Because me and the 12 locals that frequent this beach on even the most perfect beach day don't want you here crowding up this pristine strip of sand. I like finding a free park no matter what time I arrive, I like not lining up for the shower and I like toilet paper in my public convenience dammit. Did I mention there are no shops nearby? You have to walk a whole block and a half to buy some great coffee and food. Pretty inconvenient right? Also if you live in the Northern Suburbs it's actually as quick to get here cutting through Mona Vale road as it is to get to any other beach in Sydney. Wait, forget I said that.

If you don't live in Narrabeen DON'T bother paddling out at North Narrabeen. You won't be welcome. It's not as good as everyone says and there simply aren't enough waves to go around, it's already over crowded.

Pure classic Northern Beaches, foot blistering sand, awesome for a refined dip if you stay in between the flags, and perfect little breakers if you equipped with a board. Nice little grassy picnic area too. Bit of a trek if you're not a Northern Beaches local, but 100% worth the drive.

Newport is a suburb of Sydney, about 30 K or 20 miles north of the city center. Newport sits…read morebetween the Pacific Ocean to the east and Pittwater harbor to the west. On the inland shores of Pittwater are several marinas and small boatyards, including the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and Royal Motor Yacht Club. Newport also features many cafes and restaurants, as well as the famous Newport Arms Hotel. Plenty of parking and plenty of shops and a Coles supermarket. The ocean beach is patrolled by Newport Surf Life Saving Club, so swim between the flags as the open exposure to the Pacific can produce big waves and rough conditions. Newport Beach is a great beach, but watch out for the "shore dump" by the waves at times. For those who prefer, there is an ocean pool at the south headland, filled by the Pacific at high tides. At the north end are tide pools and you can walk around the point. The coarse sand of Newport Beach is unusually red. There is good vegetation growth behing the beach and few buildings can be seen. Crowded on weekends and school holidays, but during the week there are few beachgoers. Some other beaches in the area are more protected.

We sat at a covered concrete picnic table for awhile, enjoying the boats and birds (especially pelicans) in the brilliant blue water. We decided to stroll in the direction of the dog park, even though we didn't have a dog with us. Best decision ever! It was so much fun watching dogs cavorting on the leash-free beach with their doggy and human friends. There's also a grassy, leash-free area for non-water loving dogs and owners. The pure joy demonstrated by people and dogs playing in the water was priceless.

Waaaay up on the northern end of the Peninsula, Pittwater stretches from Mona Vale all the way up to Palm Beach, taking in secluded communities like Elvina Bay and Scotland Island. It's beautiful; there is no other word for it. A popular place to moor boats, go for a swim, kayak to the island or simply sit in the sun, Pittwater is diverse enough to offer something for everyone. Fancy a getaway? Camp at The Basin. A dog's day out? Go to the Bayview Dog Park. A drink? Newport Arms is on the water. Its sheer size dictates that there is enough land and sea for everyone. As a residential area, there are strict noise and speed limits on the waterway, particularly around the more populated southern part end. Pittwater is a lovely alternative to Sydney Harbour - less crowded, less houses on the foreshore, less busy boat ramps. More serenity, more fish, more peace. Pittwater is a perfect day out, whether you're a local or not, whether you're young or old, whether you have a boat or just dream of it while strolling along the foreshore.
