The Wonderland sculpture is prominent on 6th Ave. a short walk from Olympic Plaza. It is in front of the Bow is a crescent shaped skyscraper in Calgary. It is a groundbreaking structure that has been ranked as one of the top 10 architectural projects in the world. Wonderland is a 39-foot tall statue in the shape of a young girl's head. The bent wire sculpture was created by artist Plensa. It is meant to represent the dreams of the young people of the province. Unlike most sculptures, Wonderland has an entrance that allows visitors to view the artwork from the inside. I viewed the city from the perspective of all of those who are represented by this sculpture.

What a magnificent giant head haha!! I absolutely loved exploring the Wonderland sculpture in downtown Calgary. The massive art piece stands around 12 meters tall (39+ feet for the Americans out there lol) and made of steel - but what makes it so striking - apart from the sheer size - is the way the artist BENT THE STEEL to create the facial features! :-o This piece was created by famous Spanish sculptor Jaume Plensa, whose work can be seen in major cities all over the world, including places like London, New York, and Dubai. It's right in front of another Calgary landmark, The Bow, an extremely tall and beautifully curved skyscraper. Wonderland was completed in 2012. There are openings in the sides of the "neck" that allow you to go inside the head and explore. And walking around the outside is fun too bc the sculpture changes from every angle. The sculpture was made to represent the hopes and dreams of young Albertans and the youthful energy of the tenants of the city and it certainly captures that idea - very playful and whimsical. I love it!

You're supposed to see one side Looks like an infant, while the other side looks like an adult. It's the same designer of the egg in London.

As many of you know, I am a huge fan of public art. Whether it is a mural, sculpture, street art I just love it all. Walking around the city of Calgary I came upon this piece and had to get a closer look. This piece titled Wonderland is a sculpture by the artist Jaume Plensa and was created in 2012. It sits in front of the highest skyscraper (The Bow Building) in Western Canada and has such a unique presence. I love that this artist is dedicated to public art and sharing with people all over the world. His work can also be found in Bangkok, New York, Vancouver, Dubai, Jerusalem, Spain as well as New Jersey, California and Michigan. The sculpture changes in shape as you walk around it and through it. The artist used a mesh fabric to create it. In the evening, the sculpture is lit up creating a whole different feel. If you find yourself in Calgary, Canada be sure to stop and check this art out.

While visiting one of the most popular places in downtown Calgary, I came across the Wonderland Sculpture. The way the artist bent the wire to shape a face is impressive. I admired the sculpture from different angles and perspectives since anyone is able to walk inside the head. This fantastic art work is at the entrance of an office building and can be visited at any time free of charge.

I love this building and I love the sculpture, who wouldn't love some thing this beautiful, also how the hell did he get mad, it's just perfect... I believe the same artist also did some thing across from the Palliser hotel which is called the last spike to represent the last spike in the railroad connecting or country from coast to coast... Anyway thank you bowl building for commissioning such a gorgeous work of art. Me and my kids love it.

Seen some of Jaume Plesa's work before and I have to say this one is my favorite! Looks most beautiful at night with the lighting. Very cool that you can go inside the head. Worth the stop if you're in Calgary!..

Whoever thought: "downtown Calgary is missing a giant head" was an absolute genius! This sculpture may be baffling when you first see it, but it does the job. Your eyes are naturally drawn to it, then your feet start taking you there! With the area already surrounded by massive buildings, this giant head definitely helps draw even more attention to this beautiful intersection. With a wire build, this head creates an illusion of fragility, but out in the open, it allows you to go up to and inside it! You can finally get inside someone's head! Lol. An awesome piece of art smack-dab in the middle of the city! Doesn't get much better than than!

Calgary is swimming in public art pieces - and Family of Man (as this set of sculptures is more…read morecommonly known) was probably my fave one! Very unassuming from a distance, the statues are massive as you get close and evoke a sense of tenderness and connection. The figures loom over you at 21 feet tall but are very jolly and serene. Designed by beloved Spanish sculptor, Mario Armengol, they were originally installed as part of the British Pavilion's exhibit titled "Britain in the World," for Montreal's Expo '67. A local Calgary businessman bought them after the expo and they were given to the city in 1968. The instillation drew a lot of controversy at first bc the figures are indeed naked and anatomically correct in an abstract sort of way - and they're sitting on the site of the "board of education" though it's since been abandoned lol. But I quite like their presentation- the sculptures are faceless, raceless, and so much is left open to interpretation here that it leaves lots of space for one's own imagination. But the sense of gentle connection between the statues was unmistakable (to me anyway) and definitely something we could all use a little more of nowadays imho. One fun fact that I really loved about these sculptures is that no instructions were given on how to install the art and Calgary didn't consult the sculptor - so the staff placed them in the big circle we see today. But at the expo back in 1967, they were all separated and scattered about lol. I really think the tenderness and connection would've been lost if they had been installed any other way!

The 10 sculptures are over 20 feet tall & were installed in 1968. To me the faceless sculptures represent the connections & relationships between people. Their positions & gestures demonstrated a tenderness that exists between the figures. The interplay of the figures, creates narratives the more I studied them.

Honestly, the pictures don't do it justice. In person, it was much nicer and cleaner. Every section of the library was sparkling clean and clearly maintained well. There are 4 stories with computers, meeting rooms, tables, coffee shop, art installations, children's area, etc. They definitely made it so there are plenty of resources available for whatever you may need. The only downfall I can think of is that the library has quite a bit of drugged up people in there as well as right outside and some of them causing a scene or clearly making others uncomfortable. I understand it's a public facility but it's still a negative aspect about the library.

In 1984, Calgary City Hall was designated a national historic site because it is the only surviving regional example of the monumental civic halls erected in several Prairie cities before 1930; and its lofty clock tower, prominent round-arched entry and extensive decoration in the Romanesque Revival style made it an imposing visual symbol of community progress.

I've always imagined them talking full garbled jibberish, or things like "I says to you, I says" or a "'mornin' Sam", "'mornin' Ralph" like the coyote and sheepdog in Looney Toons. Thanks to vigilante artists that make me smile, I've often seen them with specially knitted mitts and scarves in the winter to keep them warm.
