Hospitality workers, shift labourers and the inveterately disorganised know this fact only too well - if you end up trying to sort out dinner after the 9pm mark on a weekday you won't be able to get anything from the major supermarkets and your takeaway options will be seriously limited. That's why I appreciate the role of chains like IGA. To me, they represent the happiest compromise possible between a 24-hour convenience store and a full-blown supermarket. IGA Milton has an especially good range and boasts impressive opening hours: 6am - midnight 365 days a year (foreign readers from countries where 24-hour supermarkets are easy to find will have to excuse my excitement)! The deli here is quite gourmet, with a good selection of salamis and prosciutto as well as an array of olives. There are also some wholesome ready to eat salads and other heat-and-eat options like tortilla stacks. The nearby cheese selection showcases a well sourced selection of brie, camembert, blue and many others. I've even bought a very tasty pre-made sand crab lasagne from the refrigerated section. I suppose we have the area's high socio-economic status to thank for these epicurean touches.

My roommate laughs at me every time I say I'm popping down there for groceries and sarcastically wishes me luck getting a park, and he's not wrong. It's every man for himself when it comes to parking at this place. Horrible parking experiences aside though, this IGA is a godsend. The amount of times I've panicked when I've had nothing to take to work for lunch the next day or I've run out of milk and this place has saved me, I simply cannot count. One particular occasion I forgot it was a coworker's birthday the next day so I frantically rushed into Milton IGA at around 11pm and quickly swiped up a chocolate mud cake. It's a constant topic of conversation in my house how amazing the Baroona Road IGA's opening hours are. 6am to 12am every night; how does it get any better than that? Plus it's a TINY place, and yet I always seem to be able to find everything my heart desires. How do they manage to pack all that stuff into this tiny little space? Beats me, but they do. I prefer it to even larger supermarkets where they'd have about five hundred different brands of washing powder or mango juice because Baroona Road IGA always has what I need. For a small place, it has a ridiculously amazing selection of gourmet cheeses and healthy cooking options, plus a better range of caesar salads than I see in larger IGAs or Woolworths stores. Rather than go to Toowong's large and probably cheaper Coles, I prefer to go here. It's more convenient, and the selection is excellent. It's far better than any other chain grocery store I've experienced thus far. Everything is super easy to find whether you're in a rush or planning a larger shop. Because of Baroona Road IGA, I never go hungry. If you're a Milton/Auchenflower local, you'll find that you cherish and appreciate this IGA as much as me; if you survive the rat race of the car park out front, that is.

This Aldi isn't overly large, but it definitely caters to all. The discount supermarket was filled with brands that look similar to well known brands, positioned next to said well known brands. I was just there to kill time and picked up a couple of non food related essentials, mainly looking for skin care products which I decided to leave as I didn't want to mess with my face by using a product it's not used to. It's not a big Aldi compare to other location but it's close and convenience. All the items there if it's not cheaper, at least the same price as you shop at Coles or other main grocery stores. I wish they have more selection of vegetables and fruits. The service is good, the cashiers generally are smiling all the time. They don't have staff walking around, so if you have any questions you have to wait to tag anyone that come out from the stock room. No free grocery bag either - available for purchase, make sure to bring yours but if you don't there always boxes that you can use and that's is free. They accept Credit card but there is a fee on it - I'm not sure how many percent. I usually pay with cash or Eftpos. Free parking for up to 2 hours or if you take the bus, 175 and 174 is running very often. Stones Corner bus station is just 2 minutes walk. I love saving, if you do go check it out!

This is probably one of the larger Coles I've been into. They generally have a good selection of…read morefruit and veg, and it's usually kept well stocked. Occasionally, their prices don't make sense when compared to other grocery stores / supermarkets, which can get very frustrating. Because the store is large, the Asian section is kept reasonably well stocked, but there are some glaring omissions (shelf-stable silken tofu, for example). Generally, it is well organised, but there are times when it gets a bit confusing (sugar and flour aren't next to each other; some soy sauce is in the Asian section, but others are in the Health Food section, etc). They have a good range of tofu and, unlike Woolworths, haven't tried to make their own brand, though the range does appear to be getting a little smaller. In terms of customer service, the few times I've been unable to find a product, staff have been extremely helpful, and searched both the computer and the physical shelves. They also have self-service checkout here, which is both annoying when it's available, and frustrating when it's not. Overall, a reliable shopping experience that serves well for big shops, though it does not necessarily deliver on specialty items.

I'm happy to see Australian supermarkets taking inspiration from the UK and US. It's not quite there yet but it feels very Marks & Spencer / TESCO in terms of layout and the larger range of convenience products offered... if only there was a Whole Foods inspired salad bar! It sells plenty of ready made meals and lunch options including salads, sandwiches, wraps, curries, pastas, risottos, sushi and rice-paper rolls. This is great for me as I frequently work from home and can duck in and grab a cheap lunch. There's a large range of fruit and vegetables (organic options too) and anything I've bought from the bakery has been fresh and delicious. I'm not a coffee drinker so haven't taken advantage of their in-house barista, but I love the concept and the fact you can pre-order using Woolworth's "Coffee to Go" iPhone app. As for variety, we've done big shops, small shops and ingredient runs in our PJs and they've almost always had the products on our list. Everything is well stocked and spotless - the store manager deserves a gold star! I've heard a few local residents complain about the prices being higher than normal but my husband and I keep a pretty close eye on prices and haven't noticed a big difference at all.

The New Farm IGA is my local grocery store and also has a separate gourmet deli section adjoining. During the Brisbane floods last year, the IGA was one of the few supermarkets that stayed open the majority of the time until a power outage put even them out of business for the day. The staff are lovely and the turnover seems pretty slow, so you'll get to know the faces of your checkout assistants quite well. There is always a good selection of fresh fruit and vegies available, but the meat range can be limited at times. Everything is a little more expensive than you'd expect to pay at a larger store, but for the convenience of an 11pm shopping trip, a little extra cash is worth it.

Although IGA is more usually more expensive than Coles or Woolworths it is less expensive than 7 eleven. I like this store for snacks. Handy if you don't want to venture into the valley or go to the shopping centre. I like that it is open everyday, even most public holidays from 6am to 10pm. The opening times are very helpful. I wish more stores in Australia opened earlier and closed later like in this one. They use Rewardle so bring your phone or card.
