After move-out, I was notified of a $150 fine for damage to my couch. I would like to be clear that my couch was fine, it was the only "new" piece of furniture we received during move-in. I had gotten a puppy in October, but she is incredibly well-behaved and was never left unattended. The chair had been damaged by the previous owner's dog and we have proof to back that up. I called them that same day, that Tuesday, and again on Wednesday. I never received on answer on Monday/Tuesday, and on Wednesday was told that "they couldn't discuss damages over the phone," yet hadn't emailed me back. I called corporate on Wednesday, and they opened an investigation. When I checked my resident portal on Friday, the fee was gone. All but .07¢ of it. I called and talked to them about it and was told "Oh it was a mistake. They charged the wrong apartment." Like?? They send us an email stating there were pictures taken and evidence of destruction, not to mention potential legal repercussions if the fee wasn't paid by the 20th. I am not sure if this was truly a "mistake" or if this was an attempt at getting extra money out of my family. I have been excess charged before after the new management company took over. Be warned: Scion doesn't have their crap together. Also, DO NOT call their call center, they'll say they'll escalate the problem then never call you back or change anything. I'd also like to say this has nothing to do with any of the incredible staffers at the Reserve. The front desk & maintenance people are incredibly kind and are super responsive and helpful 96% of the time. It's Scion that's the issue.

When…read moreI moved in my parents and I had to clean the apartment 2 days straight due to how dirty it was. There was grease and food stains all over the kitchen walls. All the walls were scuffed up, filthy and had damage to them. There was black animal hair all in the window seals and baseboards from prior tenants. The furniture in the living room had holes and were all scratched up, which were never replaced. I received a mattress that had a huge orange/yellow stain with springs popping out of it, which did get replaced immediately. When I moved in I was never notified that I was going to be receiving another roommate. The roommate I was notified for in a month of advance texted me the day of moving in asking if I knew about the extra roommate that just walked into the apartment while she was sitting on the couch. I had no clue, turns out the extra roommate signed that day and the staff let her move in, which I was told that we were supposed to be given a 48 hour notice. I didn't even receive her name from the office. My roommate that I knew and I are both 22 and 24 years old. They moved an 18 year old into our apartment that just graduated high school. Nothing against her, but we are both done with college and this follow did not follow any of our roommate preferences. When I moved out I was charged $25 for trash. There was no trash left in the apartment. They charged me $100 for the couch which was absolutely in terrible shape when I moved in. They also charged me an outrageous price, $70, for "small" plastic blinds. Which looking up on Walmart, those blinds cost $8 a piece. I had to fight to get the trash and the couch fee removed. They never even looked at my move in slip showing what type of damages were in the apartment complex prior to moving in. Luckily I took pictures before I moved in. I am still being charged $70 for blinds which I will not being paying due to the situation below.

The apartments are made cheap and they lack fixing things when you call so they can get more money out of you when you move out. You are tied into a lease with your roommates and are held accountable if they don't make payments. If one roommates is behind on rent they will shut off the wifi for everyone no exceptions. They barely salt/snow remove in the winter so if you are looking to break an arm look no further (pictures attached). The appliances they supply you with are garbage and barely work, maintenance is so over booked they take days to come and they never fully fix the issue unless it is completely done for. They had to come relight the pilot on my water heater everyday for 2 weeks until United finally replaced it. The screens on all the windows fell out on a weekly bases. The AC united was a box on the wall that did not cool off the whole apartment even when on full, they also wouldn't replace it because they were remodeling the building after we moved out in the summer. They also started showing our apartment when we did not agree to it. They offer it as a perk to be a shown apartment for money off rent or a gift card, we got neither and still had random people in our home! The office assistants are beyond rude and hard to deal with. If you try to get out of your lease they will make you sublease or do a release. A sublease means you are still responsible if that person doesn't pay at anytime. A release means you aren't responsible but you have to pay them $200 to do this! Just another way to take your money! I have switched to Labelle and they have been nothing but helpful and accommodating. Do NOT live with United Apartments

The walls are completely white and the structure is built like cells. There are windows everywhere, which with Mount Pleasant weather causes for high heat bills almost at $300. Also during the winter, shoveling along with spreading ice on the sidewalks is not their specialty. They do this when they feel like if they do at all, you're better off doing it yourself which most of my building always did. On weekdays the grass gets cut at 9am or earlier and it's very chaotic because of all the things United does at 9am. The floors and walls are very thin so don't have your TV too loud or neighbors will come knocking. Once you start hearing all of your neighbors conversations you'll start to think twice about how loud you actually are. Get used to late nights and early mornings living here. Worst place ever, made me leave Mount Pleasant quicker than I thought.

She has been an exemplary tenant for the last year leaving her old apartment "move in ready". I know this because I helped her clean. She started to move in and the overwhelming stench covered in cinnamon oil was beyond disgusting. She proceeded to vacuum four full runs over the first floor area, the chamber of the vacuum was FULL of dander and fur, to the point I took a gallon ziplock bag to the office. I asked if they contract out the cleaning services as it was apparent this apartment had not been vacuumed in at least a year. I have an animal dander allergy and instantly broke out in a rash. Worse than that, my other daughter got nauseous and felt feverish upon immediately entering the apartment and she does not have any allergies. We rented a wet vac from Menards to clean the carpet ourselves. After cleaning this 5-600 square foot area 3-4 times the water was still grey and murky sludge, no apparent improvement. The on site manager was somewhat helpful in communicating with the owner although we had to demand to speak with her, it was not offered by the front desk staff. They offered to "deep clean again" with their own company. That was done in a Friday. When we checked on Monday it was by now apparent that this was a fungal contamination of the carpet and another deep clean (this would have been the 4th) was never going to fix this. Our preferred solution was a different and clean apartment or carpet replacement. Again this was only the 1st floor LR area, about 5-600 square feet of space. The owner never communicated with us directly, only through the on site manager. The owners name was never divulged even after repeated requests. He abruptly dropped my daughter from the lease with no other options offered, leaving us to struggle to find something on short notice. Our concern was not just for her and her health but for any future tenant to that apartment. I would anticipate they may have health issues, especially respiratory and any pet to that apartment may be subjected to the same. We never made demands but rather just tried to communicate our complaint and concerns. Stay away if you value your heath.

However after signing the lease, I was told that the majority of these apartments are subsidized. I was also told that there aren't people who party here and it was a "quiet community." Fast forward to one year later. I hear my neighbors screaming at each other and their children every day, feel the floor move from people's loud music, smell cigarette smoke, and have to listen to several people partying on the property while drunk and belligerent. This property also sticks passive aggressive notes in your door which claim there is a problem and that there will be a lease violation, yet they don't explain what needs to be corrected. I have had several inspections, and maintenance coming into the house without notice, though I will say they are on top of things. I will say that the apartment is spacious enough, yet it is very outdated. There is very little air flow, leaving the upstairs stagnant and hot, even when it's cold on the main level. I was told that I will have to pay more after the first year of rent, even though mine is one of the apartments in need of updates. This is frustrating because I was given the choice of moving into either an updated apartment and paying more, or moving into an outdated apartment and paying less. The property manager is friendly.

This apartment complex needs at least one camera on each building to ensure the safety of its residents. I am afraid to go out at night due to this problem. Management needs to place cameras on the buildings instead of renovating the club house, and you can't even use that for your parties. The clubhouse was supposed to be for residents having parties. The safety of its residences must be paramount instead of revocation which no one can enjoy.

Some walls had minor pen/pencil markings from our kids, and I was fully prepared to pay for repainting those walls. Instead, management charged me for repainting the entire apartment, explaining that their vendor does not paint just one wall. While I understand their vendor policy, it seems unfair that tenants are forced to cover the full cost of a complete repaint -- management could have reasonably shared that expense as part of normal turnover. On top of that, I was also billed for carpet replacement even though I documented at move-in that the carpet was already old, and for roach treatment even though we never saw a single roach during our tenancy. I disputed these charges multiple times, but management refused to adjust anything. In the end, I had to pay nearly $2,800 in move-out fees. Advice to future residents: Document everything with photos at move-in and move-out, and be aware that even minor wear and tear can result in major charges here.
