It was great! I stopped by to pick up some ingredients because I was cooking for a dinner party at my friend's place. I'm Singaporean living in the US, I was visiting London and wanted to make some signature Singaporean dishes. I even picked up a pandan cake that was very much like how it's made back home! They had pretty much all the ingredients I needed and I was very happy while walking around there looking at everything they had to offer. Also the roasted duck and BBQ pork in the restaurant section looked very good but I haven't tried it. Very clean supermarket with a vast selection of Asian ingredients. Enjoyed the experience. Wing Yip is the extensive Chinese supermarket. Stock up on everything from froZen dimsum to fresh fish and meat. As it caters to all the restaurants in the area goods also come in wholesale quantities. Plenty of parking. If you want to eat there's a main restaurant. Go in by the exterior entrance and tell the staff how many you are - turnaround is swift as it's something like a 200 cover place. Menu is extensive, food is great. There's also a cafe between this and the supermarket, more limited menu but just as good. read more

Wing Yip is my little slice of Heaven. It's a small pilgrimage for me, and I go every one or two months to stock up. I always set a price limit for myself, and I always break it. Having lived in Asia, it's great to find old loves and new ones among the rows and rows of aisles. My cheap large bottles of soy sauce, sticky vegetarian oyster sauce, frozen tempeh, fresh lotus root, and a case of discount TsingTao. All for me! They have a great range of frozen mock meats and I love their restaurant kitchen warehouse section as well. Steamers, bulk scrubby pads, chopping boards; I'm stocked up! In the supermarket area, but outside the tills, there are also other little shops. My fav being the knick knack shop because in the back they have books in English of Chinese lores, Buddhism and also children's books for learning Mandarin. Stop at the in-house Reindeer Cafe before shopping so you don't go in hungry! read more

If you like Chinese food and like to try your hand at cooking Chinese yourself, make your way to Wing Yip, as there is no place better to match your Chinese and oriental needs. Wing Yip is massive Chinese supermarket, with free outdoor and underground parking. It has a lift to get to the shop floor, and it has absolutely everything that an Oriental Chef would need. You can also buy Oriental Kitchen utensils like steamers and other things that they use. They also sell books on oriental cookery, toys and traditional Chinese ornaments etc. I love a Dim Sum, that's what I usually get when I am dining at a Chinese restaurant. Recently, I thought to try my hands at cooking Dim Sum my self. A trip to Wing Yip made it easy, as they have a huge frozen section to get those dumplings, Ho-Fun etc, I also bought some sweet chilli sauce. I took my frozen goods home and steamed them, and it was like having a takeaway, just healthier and cheaper. I love Chinese food, and if you do, Wing Yip is the answer to Chinese food shopping. They also have their own restaurant, where they use only what you can find in store. I had a small meal and was not impressed. I had high hopes for it but they weren't met. North Londoners can stock up on their Oriental provisions here. Buy in bulk and it works out cheaper. It must be good stuff, as the restaurants stock up from here too! VAT is charged separately, and added at check out so business buyers can claim their VAT back. There is also car parking, necessary, if you are bulk buying or just stocking up. It is a really welcoming supermarket, and in the same complex is the Wing Tai Restaurant and the Reindeer Cafe, a "Cha Chaan Teng", low-cost cafeteria-stye "tea restaurant" that are very popular in Hong Kong. Go to the restaurant for a pitstop dim sum lunch or meal, or go to the cafe for the best crispy roast duck and rice meal. Very much better than Chinatown in the West End and very generous portions. And finish off with a lovely tart, gateau or bun from the bakery within the cafe. A good idea to eat before you shop, as there is so much to tantalise you in the supermarket, and you end up buying far too much when you are hungry! read more

Lets start with the service. Not normally what you start with when you're considering a supermarket but Wing Yip is not your normal supermarket. This is somewhere where they pack your bags for you, taking so much consideration as to how you like them packed that the person on the till will sort through your lined-up items to get heavy or frozen ones swiped first so they can go at the bottom of the bag. It's a far away from 'Unexpected Item In The Bagging Area' as you can get. A great human touch. So what next after service? Decor. YES! Bright yellow with a pagoda roof and neighbouring pagoda office block. Okay, it's not very traditional Edgware Road but it adds a smile to the bleakness of Staples Corner which is just suicidal grim. The food range is incomparable for London East-Asian food. They have the lot. What more can I say. They also have everything you need to set up your own restaurant as well - cutlery, 20 gallon pots, chopping boards in packs of 20. It's pretty tempting in the final section not to just say 'fuck it! I'm going into business!' For me the best section of all is the fresh seafood counter. Lobsters, Clams, Pomfret, Crabs all at very good prices and many still alive. I can imagine this is the fall-back for many chefs who don't get to Billingsgate on time. I wish I lived closer and could swap Wing Yip for my local Tesco. Speaking of which... this is very close to where the first ever Tesco once was. How things change! read more

This is probably the best Chinese supermarket in North London. As one of the other reviewers here has stated, none of the Chinese supermarkets in the UK - including this one - can match up to the Chinese, Taiwanese, Korean ones in North America. Those really are huge - with a range to rival what you can actually get in China, Taiwan and Korea. However in comparing this Chinese supermarket to the others in the UK and North London in particular, this one is very good and I think worth five stars really. Although that doesn't mean it's by any means perfect but rather the best that is available. Despite not being as large as the North American East Asian grocery mega-stores, it is nevertheless a very large supermarket. About the size of an average Tesco. Its range of goods is... well... good. There is a fresh fish counter, which has a lot of things you can't easily get in a supermarket in the UK, such as live eel and also other live fish. There's also a good selection of shell fish and other sea fish, which is far better and fresher than in your average UK supermarket. There are also plenty of fresh vegetables and there is a large frozen section, plus canned goods, rice etc In addition to this, there is a restaurant attached to the place (too expensive for me, most of the time, but good food) and also a cafe which is more affordable and which has a Chinese bakery inside. Upstairs there are also specialist East Asian travel agents, Chinese medicine and hairdressers offering more typical East Asian styles. So, I would recommend this branch of Wing Yip for anyone in or near North London who doesn't have time to get into China Town or to another large Chinese supermarket. read more

WING YIP! You have saved me. Every little can of bean paste, every wonton I own (frozen!), every soy sauce variety I have collected in this house of mine is due to you. You massive, brightly lit with annoying neon lights, ridiculous and amazing store, you. Upon moving here from London, I was annoyed that I couldn't find the trusty East Asian groceries I had found with such ease in the states. Where the hell were the water chestnuts? Where could one find the best dumplings? Why can't anything be found in a Sainsbury's without a staff member giving you the evil eye? My husband suggested, after listening to my ranting, that we visit Wing Yip and I'm so glad we did. Everything is clearly marked with a large selection of everything you're looking for, from lemon grass to pork dumplings to fried duck to baby corn in a can. It's a little out of our way and if it is for you, make sure you stock up. The staff is reliable, making your purchases is quick and painless and you will not leave disappointed. I can't imagine an item you wouldn't find in this store - go with a big shopping list and kiss your aggravating visits to Tesco goodbye. read more

WING YIP! thats how its said 'cos everytime i mention this place, someone from behind some hiding place shouts "WING YIP!!" If you are a little like me and wondered how to cook like the best of Chinese and Oriental cooking, this is the place. There so many little gems and everything One needs for a quality Chinese meal, or even for economic reasons. The staff were helpful, and the isle are well laid out. the only problem is that it is hard to get to because its on Junction 1 of the M1 and as a pedestrian, it kinda difficult. everyone i know loves the place and its a shame i've only recently discovered that this was an actual place to shop as I had passed many a time. check it out read more

Comprehensively stocked Chinese/Oriental (Thai, Japanese, Korean etc) supermarket with wholesale section - handy if you need to bulk buy disposable food containers, cleaning products, paper carrier bags etc. I even found gypsum power (for food use and for making tofu) there today!!!! If you are looking for large bags of bicarbonate of soda, they do them at around £2.40 for 2 kilos I think. Look in the dried goods section for various flavouring powders and spices e.g. curry power, ground cumin. Since the Japanese oriental centre closed in Colindale this place has become one of the best places to buy asian food and delicacies from across East Asia. The only downside id the parking area is not big enough to contain the crowds. read more

You can find nearly everything here, from 20 kilo bags of rice (which we tend to purchase 2 or 3 at a time), to pallets of special corned beef, cooking implements, and my favorite isle, CANDY! Make sure your car is empty when you arrive, as it will be full when you leave. read more

Everyone with asian blood in them should regard Wing Yip as London's food mecca. I know for sure my Mama snorts with disgust at the piddly bags of rice at Tescos and holds out for bulk buying sacks of rice heavier than me at Wing Yip. Initially this warehouse space was aimed for wholesale so you can easily get mammoth supplies of rice, noodles and soya sauce. But Wing Yip also has every aspect of asian cooking on lock-down including Korean, Thai and Filipino (YES!) as well as some of the more exotic fruit, veg and random ingredients that can be so tricky to find. After its recent overhaul it's certainly a lot less intimidating and perfectly fills the hole that the now sadly deceased Oriental City left and the pricey Chinatown just doesn't cater to. read more

Wing Yip is a fantastic store in a warehouse. It sells all the Chinese groceries you can think of, from dumplings to soya sauce. It also sells Japanese and Thai ingredients and products too! They sell fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and snacks. Everything oriental you need is under one roof! They even sell Chinese bowls, cutlery and cooking utensils! The shop is also open to wholesale so many restaurants buy their stock from here. The Cricklewood branch has undergone a major face lift and is looking fantastic with a new pagoda style building outside. This makes it really stand out. There is also a Chinese restaurant there if you get hungry whilst shopping, and further plans for a bank and a bakery to open up soon. read more

This is my favourite Chinese Supermarket in west London, and just near Ikea just in case you fancy combining the two. Have a wonder down the aisles and buy something a bit different. There are plenty of authentic ready made sources to choose from, and all the Chinese, Thai, and Japanese ingredients that you need to be able to cook your favourite Asian dishes from scratch (inc alcohol).
