The entire visit with the doctor lasted less than five minutes. I was then sent for blood work. Even though I had fasted beforehand just in case, I was told the specific test had to be completed before a certain time, so I had to schedule another appointment. When I returned for my second appointment after making another 30-minute drive, I was informed that the phlebotomist wasn't there, so I couldn't even have my blood drawn. After two disappointing visits, I decided not to return to this office. To make matters worse, I later received a bill for an additional $73. I spent over six months trying to get someone to explain why I owed more money after already paying my copay. I called weekly, left countless messages, and never received a return call. Because no one would respond, the balance was eventually sent to collections. I paid the balance just to deal with the collections issue, then disputed the charge with my bank because even they agreed the situation seemed unusual. Despite that, I am still being billed for the same charge. Once again, I spent months trying to get answers with no response. When I finally reached someone, I was essentially told that if I didn't pay, it would simply be sent to collections again. No one could actually explain why I owed the money. I no longer have the insurance I had at the time of my visit, and I was also told the doctor I originally saw doesn't even work there anymore. The lack of communication and patient care at this office is unacceptable. Ignoring patients for months while continuing to bill them and threaten collections is not how a medical practice should operate. If they put even half as much effort into helping their patients as they do collecting money, this situation could have been resolved long ago. I will never return and would not recommend this office to anyone looking for a practice that values communication, professionalism, or patient care.

The staff has been there for many years and have come to know their patients very closely. Alejandra has been so helpful in my medical endeavors through these years. From insurance to pharmacy, paperwork issues, health questions, you name it. This office has become an essential part of my life. I see them at least every 3 months on a routine basis. His care has extended far beyond what I believe most people would consider the ordinary responsibilities of a physician. Dr. Choi and all of his staff have made sure I was taken care of even after hours, remained involved through multiple hospitalizations, and consistently gone above and beyond to ensure that I received the care and attention I needed. What distinguishes Dr. Choi from most physicians however, is the way he advocates for his patients. There have been times when I was physically, emotionally, or otherwise unable to advocate for myself, and he stepped into that role without hesitation. Knowing that someone was in my corner--someone who understood my history, listened to me, and genuinely cared about my well-being--made an immeasurable difference. After more than a decade as his patient, I don't view he simply as a physician. Upon first entering I noticed the office was clean and updated, the receptionist greeted me right away and got my paperwork together without having to wait. Once I finished my paperwork I was brought back within 10 minutes (amazing, that has never happened to me). The nurse took my vitals and had me wait for the Dr which only took maybe 5 minutes for her to come in. Dr. Mercado was so inviting and easy to talk to, you can tell she really cares about her patients and she never made me feel rushed. She has a way of making you feel comfortable and welcome, which is rare these days. I have had such bad experiences with doctors in the past that I tend to stay away, even when I need medical care. I was nervous coming here but now I feel so relieved. Thank you dignity health Charleston. UPDATE: I've been going to Dr. Mercado for over a year now and I almost wish I could lie and say she was bad because her awesomeness has caused more patients to come to her (which is making it take a little longer to get an appointment to see her). However, she still doesn't let that take away from her patients time and if you leave a message letting her know what's going on and that it's urgent she will still try her best to fit you in sooner. I still only wait a few minutes to be taken back and only a few minutes for her to walk in, which still amazes me to this day. Also, her medical assistant is so great as well, such a nice person! At the beginning of the year I had a really bad rash break out all over my body, I figured it was from my awful allergies and stress, she did everything she could to avoid giving me steroids when it came back again, which made me so happy because I blow up even after just one week and I just don't like taking them at all! We tried all kinds of cream until we found one that worked and she even told me to just call her if it didn't and she would send another to the pharmacy so I didn't have to come all the way to her office and pay my copay just to get another script. (LOVE!!!) I live in Henderson and her office is across town and I gladly drive all the way across town to see her, she is worth that and so much more. I wish other doctors would take a page from her book, it goes a really long way when you care about your patients.

The racial discrimination is absolutely disgusting and when I shared my health concern and asked if she could understand why I might be worried, she said, "no I don't understand." And that was it. Zero willingness to understand what the patient's needs are, and zero compassion or empathy. When I tried to explain again in a calm manner, she raised her voice and interrupted me multiple times. Very interesting since English is her second language as well.
