Interesting trivia- The thing that looks like a yellow fire hydrant in the parking lot is a capped geyser. An ordinary fate for an extraordinary natural feature.

We ended up leaving part way through to find dinner, and upon returning there was no parking anywhere, even on the street. This is a great problem to have, I think, because it proved the turnout and support of a community this dedicated, even in a small space. Regardless, we ended up parking 7 blocks down and walking, which proved to be a challenge once the event was over and was dark with no street lights. Overall quite the venue, and such a great asset to the City of Sebastopol!

Another member whom I'd never met before, confronted me aggressively in the locker room--loud, intimidating, invasive, and completely unprovoked. But the real shock was the YMCA's response: almost nothing. Weeks passed before any meaningful action was taken, and even then it was a token gesture, not a solution. What makes this worse is learning that the same member targeted another Asian-American woman only weeks before me. Still, the YMCA brushed everything aside as if it wasn't serious. This is not about drama. It's about the YMCA failing to protect women in their facility. The lack of accountability and the dismissive attitude from leadership were honestly far more traumatizing than the incident itself. If you're considering joining--especially if you're a woman or a person of color--please read this as a warning.

I have taken part in numerous events at the Caspar Community Center. It's a fabulous multi-use…read morebuilding with a lot of charm! They have great monthly events there, like Pub Night, and their English Country Dances with local band Take A Dance. But it's also an amazing location to rent for personal use (weddings, birthday parties, and more!) The space is big and open, with handicap accessibility around the back side of the building. There is ample parking outside and now an electric car charging station. The playground equipment out back is a welcome addition too. Indoors, there is a great dance hall that has a nice stage with drapery and pretty good acoustics; Caspar boasts a separate dining hall and a huge, gorgeous kitchen... my favorite part is the bank of gorgeous windows overlooking the meadow outside. It's the perfect spot for placing your sweetheart table during a wedding dinner... or even for having your wedding reception in! (A wedding I was at this spring used that set up and it was fabulous!) The one thing about Caspar is that it books up fast and well in advance. So make sure you contact the office and book early if you want to use this lovely space!

My objections were overcome when the likeable staff, the flexible meeting space and the free parking on the weekend changed my mind. The space offers a scenic view to the courtyard fountain that featured blue tiles and splashing water. This is a lovely setting with windows and skylights all around. We did a site inspection and the contact person bent over backwards to assist us. He answered our questions and let us poke around behind the stage. We went into the full kitchen and inspected for cleanliness. It looked good. The restrooms were clean but a little dated. There are plenty of tables and chairs to accommodate weddings, or conferences. On event day, we were able to enter a bit earlier and leave a little later. As we left we observed the staff mopping and washing the tabletops. The space if very clean, spacious and has friendly, low key staff.

Field trips include the Police Station, a visit from the Fire Department and hands-on wonderful science experiences some of which include planting as well as watching the metamorphosis of butterflies. As a grandma, I was aware of the joy and excitement my grandson would exude the day of school. Thank you to Kathy and Lisa for making our community experience so memorable. The Community Center at District 56 in Elk Grove is the newest addition in the City of Elk Grove…read more It has its parking lot at the Civic Center Dr entrance, or you can also park your car at the Elk Grove Aquatic Center parking at the Big Horn Blvd entrance. The new Community Center is enormous, and the landscaping is beautiful. You can set up your event here or just come to a relaxing. It is currently open from 9 am to 6 pm Monday to Friday only. Saturday and Sunday are closed. The cafe next to the main entrance has outdoor seating. You can enjoy a cup of coffee or some snacks there. This is a lovely area to visit when you're in Elk Grove.
