Very poor customer service. Delays in closing dates, very slow. Our guy was rude and disrespectful to us. My boyfriend and I were first time home buyers, and everytime we had a question we got shut down and basically called stupid. They re asked for information multiple times, and when we told them we sent it already they flipped out and blamed us for not knowing what we are doing. We have had a total of three loans from Wintrust in the last 8 years The first two worked out fine but the last one in 2023 was an ongoing disaster, This loan in 2023 was sold to MR.Cooper previously Nationstar mortgage Please check Google under the above names and you will find lawsuits for unlawfully charging processing fees and poor customer service. My first payment was made to Cooper due to Wintrust selling my loan in the first month. Do your due diligence prior to proceeding with a loan from this company. read more

Wintrust changed serivcing agents without notification to me. I had auto payments set up. When they switched servicing agents and didnt notify me the auto payments were not transferred and so my auto payments were discontinued without my approval and without notification resulting in missed payments. In spite of my specific request to waive the late fees for something entirely a result of a nonauthorized change they would not waive the late fees. Terrible customer service and unacceptable. read more

Absolutely no! My loan officer Philip Sampogna was horrible. The entire process he was not helpful, forthcoming or diligent. This is not my first home purchase so I'm very aware of the process is. Initially, I asked about the grant programs that they advertised. He originally told me one thing when I got the pre approval. Then flipped that information when I decided to make an offer on a property. That's when everything start moving kind suspicious. He told me that I needed to pay off a couple of credit cards now or do it at closing, no biggie! Then he kept trying to put my offer at a contingency with me selling my condo (my current property at the time). I explained that that was not an option and that we were going to find a property that was well below my pre approval amount to help of set my DTI. He kept coming back with all sorts of things. Requiring a letter from my student loan servicer indicting my monthly payment among. The problem was, my loan were in administrative forbearance due to an impending discharge...so no monthly payments. However before my forbearance, my payment was at $220. That wasn't acceptable. All that back and forth with the servicer and he still came back to tell me that Wintrust would estimate my payment. ??? So, what was the point in doing all of that for you to come back with this??? Ok! No biggie! Even with my student loan payments and my current DTI, I shouldn't have to pay anything at closing. My current property did not have a mortgage. The most concerning thing was I never talked or communicated with the loan processor. The officer was doing all of the back and forth...why would this be happening? Anywho, gave all of the requested documents on time with no issues. And then all of a sudden she ghosted me for 2 weeks!!! We had a closing date set but no communication leading up to that date. Then...boom! Everything blew up from there. A week before closing and he text me...not call but text me to tell me that underwriting is "restructuring" my loan and I'm now required to put down 10% as well as pay all of my credit cards off. Which would have been a cash to close for 45k! Um, what?? Well, the issue was my offer on a property was far less than my pre approval amount. My income had increased by 7,000 and my credit and DTI hadn't changed. I feel like Philip messed something up...a lot of stuff when he started this whole process. That's why he ghosted me for two weeks. Underwriting was probably asking him stuff that he couldn't produce and I do feel like he wasn't my advocate. But he shouldn't been communicating after the initial pre approval and offer letter. I should have been speaking to the processor. Anyway, I will as still able to close with another lender in a matter of 2 weeks because they messed up the loan. I can't speak for others experience but mine was the absolute worst and wouldn't recommend anyone to Wintrust especially not Philip! read more

I was trying to assist my client with having her VA loan assumed by her home purchaser, and encountered nothing but rude, inept staff at every turn. One even hung up on me after arguing with me, insisting she was not being rude with her "can't do" attitude. I have been a homeowner for more than 30 years, both private home and investment properties. I have done business with many mortgage lenders. Wintrust is by far the worst experience I have ever had. I took out a 30-year loan a condominium. I had to purchase private mortgage insurance because I did not put the minimum 20% down. Within two years, I paid off roughly half the mortgaged amount. Within three years, I paid off two-thirds of the total mortgage amount. I contacted the company to request that private mortgage be dropped, which is in line with standards. I was told that I needed to pay for an appraisal on a property despite a balance of less than a third of the original mortgage amount. Mind you that the property, located in the heart of downtown Chicago, was appraised just three years earlier. Obviously, the value of such a property had not dropped but increased from the original mortgaged amount. Yet they insisted that I pay for a new appraisal. I chose a better option for spending my money, to pay the balance off in full and be done with Wintrust. There are other issues, too numerous to share, I had with my interactions with Wintrust. Needless to say, dealing with Wintrust taught me a lesson. Never do business with a company that is not customer friendly and do the research before doing business with them. To add insult to injury, I went online as I normally do to pay off the balance of the mortgage. I could not access the account. I called the company to request the payoff amount. I was not able to do that, Rather I was directed to email or fax the payoff request. Nightmare from start to finish. Based on my experience, I would suggest to anyone to avoid Wintrust at all costs. read more

I found the process of buying a house to be a pretty miserable experience. Fortunately, we met and worked with a few people during this grueling process that made it somewhat enjoyable. And Jon Goldman from Wintrust Mortgage was one of those people. Jon did an incredible job with the actual loan process and even rushed the process along when the seller started putting some pressure on us. Jon went above and beyond what was actually required of him as well. Would you expect your Mortgage Consultant to send you cupcakes after you had a baby? Nope, but Jon did that for us. Would you expect your Mortgage Consultant to check-in via email to see how you and your new baby were doing? Nope, but Jon did that for us. Would you expect Jon to attend the bris of your new son? Nope, but Jon was there. Would you expect your mortgage consultant to attend a closing that was at least an hour from his office? Nope, but Jon did. And would you expect your Mortgage Consultant to take you out for a celebratory dinner after closing. I think you get the point... I hope we never need to hire Jon again because I'm so not a fan of moving, but am happy we found ourselves a new friend. read more

Dealing with Wintrust mortgage has caused us stress and anxiety, the underwriters seem to be clueless, they lose paperwork and keep asking for documentation and it seems that they have no intentions on approving our loan, our closing day is today and I feel like the loan still wont be approved, as a first time home buyer this has been excruciating. Wintrust could care less if you are going to be homeless, they take their time and once you give them everything they ask for , they ask for something else. My review is in line with all of the other one star reviews, we are going through the same issues so if I were you I would look elsewhere for a mortgage. NIGHTMARE IF YOU ARE TAKING OUT A SMALLER LOAN I would leave NO stars if it were an option. My husband and I are first time buyers, taking out a small loan for a townhome. We worked with an agent Glenn Zeillier who was helpful and informative until he just walked out of his job one day. Didn't pass our file along to anyone, didn't tell us he was leaving. We were unreasonably loyal and patient (naiive), we should've walked away then. We were then handed over to a Mr. Jimmy Lemus who kept us in the dark for WEEKS, delaying our closing by another week, and waits till the absolute last minute that the seller's lawyer gave us to tell us we will be denied based on the fact I was a temp for a year in my previous employment. What a JOKE. We are happy to say we are now working with an awesome team who didn't hesitate to lend to us, have our new closing date and a much better interest rate. We are so, so lucky that the sellers are being patient with us otherwise we would've lost this property. They made our homebuying experience an absolute nightmare and I highly suggest shopping around if you are buying a home for anything under 250k, because they will treat you like your money and your happiness mean jack-shit to them. I will never apply to a lender based on online reviews ever again, only personal references matter to me now. Do not trust them! read more

I can tell you right now that if Wintrust Mortgage/Veterans First got more than 1 star it's from their lazy, lying ass staff! These people will stress you out with their cons to keep your money. I'm a 100% disabled veteran, in the state of Texas. You are exempt from paying property taxes. Today is 11/04/2022. We closed on our house in August. Our first payment was the 10/01/2022. They sent the loan statement with of course the taxes included in it. I mailed them a check for the mortgage on time without the taxes. Don't you know that these cons said that they were not going to apply the money to my account because I didn't pay the taxes. Then they have the nerve to charge a late fee. Now tee-hee to them because I sent the check with a signature delivery confirmation which they signed 3 days before the payment was late!They were sent the paperwork from the county telling them that we were exempt. These incompetent as people are still trying to make us pay taxes. They all read off of the same script card and you can never speak to a supervisor because they don't have one. They don't have a fax machine, I can't wait until these rates go down so that I can get the hell away from these thieves. They really need to be investigated because they are corrupt. So Now they have transferred our va loan to another one of their companies. WTH? This is the 3rd transfer that the have done since I refused to pay them taxes that I am exempt from paying! They are the most greedy, unethical, unprofessional, incompetent bunch of liars I have ever know and that a lot coming from me who worked at a prison for 8 years. I'm also still waiting on my check that they still are holding on to like it's theirs! Skip this company and especially if you are looking for a loan company that's not full of shit! And took a hard hit on my credit because of them after dealing with a forbearance and layoff due to Covid. Absolutely the worst experience EVER! I dealt with Thomas then his manager Jimmy Lemus who did absolutely nothing for weeks! Was of absolutely no help! Now I'm two weeks passed my closing date and about to miss my second promised closing date! My file stayed on a loan processors desk for days before Thomas was notified of that person leaving! Then they decided to ask for additional information the evening before the day I was promised to be cleared!! Then they sent me a text that was among themselves complaining of me "giving them a few hour notice" when I had emailed them the day on Tuesday and had gotten no response and requested a response by 2 pm on Wednesday!!! Which they didn't even answer until Thursday! I had to hound Jimmy for a whole week before he finally gave up his bosses name and number and after I threatened to call corporate. I got the manager Connie and someone at corporate named David involved who were slightly more helpful but still couldn't get their staff to get their things together to close on the date they assured me they'd be able to close by. Not very good, some loan officers lack knowledge, and good customer service skills. In my experience, and in agreement with my lawyer and realtor, it seems that they don't know what they are doing. I just found a new place in Chicago and was referred to Michael Black and his team. Right out of the gate there was definitely a salesy, sort of assumed close attitude that I was receiving. I looked past it and continued with questions, costs, products etc but was quickly handed off to one of Mikes colleagues. Ok, weird that no real relationship seems to be built, but still fine. I made it known to all parties at the beginning that I was rate sensitive and shopping/quoting with other lenders in my own best interest (pretty common practice today in all things purchased). Mikes team (or I should say, Meaghan) was outstanding, helpful, courteous, and never made me feel in a hurry. When it came time to rate lock I received calls from a couple lenders that day and locked with Mike only to switch an hour later with a much lower cost ($700/800 savings a year) and still reputable lender. As I told Mikes team, this would be a nasty shock and as someone in sales who's been through this verbal commit, then change of heart routine it's definitely tough. I expected more of Mike though who called and berated and demeaned me for switching lenders. I also got a call from the branch manager who apologized for his behavior and offered to match the better rate I received. Absolutely NOT! If you could have done a better rate then I should have been offered that to begin with, very dishonest practice. I sent a thoughtful email to Mike and team and never heard anything back. Leads me to believe that you're just a number in his mind, sign the line and move on. Bottom line, reputable institution, but definitely does a lot of business and takes a hardball approach to profit and get numbers in the door. Team was good, but really disappointed in unprofessional ending. Do yourself a favor and rate shop, there are plenty of services to help find a product/lender that work for you. One of the reasons so many people aren't getting new homes these days is that they think they might not be able to qualify or don't want to deal with the headache of getting a mortgage. David Kasprisin and Kerry Baldwin worked through this last process seamlessly.
