And because of it and the finesse with which she runs her B&B, it follows her lead. The B&B is on the 2nd and 3rd floors of their home. We had the 3rd floor - one bedroom, a bathroom and a sitting area - which is on a bridge overlooking the 2nd floor breakfast room, sitting room and computer. The ladder like stairs which get you up to the 3rd floor makes you feel like you are climbing into a tree house. The view from our bedroom was a tree top view over Zurich - it was beautiful. When you come down to the 2nd floor in the a.m., Beatrice has set out the most exquisite breakfast; I don't think I've ever seen anything quite as inviting. Delicious croissants, hearty rolls, strawberries (in June), cheese, meats, juice and coffee in a setting that makes you want to stay there all day. But this is Zurich so everyone gets going. Our 3rd floor bath has you astounded that a shower, sink and commode can fit into that space but fit they did but not if you are super sized. There is another bath and shower on the 2nd but I couldn't get to compare them as they were in use. We walked to some excellent restaurants within 5-10 minutes of the Villa and there is an actual forest you can walk through steps away. We found this out by taking a wrong turn and driving the walkway. The nicest man remembered enough English to set us straight. Parking is tight but city transport is everywhere; their yard is so beautiful I hope my pictures can convey the look. There is street construction going on everywhere in Zurich like any city and we're pretty sure we drove the wrong way more than once but no harm nor foul. There is a back patio where we visited with a woman from Adelaide, Australia. Hope you can experience Beatrice's charm and her charming B&B. It is Frau KK's favorite.

We needed early checkin as our flight came early and she made it possible. We were in Suite #2: 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom with fully furnished kitchen; AC including full Washing machine and dryer (in the basement)! I absolutely loved this place. Sylvia (the Mom) was amazing and extremely helpful as well. I believe they can also provide you a parking spot if you need one. The best part about this place is: (1) pharmacy at the corner (2) coop supermarket a few blocks down (train can be taken there as well) (3) so many cute/cool walking stores nearby (4) safe to be out and about ~8/9pm if you're jet lagged (5) train stops a few feet from the hotel. We were able to go around the city with so much ease and comfort knowing we wouldn't have to walk after a long day of walking. Teresa Stimac is an independent, qualified cosmetologist and esthetician there. The website had a flyer with English, so I assumed she would speak English. But when I called to make an appointment, we had to use a mix of her poor English and my poor German to communicate. Somehow we muddled through, but it wasn't pretty. I showed up early to my appointment, but Teresa was with another customer and wasn't ready to see me yet. Soon it was time for my appointment... and she still wasn't ready. 10 minutes later... and she STILL wasn't ready. :( I went up to the hotel front desk to inquire, but they told me that they had nothing to do with the beauty salon and I just had to wait. I think after about 15 minutes, Teresa finally came out with the previous customer and ushered me in. I was pretty annoyed because she could have come out earlier to set expectations and at least apologize for running late, instead of making me sit out there fretting for who knows how long. But perhaps it was difficult for her to do that, being a one-woman show. Her technique and the products she used were very good. I've had quite a few facials in my life, and this was probably one of the best. BUT, the customer service was horrible. Right after she steamed my pores open and was about to do the extraction, someone knocked on the door and she went to answer it. It appeared to be a woman who wanted to buy some product, but instead of making a quick transaction, they launched into a long conversation about which products to buy. How rude! I must have waited for like 10 or 15 minutes... which was completely unacceptable during a 90 minute facial that already started 15 minutes late. Thank goodness I wasn't on a tight schedule, or else I would have been completely late to my next appointment. By the time Teresa came back to me, my skin was already cold and dried up and tight, so the extractions became very uncomfortable. The steaming effects were long gone already. I wish the service here was better, because her massage techniques were fantastic. After my facial, she asked if I wanted to purchase any product, and normally I would have--because I loved how it felt on my skin--but I was so pissed off at that point that I didn't buy anything. This is a situation where the poor service completely ruined the experience, and I vowed never come back here again. Such a pity, because I really liked the technique and the products.

A chic and modern boutique hotel that feels like your very own beautiful loft…read more SERVICE Peter, the manager of the hotel, greeted us and I believe he was on his day off but still was busy making sure everyone in his hotel were extremely satisfied. He was tremendous and really went the extra mile to make sure we had everything we needed. He is very informative and very knowledgeable and best of all he is honest. Before he took off, he even took time to check if we needed anything and wished us well. I like his hands-on approach and determination to make sure every detail is to your liking. The herbal iced tea they provided us during check-in was delicious and much needed as we were parched from lugging our luggage around the train station. It is these little nuances and attention to detail that really makes this hotel stand out. At the end of your stay, they offer a train ticket that takes you to Zurich Airport for I believe 6 Swiss Francs. This makes the whole process that much easier as you already will have your pass ready so you can simply board the train to the airport and be off. No fuss, no hassle and that's what you can come to expect from the wonderful people working at this hotel. They really want you to feel at home in Zurich and then make sure when you're ready to leave that you are at ease the whole time. ROOM Whereas rooms we stayed in at Grindelwald and Geneva leaned more towards an old-school vibe, here, at Hotel Plattenhof, you get a soothing modern room with complete comfort. In fact, it caters to both the younger crowds but at the same time our parents loved the sleek design of the rooms. Elegant wooden floors meet stylish furniture. Something for everyone. I also liked how aesthetics combined with Swiss engineering in this room. The restroom area is separated by a partition that features an eye-catching and appealing modern turquoise or dark red honeycomb design and the sink and shower are new-age too. In the room you'll find an Xbox 360 where you can play DVDs of which they offer a complete library near the lobby. The room itself is immaculately clean and comfortable. Our rooms were located on the top floor which included its own separate door from the communal hallway. This added for extra privacy and allows the two rooms to be openly accessible without intrusion from any other hotel guests. Being on the top floor lets you enjoy the quaint city view but also the activity of a university town. From our balcony we were able to see camels being walked across the street, very unique and cool! Wi-fi worked like a charm as did the electronic adapters they provided us. In the room they also provide Swiss chocolate and complimentary water in a litre size glass bottle. AMENITIES/GROUNDS There is a very cute cafe and restaurant on the premises. The cafe is especially nice with its own garden terrace so on a sunny day in Zurich it is the place to enjoy a meal or a drink outside. At night, the restaurant is a hip and cozy spot to grab drinks and socialize. On a colder night, once you open the door to the hotel lobby you'll be greeted with the toasty warmth of their consistently monitored temperature. It is an unbelievably soothing feeling especially because it can get quite cold walking around the city at night. Also very neat is their elevator. You'll want to take a picture of the technologically advanced control panel with buttons on the tablet that look straight out of a science fiction spaceship. LOCATION Located in college town right by the University of Zurich so we felt very safe at all times. The location is perfect if you want to explore museums and theaters nearby and also the university hospital is steps away, just in case. It is also near the public transit station which in around 30 minutes you can get to Zurich Airport by taking the no. 10 streetcar. Very convenient overall and I believe it is one short ride to the train station where we were able to meet our tour guides up to Mt. Titlis. We also were able to walk into old town Zurich very quickly and from there we were able to visit Sprungli, take a riverboat tour, and check out the exotic luxury cars in town. We had a fantastic stay here at Hotel Plattenhof and would certainly come back next time we're in Zurich.

We were greeted with such great hospitality from Peter the manager and were offered refreshing drinks to start off! After a quick check-in, we were shown to the two rooms which were right next to another and even had an additional lock outside the two rooms. It is the perfect suite to share when traveling as families. The Hotel: The hotel offers 37 quiet rooms and has an Italian restaurant called Sento by the lobby. Their garden terrace is really cute, perfect place to just sit out and lounge! The rooms: The rooms were beautiful with so much natural lighting! The design of the room is very simple but very modern and chic that features a cool design. The design of the room was created with so much efficiency for extra space. They were kind enough to add an extra bed in one of the rooms to accommodate the five of us. The room has a TV and even a wii to play movies! The beds were comfortable and we had great views out to the streets of Zurich. The bathrooms were very clean that had sliding doors and all the amenities needed for toiletries. Location: Location of hotel was very convenient, it was walking distance to the train station and about a 10 minute train ride from the main train station. You can also easily take a direct train ride to the airport (they even sell tickets conveniently at the front desk!) We were able to walk into the old town very easily as it is in a college town so we felt very safe at all times. Service: Peter and his staff were so accommodating and welcoming. Service will always be a top priority when staying at hotels no matter how nice the rooms are because it is the experience that you leave with you will remember the most. We secured a hotel at Hotel Uto Kulm with the expectation that this experience would be once in a lifetime. Let's just say, that was not the case at all. We checked into our hotel and our phone did not work, we notified the front desk and the clerk just said oh, ok. At this point we were under the impression that she was going to notify management of maintenance so we could get it fixed. 3 hours later when we were trying to order room service (we had just travelled 8 hours with a 1 and 5 year old) and there was a huge snow storm, the phone still did not work. We went to the front desk and the front desk clerk said that they would move us rooms, I went back to the room to pack up everything and a clerk from the front desk then came into the room picked up the phone and said "Ma'am, your phone is working fine, you just need to dial 666". I said well Ma'am, we have completely packed up our room it would have been nice if this information was part of your check in process as we have been here for 4 hours with no access to the phone to call the restaurant and front desk and we are in the middle of a snow storm, staying in a building that is not connected to the main building. When I was at the front desk I had ordered some food because we had not eaten all day, the food was incredibly overpriced and for the price not very good at all. CHF 130 for a burger, chicken dish and 2 soda's. They then sent a very nice gentlemen to come help us move, we got into the new room and went to put the milk we had carried up the mountain away, and our FRIDGE was BROKEN!!! We called the front desk and the ONE very kind lady was very apologetic. We left the room for a 20 minute walk and came back and there were ants all over our room. I walked down to the front desk to see if they had any little ant traps or remover and they said "no, we don't have that" The rest of our stay the entire staff was so rude to us and made us feel very uncomfortable. There are no stores or anything so we were hoping to enjoy some of the drinks in the fridge, they were covered in dust and HOT! When we received our confirmation email the clerk sent us a map with directions to the parking garage in downtown Zurich. We drove 6 hours, parked at the garage and then before we got out of the car we called the front desk to confirm that this was the right parking garage and that we were going to get on the train and head up to the hotel. They confirmed it was the right parking garage, we even told then the name and on we went. Little to find out at the end of our stay this was not the right hotel. So when we checked out we showed the front desk and the manager the email traffic and they said that we were to send receipt and the clerk who sent us that email would reimburse us. We sent the receipt and they responded telling us that they would not reimburse us, please be aware this was CHF 85. I have a degree in hotel and restaurant management and I was SO disappointed in the service and experience we had here. The price of the rooms were outrageous and we were okay with that initially because of the location. Once we received the email that they were not going to reimburse us for the parking we asked very kindly for the name and email address for the owner of the hotel. We never received a response. We think it is imperative that they know of our experience so this never has to happen to anyone again. The location and the views were absolutely AMAZING!!!! But the experience was TERRIBLE .

Service was competent and relaxed, but not exactly very friendly typical for Zurich. The hospitality I enjoy at Hotel Rigiblick's restaurant, Spice, was nowhere to be found. I had burrata with tomatoes, pesto, bread and balsamico as an entrée for just CHF 16.-, great value for money, one of the evening's true highlights. But I actually came because of the desserts. The restaurant sports a dessert menu that looked quite interesting, featuring (amongst other things) two dessert variations. The strawberry dessert variation was actually quite good. I particularly enjoyed the warm strawberries served soaked in caramel and pepper corn sauce. However, they serve me a strawberry semifreddo that was still completely frozen. I'll let such an embarassing mistake slide, because the head pastry chef wasn't working that day. The chocolate dessert variation was something of a mixed bag. The chocolate ginger ice cream was simply divine, absolutely commendable! The candied ginger was, of course, a perfect match. But then another mistake happened: A relatively boring little chocolate cake was covered in ready-made chocolate topping (!), absolutely disgusting. Quite sad, because melting chocolate isn't such a big deal The fruit plate was a definite disappointment. Instead of serving a coulis or sauce made from fresh strawberries, they used a ready-made sauce from Boiron that tasted far too sweet, like a low-quality strawberry jam they'd thrown into a blender. The fruit was okay, the whole ordeal was somewhat uninspired. An easy, viable dessert, nonetheless. If one considers the fact that the kitchen's two pastry chefs have to produce over a thousand pieces of cake per week, then the desserts are in spite of the mistakes that were made quite alright. I'm giving this restaurant a relatively high score because of the value for money offered and its rather gorgeous view, particularly beautiful by Zurich's standards. One star is missing. Why? Poor hygiene! My eagle eyes spotted a young chef (or apprentice?) testing some sauce with his finger and then prodding at a piece of meat with the just-licked finger yuck! The open show kitchen is quite clean, in spite of such displays of hygienic nonchalance. For more German restaurant reviews and photos, please visit: http://www.dessertblog.ch

Hotel St. George's - Zürich…read more This small, three story boutique hotel located centrally in downtown Zürich, with accommodating staff. I walked to this hotel from "HB Train Station," when I first arrived in Zürich. I wanted to explore by foot streets of Zürich. When I walked in, I really enjoyed the lobby (I forgot to take pics ). It offers a touch of historic elegance. Lobby area also leads to their own restaurant area. Breakfast can be purchased separately at the restaurant or at the time of booking. Once the friendly front desk lady finished accommodating a guest before me, she invited me to sit at the comfortable furniture by her desk, to check in. As she assisted me to check in, at some point in our conversation, I mentioned that I forgot my universal outlet adapter. She said, "I do have one extra I can give you for 10 Swiss Francs." It was her personal one. I felt bad she was giving up hers, but I was so grateful. "Thank you for offering me one, yes I will take it. I researched that it would cost 30+ Swiss Francs at a store." It was a wonderful first impression of the friendly and welcoming staff. Once I received my key, another staff member guided me to elevator and up to my room. The room was fairly small with a small bed, and personal sink, but for solo traveler, it's perfect. (All other hotels were more expensive and further away from downtown). You do share toilet and shower with other guests. Each of the three floors, offers few toilet rooms and shower rooms. At first, I was a bit concerned since I've never stayed in hotel with this type of arrangement. But, honestly, it was not an inconvenience in any way. I never had to wait for other guests. I had a balcony that I walked out every morning and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Every night, I propped my window open, fell asleep and enjoyed waking up each morning to chirping birds.
