You cannot go wrong at this market. There's so much to eat, see, and buy. I definitely picked up a bunch of cute ornaments here. I would recommend going earlier in the day to get your shopping and exploring done and then coming back later in the night for the lights and the vibes. It gets pretty crowded at night.

This market is very popular and the crowds back this up. If you visit during the day it's slightly less crowded, and in the evening it's packed with people drinking gluhwein up until the market closes. The booths offer a variety of items, food and drinks and you'll find a lot of gluhwein options with a variety of mugs. If you purchase gluhwein there will be a pfand charge that you can get back if you return the mug. You'll be able to find ornaments, soaps, honey, crafts, decorations, toys, and more as you browse. There are some booths that have similar items, as well as some booths with unique items. It's worth looking through all of them if you're looking for gifts. The food offerings are also great, you can find sausages, spätzle, sweets, and more. It's all delicious and there are multiple booths offering these things so you can find a shorter line to make your purchases. Other than the market, the city center itself is gorgeous. If you're there at the right time you'll be able to hear the clock chime and see the animatronics in action. It's very cool to see. We walked through this area multiple days, both to shop and also just to enjoy the lively energy as we were headed to our next location.

It was cold, rainy and windy that day, but that didn't stop the crowds at the Marienplatz Market. I'm guessing it's because this one takes a bit of effort to get to, maybe? At any rate, it wasn't very crowded, so it didn't take long for us to get through the stalls, perusing crafts, food and drinks. The only form of shelter was underneath the Chinese Tower, and it was, of course, crowded that day. We were able to find a couple of seats at one of the long tables near the entrance, but we didn't stay there long. Maybe I expected too much from this one, but it wasn't as impressive as we'd hoped it would be. There weren't many stalls, and the offerings seemed to be the same as what we could get at Marienplatz. With the rain and cold, and having to slog through the mud, we didn't stay very long. We did two passes through the market itself, then briefly considered stopping at the restaurant, before making our way back out to head back to Marienplatz for lunch. I'm glad we went, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back.

There are quite a few stalls selling food, mulled wine, decorations and gift items. There is also a nice children's area with rides and play areas. It is not as busy as the markets in the city and you can enjoy a nice evening or afternoon walking around without being pushed around specially on a weekend :-)

The random wanderings led us towards Residenzplatz and Odeonsplatz, where we saw the lit up sign on the archway leading to the market situated inside Residenzplatz. It's smaller, of course - they have less space to work with, after all. But, it had the same selection of food and drink that some of the bigger Christmas Markets had, as well as a nice selection of crafts (including jewelry). The difference with this market was the section near the back dedicated to Christmas and Christmas-themed dioramas. I was fascinated by the singing moose, who told stories and sang songs (in German, of course). Best I could tell with my broken German is that he was teeing up what visitors would encounter in each of the dioramas past him. I wish I understood more German, as there were quite a few of the settings that made us quirk an eyebrow and question the goings on. We did visit this market on two different occasions, partaking in the feel of the market (I loved that it was next to the Residenz) and the stories of the dioramas.

It's located in the middle of a square of tall buildings which help shield the blustery cold and wind, and it's well laid out so you can browse all the stands. There's a good mix of shopping, entertainment, food, and of course gluhwein! While we were there, lots of local entertainers were putting on shows, including a fantastic children's choir singing holiday songs and an old man playing "O Holy Night" on his tuba. This is a beautiful little market too, with twinkling lights and lovely decor. Worth going out of your way to stop here, especially if you're into Christmas markets (and who isn't)?
