For several years, my husband's company had their annual award banquet there. It would always start out before sunset so that we had great views. Each side of the room offers a view of downtown and beyond. Then they would have a very professional staff passing appetizers and serving cocktails, and then a fancy dinner. Another time, my husband surprised me with a show at Symphony Hall downstairs, that included drinks and desserts at the University Club upstairs. It was beautiful and indulgent. More recently, a friend had given us tickets to Sunset Sips, a monthly themed-tasting. It was Spanish-themed when we went. They had vendors set up with various Spanish wines and liquors. They even included a couple of small appetizers to set off the them. A little over a week ago, a friend invited me to a San Diego Magazine party. It was a bit less "all inclusive" as the first cocktail was included, but after that it was a cash bar. They had some passed appetizers and a cold appetizer buffet. It was beautiful as always, had a DJ and some cute games, as well as a raffle. We were able to take a few photos before sunset. I cannot comment on the University Club membership, or any of the regular dining, as I have always come for a special event in the private event room. I hope I get invited back there soon!

The renovation is lovely and you can't beat the view. They offer valet parking but there was plenty of street parking (for a small fee as the meters ended shortly after I arrived). The lobby is big and wood paneled with seating. There are people there to direct you to your destination as well. The elevators offer the floor number choices on the outside so make sure you pick the right one. When you reach the top level and walk out of the elevator you walk into the restaurant. The sun was setting and it was dimly lit. The views were gorgeous. Our event was in a separate event space. Again the views were stunning. We checked in and ventured to get a cocktail. We chose their French 75 special. While in line we were offered an ahi poke sample. It was very fresh and flavorful. There was a DJ playing a mix of music in the background. The tables had various games and puzzles on them which was a fun addition. We admired the views from different angles. There was a good sized charcuterie table in the middle. I grabbed a small plate of a variety of items. We stood at one of their stand up tables and nibbled whilst we chatted with other guests. It was a very eclectic crowd of varying ages. We spoke to Reny (director of membership) at the membership table and she told us about all the membership options. I learned a lot and looking at the upcoming calendar they host some great sounding events. They really have a lot to offer. I look forward to returning in the future.

And nothing touches this scene. Great drinks. Even better people. The kind of place where you walk in for "just one" and somehow look up three hours later wondering how you got so comfortable, so fast. Whether it's your first stop of the night or your last, you'll spend the entire time grinning like you're exactly where you're supposed to be and nowhere you're supposed to be. Pro tip: mention the name Lee at the door for free popcorn all night. (Okay, fine. The popcorn's already free. But now you've got an excuse to say Lee's name with confidence.) Get yourselves down here and plug into the energy. We're officially hooked. See you at Aero Club.

I visited with my roommate, my cousin,& his girlfriend. He went to the restroom and us girls went to ours, they're in the same hallway & you have to pass the women's restroom to get to the men's. As I was exiting the girls bathroom he walked directly past me and I trailed behind him, then all of a sudden I hear one of the girl bartenders ask him to leave because she said she saw him exit the women's restroom. She was LOUD & reactive, like she was 100% sure she saw that, she grabbed 2 of the security guards & asked to get him out because she saw him come out of the girls restroom. WHICH WAS A LIE!! It was humiliating & if she would've just ran back the cameras she would see that is absolutely NOT what happened. It was unprofessional, ridiculous,& tasteless. I get you have to be aware in these situations but she was SO WRONG in this particular instance I was appalled. Therefore if the manager or owner would like to run back tapes on January 30th around 12 am, they will see he did not exit the women's bathroom. I really hope there's some type of repercussions for type of accusation.

I realized when I got there that there's a large Vietnamese community. The church is really nice inside, it's smaller but has a nice bright interior. The priest was great, good homily too. This church has a fast pace to it and the congregation seems really tight nit. The church is unassuming from the outside. Once inside, it is rotunda-like in appearance with most of the pews pretty close to the altar. Fr. Peter does a great job of connecting with the congregation by speaking about issues that are present in society. It's super easy to follow him, because he adds humor into what he's saying. The bulletin is pretty informative also. That's one of the things that should be a no brainer. If you want people to come to your church and keep coming back, there should be announcements of activities to build a sense of community. Holy Family seems to do a good job of that! Lastly, and most importantly haha - the service is like 45-50 minutes tops. None of those marathon mass sessions that plague some other churches where everyone in the congregation is falling asleep after the first 15. Looks like I've found my new church!

However, when a bunch of my elders, whom I greatly respect, give up their Saturday gaming and agree to get their requisite whites dirty to show a bunch of hoodlums how to play, they have my attention and best effort. Those little snafus aside I was going to give this lopsided ball rolling my best go. Did you know that not only are the balls lopsided but they are weighted heavier to one side so that there will always be a curve out or in when you roll them? I didn't either but thanks to my stellar lesson I do now!! So, I roll the balls for the first time and, wow, its fun! In all of my alcohol induced glee I decided it was a great idea to take on the ultimate challenge and play the US Lawn Bowling Champion. And. I. Beat. Him. What??? Yep, the crowd went wild. I won a very nice polo shirt. Bells were rung, I, one by one, shook the hand of each of the lawn bowling club members present that day, who also happen to have a great sense of humor about these things. I was invited to watch this very same player compete in the World Championship happening in San Francisco this September. Lawn Bowling. Who knew?? I saw a daily deal for a party for 10 at the lawn bowling club and jumped on it. When we arrived on the day of the party, we were met by a handful of ... well, lawn bowling people. They were all super helpful. They helped us all pick out our "bowls" (a set of 4 lawn bowling balls that fit your hand) then we went to the field to play. They explained the rules (there are a LOT -- way more than I expected!) and then they helped us while we played. The bowls are oblong and have a weight on one side, which means you have to really think about where you are aiming. The helpers were all patient and nice, but if I had any small recommendations, it would be that they hang back after a while and just let us play without critiquing and commenting on every shot. But they were just trying to be helpful. Everyone in my group had a great time and some even signed up for a membership. There was a big discount for the membership that day ($68), but normally it is $165/yr. With a membership, you can pretty much go to play whenever you want. If you are curious about lawn bowling, you should give it a try. Call them up and see if they have any special deals or rates for a first timer who wants to try it out. It's a great way to spend a day in the lovely San Diego sun. (And the all-white clothing is only required in Sundays!)
