Fast forward ten years later and here we are, back at the Hummingbird Inn celebrating our 10 year engagement anniversary. In the past ten years, we have traveled far and wide, to hotels, restaurants, national parks and overseas. We had no idea what to expect about the Hummingbird Inn after being to so many places since than. Once we arrived, the Hummingbird Inn was not only just as romantic as we remember, but even better than we remember. There is just something about this place that is so serene and peaceful; the details that go into every room and feature are spectacular. This by far is the best place to rekindle the fire with that special someone. As for the location, the inn is located in a small secluded mountain town with a nearby train that passes by once a day, which added to the quaint romantic atmosphere. You can easily explore the Shenandoah and come back to enjoy a nice bottle of wine on the deck or their newly designed gazebo, built by the owners themselves. The jetted tub in the Alleghany room is still one of the nicest tubs that we have ever had. The new owners, Sandra and Jeff, have done an amazing job at maintaining and adding to this beautiful bed and breakfast. Sandra, with a hospitality background, is a very bubbly, friendly and gracious host, giving you a list of things to do in the area. Jeff, with a carpentry background, maintains everything beautifully. Each of their breakfasts were delicious and super accommodating in terms of dietary restrictions. For instance, I wanted plant based meat instead of real meat and they accommodated that request. They even acknowledged our anniversary by giving us some complimentary soap that they sold exclusively at the inn. In addition to soap, they also provide the purchase of their linens, some of the best linens that you will ever experience. We are very thankful to have returned to our little piece of heaven after all these years. Thanks to Sandra and Jeff, our piece of romantic paradise still exists to this day and has many years to go. We plan to celebrate every milestone anniversary at the Hummingbird Inn...no matter what or where life takes us.

Bathroom stocked with nice toiletries and slippers and bathrobes. Dog dishes and mats for the pooch. The lawn and planting are so beautiful. Perfect for enjoying coffee. The whole house is open for your use (but dog must stay in room). There's TV, DVDs, books to share. You can only get Verizon cell service unfortunately. I'm so glad I ended up staying at Fox Hill b&b, even though there were hotels closer to my race. Charlie and Julie acquired the place during the pandemic, and they're seriously killing it. Grounds. Absolutely gorgeous. The b&b is on a large stretch of land and there's plenty of small mown grass paths to explore and walk around. Mountains around, and of course close by to some legit hiking trails which I hope to hit in the future. Rooms. All I can say is that the pictures don't quite do them justice. Yes, they're quaint. I think I was expecting the rooms to "feel" older, but there were so many cute details, and everything looked new and very well kept. The bed and couch (where I may have watched like 2 hours of qvc) were comfy. They have a few rooms, two with kitchens. We got a kitchen room, and my parents got a non-kitchen room. Both with beautiful views of the grounds. The kitchen was well equipped, literally with everything that I needed (pots, saucepans, strainers, cutlery, bunch of different sized bowls/plates/mugs, etc.). There were also a lot of nice little touches, like drinks in the refrigerator that were gulped down immediately after the race or paw wipes for the dog. FOOD. This is the biggie. I've never ever ever have been to a more welcoming b&b. When I booked the room, about half a year in advance, Julie asked about dietary restrictions. I told her that we were vegan, and she asked me what type of milk I liked to drink (oat) and what I thought about vegan muffins/how I made them. I didn't think much about it because I figured she'd forget and we'd do what we always do - bring our milk, bring our food, just eat out of a can (sigh/lol). When we got there, they had bought oat milk, just egg, and had a recipe for vegan muffins for our breakfast. Breakfast was topnotch. A scramble of just egg with lots of veggies, vegan breakfast sausage, potatoes, delicious blueberry muffins, cup of fruit, and coffee with oat milk. Maybe redundant, but Charlie and Julie were also just good people. And there's some self selection it seems, because all other guests were friendly as well. Some other notes: - Dogs allowed in rooms, grounds, but not in main building (where the kitchen is). - There is an outdoor eating area if you're still uncomfortable eating inside (like my mom is). They had large heaters for the outdoor tables. - Check in between 4 - 7 p.m. They like to know when you get there because they set things up for your stay and like to welcome you in.

Our room didn't have that funky smell and everything was spotless. The bedspreads were a little old fashioned, but again clean and fresh. The beds were comfortable. The only hiccup was that the room next door had very noisy occupants. The rooms have a door to connect them and one of the children with them, kept trying to open our door. The whole family didn't stop making noise until after midnight. They were gone the next day and we slept quite well the second night. As some of the other reviews stated, there is a high-end hotel down the road in Hot Springs, but the Roseloe was good for our needs.

A smelly room freshener was on a shelf that I had to move outdoors. So many little things that made the room "Bates Motel" like could have been thoughtfully repaired and the room would have been comfortable instead of creepy. We had a two night reservation, left after the first night knowing we would lose the money we paid for the room because the room was just so dirty. Traveler beware. The pictures make the rooms look a 100 times better than they are.

The surrounding grounds are also a gem with a lovely patio, gardens, Mountain View's and a swing! We found our room ( the blue room) to be comfortable & well appointed . Dana and Scott added all the right touches to make for both a good nights sleep and a comfortable hangout spot to rest from a day of hiking. We've stayed in a few b & b's over the years but Heritage Hill tops our list. Dana and Scott are warm hosts, allowing us free reign of the grounds and much of the home so we could relax outside of our bedroom. Dana prepared a delicious, full breakfast to start our day. The egg soufflé was tasty and cooked to perfection. We found the location to be great, a short (maybe 15 minute) drive from southern Shenandoah NP and northern Blue Ridge Parkway. Both offering hikes and viewpoints. There are breweries, wineries, art galleries, scenic drives and museums in the area. We will definitely return to the area as there's more exploring to do --we plan to definitely stay at Heritage Hill again.
