Almost nobody outside of Waltham knows about this station and only a small number of local…read moreresidents have stumbled across it at 100.1 FM. Yet this station, the radio voice of Brandeis University is a welcome relief from the slick overprogrammed junk filling the commercial airwaves. WBRS provides a bit of everything for its listeners. In the mornings there is contemporary rock music, especially some of the older punk stuff and edgy independent tunes that other stations are afraid to play. Later on a listener might hear ethnic, folk, or reggae or, perhaps some sports talk from a couple of college students. It's eclectic and creative, with an emphasis on content. While most radio stations are constrained by a tightly programmed format WBRS breaks free from these bounds. It's a reminder of how smaller stations can be more entertaining than the children of media powerhouses. Only reason it loses one star is because of its low-power transmitter.

The only time this station plays anything new or interesting is when most people are asleep, in…read morethe middle of the night. Otherwise, programming is a steady diet of re-runs. The rich vocal and choral literature is totally ignored. There is almost no edyifing commentary about the selections, other than who the performers are. During the earliest part of the day, the announcer seems to think we're interested in what the local sports teams are doing, what celebrity is celebrating a birthday, and other nonsense. She is usually followed by a over-the-top ingenue, who employs a 2 octave range to gush about everything. I can't change the station fast enough. A steady decline over the past ten years has completely lost my support.
