" with six other shops within 100 yards (Starbucks, Costa, Coffee Republic, West Cornwall Pasty, Pret and the one-off independent Picnic). This location of Workhorse (the other is in West Reading) is in the historic King George Hotel, believed to be one of the very oldest buildings in Reading and dates back to 1423. The shop is a completely unique split-level and since they only opened recently, is still quaintly hand finished. Certainly a nicer character than the cookie cutter Starbucks. If the competition is only about the coffee and the service, Workhorse wins hands down. Choosing my beans (eight little tubs of Guatemalan, Ethiopian, Kenyan and more I can't recall), they were ground right then and there, put into a one-off drip filter and hand watered into my coffee cup. Talk about fresh! And the food choices are all local, which made my ham, chorizo and cheese ciabatta completely guilt-free. The guy serving me was happy to talk coffee. He was particularly engaging regarding their style of coffee making as well as my thoughts on french press. He didn't get drawn into comparisons with "the other guys" across the street. (Literally, across the street - you can see their bright green banner in the window in my picture!) All of that would be worth five stars, but I have to take one back because sadly, there is no free wireless available in the shop. As I read online, that's not the demographic of customer they want to reach. That's okay. Since that's the market I'm in, I'll pop in for great coffee but it won't be my hangout.

It doesn't seem logical to split them into separate 'businesses' on Yelp, since the coffee, the layout and display and everything else is exactly the same. I mentioned the Palomino my earlier review - two shots of espresso with foamed milk - and it's now my beverage of choice. It's served in a small three ounce cup, which I think is perfect. No wasted calories or headache, just straight to the caffeine boost. Paired with a 'pain au chocolate' (aka "chocolate croissant"), it hits the major food groups (chocolate, coffee and pastry) together. For £3, a fantastic deal for breakfast when I was too lazy to eat at home. Love it, love it, love it!

You would be hard pushed to spend more than a tenner a head for a main meal and a cake for dessert. the shop sells fresh bread, cakes, frozen goods, snacks, cooked meats and cheeses. Ask the staff for advice- i have had some wonderful chorizos and cheeses on their recommendations. Dont' leave without buying a few of their little empanyadas (mini pies) and some cola cao (MUCH better than nesquick!)

Very smooth and not even slightly burned like at another chain I won't mention but it rhymes with Barshmucks. I also enjoyed their banana breakfast sweet bread with the coffee. Stars deducted because this location has neither power outlets or a wireless network. That said, it was comfortable and it did give me the opportunity to catch my breath before starting the shopping.

Their menu offers a lot of healthier options, which are often hard to find outside of London and they take pride in where they source the food from - a lot of it being local or even from award-winning the butchers next door! Very good coffee and homemade cakes are the naughtier options compared to the excellent smoothies, wraps and salads on offer. If you're in Pangbourne and want a breakfast or lunch, or just a coffee to go then go have a look. I'm a big fan.

It is close to the Thames near Caversham Bridge - No gorge in sight but maybe they're in it for the long run until the Thames carves out a nice canyon in a few million years. good luck to them anyway. they deserve their success. The food is good fry-up grub and small meals that you'd expect from a cafe. they also offer good value bed and breakfast as there a rooms attached to the cafe. I think prices start at £30 for a single room.
