Woodlands Park is on the outskirts of Wilberforce where King Road changes its name to Sackville Road, at Grono Farm Road. Lots of native bushland around here. The park has some scrub bush land and a cricket oval. It's across the street from my parent's house. They play cricket here on a Saturday and you can sit in your car and watch the game if you like. We tried out our new boomerang from Paddy's market on the cricket oval, but you know the result. Did it swiftly sail back to my up-reached hand without me moving an inch? No it did not.
One time in the 90's I was walking one of the collies here and around the bend in a tree was a huge goanna lizard just a few feet in front of us. He must have been 10 foot long. Komodo dragon size. Bigger than any goanna I've ever seen in any zoo anywhere. Magnificent but scary. Imagine those razor teeth chompin' down on your arm.
Backed away gingerly. Didn't have cell phone cameras back then, unfortunately.
Had I not seen this goanna we risked him leaping down on us from the tree right next to the trail. The collie didn't even see the lizard. Sweet dogs the collies, but some of them are challenged in the brains department. read more
