My husband and I spent a long time looking at wedding venues in the Santa Cruz/Los Gatos area. We…read moreprobably looked at more than 10 places! A lot of places weren't quite the right fit, had too many weird restrictions, or were overpriced (if your've looked at venues you know what I mean!) The Castle House and Gardens was the last place we looked at and we knew it would be the most perfect, picturesque and enchanted woodland setting for our outdoor wedding. It has lush, wild gardens that remind me of the Secret Garden. There's a beautiful redwood grove where we had our ceremony and a poolside courtyard with two outdoor fireplaces, perfect for dining and dancing, where we had the reception. It was great to have the ceremony and reception at the same place. The Castle House is a historic estate located in the Santa Cruz Mountain Community of Bonny Doon. It's bordered by beautiful redwood forests and just 10 minutes from the ocean. The family that lives there were the most gracious hosts for our event and went to extra care to make sure the grounds looked stunning on our wedding day. They own the Bonny Doon Garden Company and grow all of the flowers for their floral design business organically in their home gardens. It was really cool because my bouquets and centerpieces all came from the garden where I got married! We got so many compliments about the venue from our guests and everyone kept asking me, "How did you find this place?" I definitely recommend this place to other brides if you are looking for a unique, non-cookie cutter type venue full of natural beauty and rustic charm.

From the initial meeting, through hiccups with our caterer, and until the day-of coordination, Teresa was amazing: Helpful, friendly, knowledgeable, and assertive when she needed to be. She also did our flowers which were out of this world. The venue itself is enchanting with it's floral gardens, towering redwoods, and cozy courtyard. Our guests could not stop talking about how ours was the best wedding they have ever attended. We had a wedding of 100 people, and it was the perfect size. Count yourself very fortunate if you have the opportunity to have your event at Castle House and Gardens.

Chrissy was amazing, she was so on top of everything and so easy to work with. The students did a fantastic job as the wait staff. The food was perfect! I love that we were able to pick our favorite dishes to be served; not many venues let you do that! Price was super reasonable as well. I'm so happy I chose this venue!! Unforgettable day. Thank you Chrissy and team.

Chef Andrea, who is a professor of the culinary school, also offers a lot of options to customize the menu. For example, we wanted to incorporate chestnuts and dates into our menu. We had this Korean traditional ceremony where our parents gave us blessings with chestnuts and dates. Chef Andrea customized hors d'oeuvre to be roasted chestnut crostini. We also had desserts with them - chocolate chestnut cakes & a family-recipe date bar. It was awesome. Many people complimented our food, and it made me very happy because food is such an important factor in our lives (I am Korean and we live in NYC - food is all we care about haha). Students of culinary school prepared and served our food - it was such an honor to have those enthusiasm and joy on our big day. The venue comes with the day of coordinator - Chrissy. I can't say enough about her. She is the best. After the first meeting with her, I told my husband "I think we're in good hands". She is a seasoned professional who knows the ins and outs of the wedding. In general, it is a great venue with a great price & great staff. Highly recommend. Photo credit: @nicolejkimphotography

We've officially added this spot to our staycation list. The hotel is beautiful, very clean, and…read morethe service really stood out--every staff member we interacted with was friendly and accommodating. Front desk even let my daughter choose a cute stuffy from the treasure chest as a gift! The location is a huge plus. We were able to walk right across the street to the beach so our toddler could play in the sand, and my husband loved being able to fish off the pier nearby. The boardwalk is also within walking distance--slightly farther, but still very manageable--and we spent time there enjoying the rides. Definitely make time for the rooftop pool and gym--they're worth it. A couple things to note: valet is the only parking option at $50/night. It's convenient, but you'll want to grab everything you need from your car ahead of time since accessing it again can take a bit longer. The room itself was on the smaller side, but well-appointed with everything we needed. Nice touches included a small fridge stocked with complimentary soda, water, and wine, along with robes, slippers, and other thoughtful extras. There's no microwave unless you request one for an additional fee. We had breakfast at the hotel's restaurant, Low Tide, and that was the only downside. Service was lacking, and the food didn't match the high price point. I'd skip it next time. Overall, a great stay and we'd definitely come back.

Did not stay there but had a late lunch with my daughters at Low Tide. We ordered the Chicken Lollipops to share. They looked good but were cold. Not sure if they were to be hot or cold but think they would have tasted better if they were hot. They were not undercooked, just cold and gave us the feeling they were meant to be hot, but we didn't ask and should have. We were going to order the fish tacos but another table did and we didn't think they looked great so we all decided to order the burger. The burger was just bland, no flavor at all. We ended up taking most of our burgers home, but later tossed them out. I did order a margarita and it was terrible. It tasted flat and bitter, I returned it and ordered a diet coke. Overall, very disappointed. This was our pre Mother's Day lunch and although the place was nice, the kitchen failed, at least for us. They need to step it up if they want local customers, wishing we had gone elsewhere.

I recently visited this restaurant for my dad's 70th birthday party, and I was really looking…read moreforward to it. The view was gorgeous, the wine prices were reasonable, and we had a lot of my dad's old and new friends coming. My dad, a lifelong musician, was even playing with some friends in the band, so we were expecting around 60-80 guests. I'd flown in from upstate New York with one simple goal: to celebrate my dad and make some good memories. When I first arrived, I met Romero, the owner's husband. He was friendly and welcoming, and honestly, I thought the night was going to be great. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case once I encountered Anna, the owner. I went up to the bar to order a bottle of wine, and Anna completely ignored me. There were only three people at the bar, but I waited for about 15 minutes without any acknowledgment. I decided to step out for a bit, and when I came back, I tried again. This time, a lovely woman named Linda, who was busy cleaning and washing dishes, offered to help. She was sweet and professional, but needed to check with Anna for a few things. When Anna finally came over, she was polite, but it was clear she was annoyed that I even needed something. I overheard her earlier saying, "I don't do 'tude'" about someone else, which struck me as a bit ironic. Here she was, in her 50s, running her own business but acting like a teenager giving "attitude" to her guests. Anyway, she cashed me out for a $40 bottle of wine, and I paid with a $100 bill. She gave me $40 back instead of the correct change, which I let her know. She apologized in a half-hearted way and gave me another $20, which I handed back as a tip--though in hindsight, I really wish I hadn't. I took the wine and went to set up a little picnic for my dad and me. After stepping out for a moment, I came back to find that my dad had been told we couldn't eat outside food, even though it was his birthday party and the majority of our guests were all buying drinks (and food, which I discovered later) from her establishment. I was a little embarrassed since someone had told me they didn't serve food there. I apologized to Anna because I genuinely meant no disrespect and never would have brought in outside food had I known that. As the evening went on, her behavior only got worse. She was openly rude to her guests and patrons, making everyone feel uncomfortable. By the end of the night, my dad had had enough and told her exactly what he thought of her service. She responded by banning him from the place for life. As someone who works closely with hospitality teams and has thrown my fair share of events, I know firsthand the value of great service. Hospitality is about much more than just taking orders--it's about making people feel welcome, valued, and cared for. Leadership sets the emotional tone of a room, and when an owner displays open irritation toward paying guests, especially during a special occasion, the problem isn't about operations--it's about a fundamental lack of understanding of what good hospitality truly means. Anna's behavior made it clear she's not cut out for this business, and unfortunately, it robbed us of the opportunity to create the meaningful memories we came for. If she spent more time working in a place where she only had to deal with the dead (like, say, a morgue), maybe she'd be happier. I was a bit hesitant to write this review but considering she decided to argue publicly with his review I believed it was necessary to set the record straight. If you value gracious service and an environment that honors celebration rather than tolerates it, I encourage you to consider other options. Life's milestones deserve better. Do yourself a favor and save the headache. This place doesn't deserve your time or money.
