Happy Earth Month!…read more The first ever for me was to check out Kailua's Swap Meet which was held at Aikahi Elementary School, just driving out here is so worth the stunning view to escape the hustle and besides supporting all these small and local biz how could I not. This even is huge filled with so many vendors, live entertainment, and a garage booth as well is so wonderfully organized I took advantage of their prepaid parking which proceeds go directly back to the school super cool way to support for sure and if that was sold out you could hop on the trolley from Kainalu Elementary. I was certainly so impressed with the whole event and bravo for putting it all together as you can really see how the community came together and celebrate with so much support and sounds like they may have more events like this in the future woohoo! Missed out on this one? Follow them on Instagram @kailuaswapmeet a great way to eat, chill and support local! Thank you!

I am blessed to be part of this school district! The school has a lot of rules, but they really do…read morehave your keiki's best interest at heart! Rating wise - this school is top notch, 10/10 on GreatSchools.org; 5/5 star rating on School Digger for 2012 academic year; A c+ per Honolulu Magazine for this academic year (based on surveys given to students/parents and teachers). (I can understand why teachers are not as satisfied, they are getting a lot dumped on them from all this Common Core crud - a different subject all together!) All staff are very friendly! This year is definitely a challenge with the Common Core - so it is a particularly stressful time to get the needs met for the Core standards. It does take away a lot of fun and awesome class projects with all the testing, so I give a lot more patience and understanding in what is happening in the academia world. The playground is AWESOME! The school does it's best to keep it clean but not enough students or parents seem to care about keeping it that way. At least 3 or 4 times this year the playground has had graffiti issues, sand being dumped on slides; trash all around seems to be a daily issue (not just the kids but the parents too), etc... The school staff has had to clean up the messes, or parent volunteers. Weekends seems to be even worse as glass beer bottles litter the school grounds. Lets keep the grounds clean! The PTSA does a lot for the students. They have gotten quite an amazing list of after school activities gathered for the students to participate in for the Wednesdays. They contribute a lot of goodies towards the STAR parties, and also encourage a lot of different events. The school has the unofficial 'Tuesday Mom Club' - moms/community members who jump in and volunteer doing whatever is needed by the teachers; filing, sorting, copying, laminating, cutting/pasting, etc.... Just remember to sign in & out at the front office if you decide to help out! (Highly encouraged to sign in & out, just so the school knows how many visitors are present in case of any crisis.) You can also come in and have lunch with your kid! I do believe you have to give a courtesy heads up that you will be coming so the staff can ensure you are accommodated. For military folks - they do have community outreach - a Mil 1 Source rep at the school to help out with any of your needs. If both parents work, the school has an A+ program. Parents enrolling their keikis are able to drop off students early in the morning, and keep them later in the day to help mitigate having kids by themselves at home. So there is a general synopsis of this school. Check out their web page, the PTSA's FB page! See what's going on! :)

The campus is beautiful, the faculty and staff are warm and happy to be there, and the students are overwhelmingly kind. Le Jardin is an International Baccalaureate World School that offers not only the IB Diploma Program but also the IB Primary Years Programme and the IB Middle Years Programme for its primary and middle schools. The views are incredible. The staff are great. Helpful and interested in the children's best interest ( as it should be ) and are always available to engage with the parents on their children's education. Although expensive, it's well below Punahou, 'Iolani, and Mid Pac. They do offer financial aid options, yet make sure you apply early because it can take some time to get through the process. Le Jardin does offer athletics as well as a quality education. As a matter of fact, the girl's just won the ILH water polo championship, and the boy's won last year. Le Jardin competes in Water Polo, paddling, swimming, volleyball, basketball, tennis, kayaking and golf. They also compete in the PAC-5 in football, softball, wrestling, baseball and cross country. The gym is fantastic, a tad bit cramped, but very nice indeed. I'm proud to say that my girls will be attending Le Jardin the fall of 2013

With very few principals over the years KES has been under some great leadership and care. It has shown with the amazing students that come through as well as the teachers who are so passionate about their students, school, and teaching. The students have the best of what is available to them and the administration makes sure they are plugged in where ever necessary. KES is a big campus but small group with about 250-300 students in all and a total 'ohana environment. They really care for the children like their own and know how to make visiting families feel like they've been there forever. The teachers set goals for themselves and for the students with the principal and make sure they are on track with meeting them throughout the year. Their focus is definitely on developing the whole child. From academics to social (with friends or in clubs) and beyond the children are able to get a well rounded education, positive influences, and make lifelong memories! Once a Honu always a Honu.

The office staff is competant, friendly, professional, and seem to be all about the students. They know the students by name and they know where they are at all times. I like that anytime I come into the office, they are not only friendly, they know the answers to my questions. This doesn't matter who I am speaking with. It's the same across the board. The school grounds are always clean and free of liter. The teachers are friendly, engaging, inviting, and are always encouraging the students. We had some concerns with our daughter and her teacher had the same concerns. She knew we were worried and took it upon herself to keep us updated. Ms. Jamie is also an amazing staff member on the campus. I wish I had a Ms. Jamie when I was younger. She is a positive role model for the students and sets them in the right direction. She is stern and loveable and treats the students as they were her own. I love this school and the after school programs they offer the students. These programs include ukelele, hula, origami, cartoon drawing, etc. This school is a great school and we are happy to be part of the family of ELES.

Mrs Maeda and Mrs. Burger was the best because they didn't tolerate bullying and did the best to make sure my child got home safely. If your kid is local, and I mean born and raised here amongst other local families.. they will not like it. Military kids, rich bratty kids. My kid was one of five local kids in the whole school that was local with with black hair. The graduation ceremony needs improvement. They have the parents sit on the side while the whole school sits in front of the ceremony. Is this graduation for kindergarteners through 5th graders or is it for the 6th graders and their families?! My son was physically abused by a teacher's aid ( pulled by his ear across the room ) and it was witnessed by a student. She also hid my students pencil box which was later found by another student in the aide's desk. It was reported and "investigated" but it was the end of the school year. We got a letter a year later reading that the investigation was done but no results listed and she's was still working there the year after. She's normally an aide for a special needs children but was used as an aide for my son's class (not special needs). I hate to think what she does to special needs children who can't speak up for themselves. I didn't take it further since my child has already graduated and moved on to a different school but would have handed out flyers to parents warning them of this aide. I know this issue should be a rating should be for the Windward complex but feel that it should be noted here. COVID was hard on everyone including teachers but my son's teacher "didn't know how to use computers" so it was extra hard on parents. A+ leaders were good and attentive. It was great having the Kailua carnival there but it never returned. And I know this goes for most parents but the school really needs to send some paperwork to parents teaching them how to do common core math so we can help our children with their homework instead of just saying "let them work through it and if they're confused they can ask their teacher for help" Office workers are ok but health aide ms k. Need to be kinder to students especially during A+ 2 stars because it was a mixed bag with some really bad experiences.
