My friend and I had tickets to the live 3 course chef competition between Chef Koray and Chef Simon on Friday, June 07, 2024 from 6:30pm-9:30pm at Hudson Table - Hoboken. The event is BYOB so we could bring beer, wine or champagne to enjoy throughout the event (hard liquor is not permitted). Luckily, Wine Dad's, a Wine and Liquor (Spirits) store, was located right through the tunnel in a building known as Harlow, so I was able to pick up a bottle of wine to bring to the event. Wine Dad's has a wide selection of wine, spirits, and beer and is very organized. I purchased a bottle of Troupis Thunder Moschofilero Rose from the refrigerator. I've been wanting to stop by this wine store that is in the cut in Hoboken. It's more of a place to walk into off the street Instead of driving due to where it's located and the limited parking. Once I got inside though it was a small, quaint and bright wine store. They had a pretty good selection of wines at reasonable prices. They have a liquor selection in the back as well with some unique brands of spirits. There's also a great craft beer section as well. I've been a Hoboken resident for over a decade. I've seen businesses come and go. I'm also a small business owner in this town. I'm the type of person who has taken the same several walks sooo many times when I run errands, I'm envious of not having a driveway. Because of that, I know exactly which stores stay open til which times on which nights so I pre-plan my route. Sunday is a tricky one because liquor stores, especially, close earlier on Sunday. For the past several years I've praised Wine Dads as being open until 9pm on Sunday, since it's typically open an hour past several of their competitors. So when I planned my recent Sunday evening shopping trip, in the rain on Mother's Day, I was rather surprised to show up (umbrella and Trader Joe's bags in hand) at 8:10pm and saw they were closed. Their main signage still said 9pm so I knocked on the glass. Some hipster employee came to the door, looked at me like I was crazy and blithely stated "we're closed" and then walked away. I thought he was checking on something and it was then I realized they put up an 8.5x11 piece of paper that stated Sunday hours were now til 8pm. As I was waiting for him to return so I could ask when the recent change occurred, he walked up to me, looked at me, turned around and then SHUT ALL THE LIGHTS OFF IN MY FACE. Standing there shocked, holding my two shopping bags and an umbrella, I thought to myself, "This is the type of employee this establishment hires??" Since when is it EVER ok to just turn around and shut the lights off in your customer's face as they're standing there? Is this the next generation of small business employees? As a small business owner, do you think this is ok? All he had to do was open the door and acknowledge that the store's hours changed as of late. Act like a mature, customer service professional, not some hipster millennial douche who would rather avoid not only confrontation, but any conversation at all! I felt like I was in an episode of the Twilight Zone, as I personally could NEVER imagine EVER doing something so incredibly immature. Again, I purposely have shopped there until 9pm recently on a Sunday. Why not update the sign to say "Effective May 1, our hours have changed" and encourage the staff to communicate the same. Not just walk away and turn the lights off in front of me. I seriously cannot believe that's the best quality employee you can find, because if you want to save on cheap labor, expect to lose loyal customers with deep pockets. Next time I plan my shopping walk, I'll be sure to avoid your mediocre store. If customer service is one of the last true identifiers to impress us, you clearly have no idea what that means. Literally all he had to do was open the door and reiterate the change in policy and you could've kept a customer. Thanks to this local place I am now going back to my beers days. Every time I go there, one of the crew members helps me find a new IPA or Pale Ale that I can try. I always get great "recos" and I have been finding new local beers such as Path from Hoboken which is one of my new favorites and more. Although Wine Dads is conveniently located next to Trader Joe's in Hoboken, their follow-through on special orders and deliveries is particularly dismal. I was strung along by Jeff, the co-founder, for weeks when he told me he would special order two different hard-to-find fruit wines for me, then when he finally placed the order because he had to have a minimum order to do so (he previously lied and told me he could order by the bottle) "they delivered the wrong thing." Rather than respect my long wait up until that time and try to swap it out for the right wine, he said he would not deal with that supplier again and that I was on my own for where I found those items. Previously I had asked Diana to email me the names of the wines so I could order them elsewhere, and she said she would send it within 15 minutes. That never happened either. Then, the next day, Wine Dad's blew the delivery of the items that I had already paid for, forgetting about Diana's commitment to deliver it completely and admitting it had never left the store. My advice is to avoid these folks at all costs, but if you choose to work with them, you may soon encounter this level of lying, disrespect and mismanagement. read more

It's become a pet peeve of mine, in recent years, that many retail sales associates, when asked a question, simply respond "I don't think so," "or, no we don't have that," or "I have no idea." The clear message is I'm not here to help you, and have no interest in doing so. Gone are the days of working, within reason, to satisfy the customer, help build the business, and actually earn a wage. The correct responses should be phrases like "I'm not sure, but let me check with someone," or "I'm not familiar with that but we have a lot of items, let me check our website and POS inventory system," or "that's not my department, and I just started here, but I'll find someone to help you." So, that brings us to today's case study at Wine Dad's in Hoboken, NJ. I was going to be in the area for something else, and did a quick search of local liquor stores for a nice (read not allocated crazy) $100 bottle of Whiskey. Wine Dad's online inventory showed they had three. So, I stopped by just before noon on Saturday, September 10th. Took a quick walk through the store looking for the bottle and perusing the rest of their selection. By the time I had circled back up to the front counter, I had not found my bottle X, so I asked the two women at the front where I could find it. They both responded immediately that they did not have bottle X. Now, a lot of people would just say, "ok, thank you." and walk out at that point. However, I mentioned that their website showed it in stock and that it was a rye whiskey. Always a great experience there. Staff is knowledgeable, approachable and friendly. A jackass came in and refused to wear his mask properly, started cursing at the Wine Dads dude and being generally loud and obnoxious. The Wine Dads staff member who was helping us enforced the store's mask policy. The jackass customer had a tantrum and stormed out after we left, presumably to go home and cry. I will def return. THE most Excellent selection of beer, wine and spirits that I have found in Hoboken to date. The store is very clean and the owner is friendly and knowledgeable. I discovered Wine Dads by chance when visiting the Trader Joe's next door. It's a little difficult to find and parking is nuisance, but then again, parking anywhere in Hoboken is an adventure and a test of ones patience. I went here shortly after they opened and was very pleased. There was a good selection of alcohol and the owner was friendly. It was also reasonably-priced for the area and the decor was quite nice. Easily my favorite part of the store was that they had an on-the-spot quick cooler for your wine/spirits/beer. You could stick your purchase in this device for only 5 minutes to get it ice cold (or less time for a less intense chill). read more

I just moved to the area and was disappointed that the Trader Joe's did not have a wine shop. My disappointment was soon replaced by excitement when I realized Wine Dads was right around the corner. I tried another liquor store closer to home and couldn't find any place to park, so I decided to drive to Hoboken. So glad I did. It's worth driving an extra mile or two. Nice selection of wines, helpful and knowledgeable staff, next to Trader Joe's with free parking making it super easy to pick up dinner and wine at the same time.
