Wildlife and natural history are different than in California and we loved learning about it. Truly a wild frontier. Hey, Don't Mess with Texas! My husband and I went to the Witte Museum on a Saturday. There were a lot of people there but the museum handled it well and it never felt crowded. They had many exhibits mostly about nature and our natural history. When you walk in, you are greeted by a pterodactyl and two giant dinosaurs. Make sure that you go outside to see more exhibits and nature including a log cabin. There are many side rooms where you go find some hands on features which are excellent for children. Came here during spring break. Originally we intended to go to the zoo, but it was too crowded. I'm glad we ended up here. The kids loved it and I enjoyed it as well. Lots of room for the kids to enjoy outside and run around. They were fascinated with the animal exhibits. We can't wait to go again. read more

Over the years the Witte Museum has truly grown and become the most beautiful natural history museum that San Antonio has to offer. Always a good time at San Antonio's best natural history museum equivalent. Despite my kids protests, I think they enjoy coming to this place. They are very much entertained. They like the exhibits and their interactivity. We try to take advantage of the free museum days on Tuesday from (3pm - 6pm). This visit we also paid for the special Shark exhibition but which allowed guests to learn via touch, videos, and audio recordings. Our first time at the Witte and what a great time it was. There is just so much to this place - between the collections and the seasonal exhibitions, there's so much to see as our visit lasted two hours. We opted to try both exhibitions, Sharks and Surviving Space, in addition to seeing the permanent collections/exhibits. Ourselves and our little one enjoyed them all. The space exhibition as you would expect is STEM-focused with plenty of interactive displays and items to show the day-to-day of what is is to be an astronauts and the docents are there to help with plenty of useful stories and tidbits as well. The Sharks exhibition was our favorite. Didn't really know how a shark exhibit would do at a place that isn't an aquarium, but the Witte did a great job here. Plenty of massive models of multiple types of shark, both prehistoric and current as well as with many engaging, educational displays on the lifecycle of sharks and all the threats facing them. Kudos to the museum for even taking time to show videos of shark finning and how despicable that practice is. We also perused other areas of the permanent collection and I really enjoyed their fossil collections especially their massive marine fossils displayed prominently at the front of the museum. But, we found that this place just kept going! The grounds are beautiful and massive, so much you really can't enjoy it in one sitting. That won't be a problem, we will be back. I would say the Witte is a must do on any visit to San Antonio. read more

TUES-DAZE. We went on a group outing with about 12 kids on a TUESDAY during their free admission hours between the hours of 3-6pm. PACKED is an understatement because boy oh boy, the line to get in was present. A parking garage is available and it is probably easier to access on other days and hours. They have different exhibits YEAR round and although there is an additional fee, it's minimal -- I was quoted $6 for the shark exhibit that's currently being held. The museum itself is LOVELY. There were plenty of people present with their little ones, but this might be a better suited museum for parents with kiddos ages 4+. My toddlers enjoyed seeing and naming the animals, scooping our dirt to reveal fossils in the Dino den, and the play area. I would ABSOLUTELY pay to see the exhibits at the Witte Museum once they are a little older and can be engaged for longer periods of time. read more

The Witte museum was such a treat! Although it's more of a family/kids museum, my husband and I really enjoyed it! Btw, every tuesday they offer free entrance to all Bexar county residents! So awesome! Very grateful for that! The museum is a beautiful 2 story building and I absolutely love the outside area! It's lush and peaceful to just sit and enjoy or walk around. My favorite and highlight of my museum visit is a temporary exhibit of Al Rendon, a local Texan photographer that captured/photographed many icons including one of my all time favorite artists, Selena Quintanilla. It was such a wonderful and emotional surprise! It's titled "Mi cultura" and I just learned that the exhibit has been extended until May 2024. So go check it out! 02 Oct 2024 We've been members for a few years now and visit several times a year, especially when the traveling exhibits come along, as was the case today. The spiders are in town until early Jan 2025. Catch them before they're gone. The exhibit consists of hands-on and purely visual exhibits. There are several live spider exhibits behind plexiglass, complete with foliage from their natural habitats. A fun hands-on is trying to grab balls using different types of spider 'jaws'. Wasn't as easy as it looked. At the risk of sounding selfish, it was great today as there were no school groups attending. When that happens, us child-adults have no chance of hands-on experiences. Ha, ha. We had the run of the place and the proctors helped us find the live spiders in their exhibits when we couldn't find them. Some have great camouflage. Check them out before they leave the Witte. read more

This such a nice museum. I went to view the stunning fiesta exhibit and enjoyed strolling around the other exhibits. As a new Texas resident, it was fun learning about some of the history of my new home. I definitely plan to go back and spend more time with the exhibits I missed on the day I went. The Witte Museum is worth a visit if you're in the area and looking to learn. It has quite the varied space, with multiple buildings and styles of exhibits. There are spaces specifically for kids, and places that both kids and adults will enjoy. As you enter, you are greeted and immediately drawn in by the prehistoric exhibit and the dinosaurs. There is nice section of the history of the San Antonio area, a temporary exhibit space, and a large area of exhibits about Texas flora and fauna. Many of the spaces are interactive, as well, to help engage everyone. Outside, there is a nice courtyard and lawn area right next to the river as well. read more

Out of all of the "museums" in San Antonio I would consider the Witte Museum to be the most boring. If you think you're going there to see old artifacts you'll be disappointed. The dinosaur exhibit is very disappointing. It is an exhibit of plastard bones (replicas). The exhibits are mostly art created. It's more of an educational type of museum for kids with very few actual artifacts. I guess that might be good for young kids but I prefer to see the real thing also. There are a lot of taxidermy critters which may be the best part about the museum. I do have a membership here so I will go again when a new exhibit comes about. A good example is "Unseen Oceans" which opened a couple of weeks ago and is on display until May of 2026. read more

This museum has undergone major updates. I'd call it essential if you live in San Antonio and a big help towards understanding this vast, wildly diverse state if you come from anywhere else in Texas. The kids had such a good time. Delightful technological applications are everywhere and everything_works. That said, the Witte is suffering from an identity crisis. It defines itself as: "The Witte Museum inspires people to shape the future of Texas through relevant and transformative experiences in nature, science and culture. As San Antonio's most-visited museum, the Witte reaches a diverse audience of hundreds of thousands from within Bexar County and beyond." And then it displays an exhibit about Antarctic Dinosaurs. Whatever. Just go. Take the entire family. Park in their COVERED FREE PARKING. Allocate a minimum of two hours for your complete tour. read more

The Witte Museum is not only an amazing venue for events, but a wonderful museum! For years I had been coming to the Witte for special events hosted by other brands, but actually had never visited the museum part of it. It was the first weekend of the month so I decided to take advantage of Bank of America (BOA) free museum entry. In case you had never heard about that, BOA partners with museums all across the country to give their members free access. You only receive one ticket per credit card, so please keep that in mind when visiting a museum. So funny enough, I forgot my BOA credit card at home but the staff was kind enough to honor the ticket, which I thought speaks volumes about their customer service. The free entry did not cover the cost of the special exhibit, so I had to pay for that extra which was totally fine. All children 3 years and under enter for free, so thankfully I was able to get my kid in at no cost. The dinosaur exhibit is divided into two sections; the antarctic dinosaurs and the Tyrannosaurus family. Both exhibits where really nice and perfect for children. They had a good mix of information and interactive elements for the kiddos without being a gigantic sensory overload. Our favorite was definitely the Tyrannosaurus exhibit since they had this interactive screen where kids can see themselves being chased by tyrannosaurus. Overall it was a great experience and the museum was not as crowded as the children's museum down the road from them. They also have a giant outdoor space for kids to play around and enjoy the nature. I will definitely be coming back and taking advantage of Bank of America's free entry! read more

We had a nice morning exploring the Witte. It seems especially relevant for kids, though our group of adults (and on 18-year old) had a good time. I particularly enjoyed the Texas history sections, and the exhibit on Black Cowboys and Rodeo was really interesting and well-presented. I have recently become interested in early humans and dinosaurs and wanted to visit a museum with recently became both. The Witte Museum delightfully fulfilled that requirement. Parking is easily accessible and plenty. I went in December but I can tell that the grounds are pretty nice in the spring or summer. The staff was genuinely excited that it was my first time visiting. The dinosaurs greeting you upon entry is exciting. I love the sediments display. The second floor of the main entrance building tells the story of the early settlers of San Antonio. This was a pleasant visit. The museum was not too noisy given all the children there. With 2 floors of discovery, you and the family can spend a fun-filled day learning a lot about Texas' natural wonder and history! This particular visit was for the Antarctic Dinosaurs exhibit on free Tuesdays, which came to a total of $18 for 2 adults and 1 child for the exhibit which is a great deal. We all 3 really enjoyed the exhibit as it was very informative yet catered to the younger crowd. We enjoyed our visit to the Witte Museum. It was easy to navigate and very family friendly. The exhibits were educational and interesting however, my one critique is that I wish they were more extensive. We've been to several different natural science museums over the years and we really found the Witte museum underwhelming and lacking as far as far as variety. We purchased a family membership and we do plan on returning, but it was disappointing that we were able make our way through every single exhibit in an hour or two. read more

So looking at this place initially, I thought it was quite a small museum....But there is an UPSTAIRS!! Whaaaattttt?!? Now that is cool! Unfortunately we ran out of time. I appreciate museums and a lot of museums are not interactive and the displays seem to be protected behind glass where you can't take a close look at things. This place is open to look at the displays, not glass encased. There is an outdoor area where you can look at historical data on how things were made and you can see the examples. Indoors you can see dinosaur bones and there are screens with buttons to press to see different videos talking about prehistoric facts. There is a display where you can see different animals and an audio playing the noises they make and facts about the animals. Very neat! Definitely a place that I want to return to. 2 hours was not enough time. read more

3.5 This museum was crowded when we went which is a good sign as far as museums go. Be aware that parking is in a structure along the side of the museum. We almost didn't get a spot. The museum itself though is very nice for what it is. The lobby has giant dinosaurs, some ocean turtles, and fish skeletons. You can go into a section with some quails, another with turtles, and some other learning areas for the children. There is a nice section of animals that are staged together. I really liked how they depicted the water, you can look underneath to see the fish. There is a second floor above with installations depicting early inhabitants of the area. There were also some cool meteorites. If you go outside there are some buildings behind you can explore. If you keep walking there's a section for photography and a section for early settler life. You'd almost miss it if you weren't looking. There is currently an installation with dresses that are amazing. read more

The Witte Museum is one of the best family museums in San Antonio. There is so much to see, learn, try & do. From the Texas critters, to the people who settled in Texas, to the HEB Tree House, to the gardens & nature to enjoy. They even have a cafe. I'm sure we didn't see everything, but we were there for three hours, & with a three year old, you only get to see so much grown up stuff. The history is always educational. I'm glad it's not so white washed anymore. They have a giant fish exhibit right now that's quite interesting. I had no idea some of those fish get that durn big! And teeth, some fish have some gnarly teeth! We never made it upstairs. So,my daughter didn't get to see the dresses, and that's always a highlight for her. Be sure to enjoy the whole place y'all. This museum looks enticing from the outside, but once you begin exploring, you'll find yourself in empty, underutilized halls, surrounded by outdated and broken handsets, or watching videos skip and repeat. The HEB Body Adventure is potentially the worst eyesore the museum has to offer. It has been neglected and forgotten for years now. You'll find the rooftop level covered in dust and littered with empty blunt wrappers instead. The special exhibits leave so much to be desired. The clamor to appeal to all age groups leaves all desiring more. The exhibits either have big empty spaces or no "breathing" spaces at all. The exhibits are more like jungle gyms for inattentive parents and school chaperones. The staff members look exhausted and overwhelmed. To make matters worse, the Witte is controlled by its donors. You can forget about finding any such culture behind its doors. It's all very curated and digestible. If you've ever taken a peek at the "Trail Drivers Gallery," you'll know what I mean. read more

Museums contain a plethora of material on the present, past or distant past; educating and entertaining us. But let's face it, some are subjectively boring while others can be exhilarating. Can it be fun for the whole family? It depends on the diversity of exhibits at the facility. So, when my kids came down to Texas, they wanted to visit a museum with more to offer than current prairie life or what existed 3 centuries ago. After a little research and the prospect of DINASOURS we settled on the Witte Museum in San Antonio. I highly suggest checking out the website first to reserve what package is right for you. Be warned though, the website is a little hard to navigate as all the features aren't clearly defined and what they entail. More on that later. Driving from Austin was relatively easy as the traffic wasn't bad at 10am on a Monday. Parking is free, conveniently located within 100 yards of the museum and somewhat of a scenic route on foot to get there. I believe they also have a lot of outdoor activities but in 105-degree weather, my girls and I were in no mood to walk on the surface of the sun so we hustled inside with the modern wonders of air conditioning. Please note Witte seems to be in a relatively safe part of town as I always am concerned about the surroundings. Once inside the imagination runs wild as a huge Pterodactyl (big dinosaur bird) hangs overhead with a CG video of them flying above. A gift shop is to the immediate left and the desk to check in is straight ahead. The attendants are very friendly and can answer any questions you may have. Although I did stump them by asking how Dinosaurs could have lived millions of years ago when in 2005, Mary Schweitzer found soft tissue, not fossilized remains. I realize they're just helping customers but I like to make people think. Back to an earlier point they were able to sort out which bundles we wanted and updated our online tickets. We chose to go to the left and explore indigenous Texas area wildlife. All sorts of models, dioramas, scenes etc. are spread out allowing crowds to move unencumbered to each exhibit. I learned a lot reading about the wildlife and honestly, I felt I was back in school making that exploding volcano "we" (or our parents) we all had for science class. There's a lot to take in and I like the plaques with info describing natural processes, animal behaviors and diet and early humans, basically anything informative you can think of, the museum has already done. Don't be afraid to mosey off the path as there are little rooms with drawers you can open to reveal lots of things including poop. Yes, they have droppings there too. The one thing I didn't understand is they had an area of for India containing clothing and airline info. I believe it might be a sponsor but it seemed sorely out of place. Finally, there are plenty of water fountains and even a small café with coffee, drinks and even portable food. We made our way back to the lobby were an allosaur was eyeballing me. Luckily, he's dead so I didn't have to protect the family from his hand sized teeth. The next stop was a small wing containing local art and dignitaries. We went through this section quickly as it wasn't very interesting to us. Now time for the main attraction! Flowing into the main "Tyrannosaurs: Meet the Family" wing was the most exciting. A clerk checks your ticket and your off to seeing all sorts of ancient lizards and birds. I'll admit this, I've watched a lot of movies but until you get in front of a mold of Tyrannosaurus Rex one can't fully appreciate how big these creatures were! We wondered around and took a lot of pictures while somewhat reading the materials that are provided. Also, fun fact they won't tell you, but these aren't actually bones rather casts made of fossilized remains. Which explains how so many places are able to make displays. After a good 15 minutes the guests are funneled through the gift some so the museum can capitalize on impulse buying. Overall, the experience was rich and rewarding; a wonderful day to spend wit the family. All the displays are interactive with models, quick reading plaques and audio to simulate "the wild." It's not a rushed experience either, you walk at your own pace and can prioritize what you want to see first. I highly suggest visiting the museum as anything to bond with the family and learn is something that lasts a lifetime. read more

Great place to beat the heat and have an educational adventure! Walking in is pretty impressive with a huge dinosaur hanging above and a grand fossil display. My kids were ready to explore. The main building is two stories. There is an interactive map at the entrance you can view on-screen or use a QR code on your phone. They have an art gallery, fossil display, educational videos, wall climb, cafe, and other various exhibits. In another building they had the HEB adventure teaching guest about the body inside and out, being active to stay healthy, and other machines relating to health. Next to the HEB adventure is the cafe and wall climb. We stayed for a few hours exploring the area. It was clean and well maintained. For a museum, I was surprised by how much it had to offer. If you are in the area, I would recommend a visit. The exhibit on display when we went was fashion, but it changes through the seasons. As a museum, the Witte has fun and entertaining exhibitions that have a little something for everyone. Their focus on history with regard to the state of Texas, is a good way to get some perspective from its early beginnings. I've come here for several occasions and it goes without saying, there's always something (fun) going on here. Their mission is to showcase the state of Texas from prehistoric times to present days. Their collection spans the spectrum of natural history through science and art, making this an really ideal destination for families and history buffs. They have a number of exhibitions that showcase cool stuff like dinosaurs to early settlers to the Alamo City. The real bread and butter is their beautiful space. They have so many different parts of the place that would work well for corporate events, wedding receptions, or even something as small as a kid's birthday party. Their dedicated outdoor areas and unique spaces from within the museum is downright impressive, their use of catering and valet parking, as well as their central location in Brackenridge Park that make it ideal for anyone in the San Antonio vicinity. Great place to bring children! My husband and I came for a little day date and from what we could tell, the kids at the museum were having a ton of fun. To be honest, though, what kid doesn't love dinosaurs? We're big kids and we really enjoyed the dinosaur exhibits! We learned a lot about Texas animals and the ancient people who lived in this area, too! It is a smaller museum but it was big enough for us to have ample enjoyment. If I had the choice, I'd come again during the week and maybe not on a weekend. It was a little busy so I felt in the way when I was trying to read the information.
