Good Chinese Food with a Unique Bonus…read more Mr. Chen's is a solid choice if you're craving Chinese food in Tuscaloosa. I wouldn't call it exceptional, but it's consistently good, and there's a legitimate case that it may be the best Chinese restaurant in town depending on what you're looking for. The attached Chinese grocery store is what really sets it apart. It's fun to browse before or after your meal and offers a unique experience that you won't find at most local restaurants. On the food side, the Orange Chicken, General Tso's Chicken, and Mongolian Beef were all flavorful and worth ordering again. The egg roll, fried rice, crab angels, hot and sour soup, and tapioca milk tea were all enjoyable as well. My only disappointment was the hot mustard. Instead of homemade hot mustard, they only offer the standard packaged packets. It's a small detail, but homemade mustard would have been a nice touch. Overall, Mr. Chen's serves quality Chinese food in a city with relatively limited options. Between the reliable menu and the attached Asian market, it's definitely worth a visit and one of the better places in Tuscaloosa for Chinese cuisine.

The mu shu pork dish was not so congruent. It was not bad but it also was not the best meal that I've had. The service was decent where we would get served well but there was also a lack of people in the establishment. The ambiance also was just lacking overall. Overall: I think it's worth to try it but I would not rush to come here to taste it. Sizzling rice soup: 5/5, I was impressed and amazed. I definitely recommend this dish if you want a soup that is flavorful. Mu shu pork: not worth as it did not blend well together. The filling was too salty and had a lot going on, and the wrapping was out of place. Overall, not a good dish. 1/5

For years I've driven past China No 1 in Northport and never once stepped inside--until today…read more After eating there, I'm honestly scratching my head trying to solve the mystery of why it took me so long. I called in a takeout order, which is something I usually avoid. Let's be honest--takeout food often rides home like it's been trapped in a sauna. Fried food turns soggy, sauces disappear, and by the time you open the container it looks like it just survived a long trip through the Amazon rainforest. But since I ordered the Shrimp Szechuan Style with grilled vegetables, I decided to roll the dice. About ten minutes after picking it up, I got home and popped open that 21st-century "Tupperware" container--and the food was still steaming hot. Not warm... not "microwave revival" hot... I mean fresh off the stove hot. The first bite was magical. It had that love-at-first-sight feeling... or like that first date when you get butterflies down in the gizzard meeting someone special. The shrimp were fresh, the vegetables were cooked just right, and there was plenty of sauce--no dry "Sahara Desert" situation going on here. Everything was flavorful, fresh, and satisfying. This meal absolutely delivered. Now when you place your order, the lady on the phone might not be competing for any Southern hospitality awards--but she was efficient and clearly knew what she was doing because the meal was spot on. When I stopped inside, the restaurant was also very clean on this late Saturday afternoon, which is always a great sign. Maybe I've been hanging with the wrong crowd because nobody has ever mentioned China No 1 to me. Their loss. Turns out the best Chinese takeout in Northport has been hiding in plain sight for years... and the only mystery left is why I waited so long to try it. All these years of driving past this place... turns out the joke was on me!

We went in at 1 PM on a Saturday. There was no one eating in. There were several takeout orders while we were there. The server was friendly and very efficient. Service was fast. For an appetizer, we tried the Crab Rangoons. They were delicious. Then we both got Hot and Sour Soup. It lived up to the hot part (heat wise). It was so hot that it was still warm even after we had almost finished with our entrées. My sister got the Moo Goo Gai Pan and I got General Tao's Chicken. Both lunch specials came with an eggroll and pork fried rice. The fried rice was especially good. The portions were generous and the food was good. This is a small shop with several tables inside. Definitely give it a try if you are in this area.

The shrimp and mixed vegetables were spot-on--fresh, flavorful, and cooked just right. As for the "spicy" part... well, let's just say if you've been eating hot food as long as I have, you're not breaking a sweat unless there's an actual fire in your mouth. Still, delicious all the same! Now, fair warning--this isn't fine dining. Your meal comes on a plastic disposable plate, and drinks are sold by the bottle. Prices are very reasonable, but if you're hankering for a refill, you'll have to buy another bottle. So sip that water or Pepsi slowly and make it last. The dining area is spotless, the service is quick, and the staff is friendly as always. Sure, there can be a little language barrier now and then, but if this old country boy can figure it out, I promise you can too. So grab your chopsticks (or a fork, no judgment here) and swing by this clean, quiet spot next time you're in the area. China Bob's always delivers a satisfying, no-fuss meal that'll leave you smiling -- and maybe wishing it was just a little spicier.
