I've been taking my pets to Windham Animal Hospital for over 20 years. In the early years the care was fine for routine physicals and vaccine, but then my 13 year old Jack Russel stopped eating. After two vet visits, X-ray and ultrasound they gave me medications to treat the infection he had. I understand the need to work up for a confirming diagnosis, what I don't understand is the calls I made to them for follow-up that took over three days and numerous calls from me for refills and additional direction. They just called me today, 3 days after I called for a refill by then my dog had died. The night of his passing I called them at 8:30 pm to speak to someone about his condition and pain but they don't even have a vet on call. Basically, if your pet gets sick don't rely on them to care or give follow up. read more

Being new to the area and with three pets we were in search of a new vet. WAH came recommended but I am wondering why? From the beginning they treated me like they were doing us a favor for accepting us a clients. Understanding current COVID restrictions we knew we would not be able to accompany our pets into the building. I explained it would be the first time for our puppy to be at a vet without me/us and that she would Lilly be nervous as we had not been able to socialize her after our move (mid COVID). After the exam they came out for the follow up - "she seemed nervous the entire time" duh didn't I just explain all the changes and current situation? Wanted o give them another try, thinking this might just be a one off with COVID stress. I called to make the appointment (anal glands expressed) and explained that she is uncomfortable and anxious when that area is touched. I arrived at the appointed time. When they asked if I had any concerned I reiterated my concerns (wanting my puppy to not fear going to the vet) They asked if I had given her any medication to calm her - this was the first it was mentioned ever! I explained that this was the first it was suggested. They tried the exam and procedure- only to come out 5 minutes later because the puppy was anxious. They wondered if I could give the dog meds and come back in a couple of hours? Seriously? I had to take time off for this failed attempt and didn't have an entire day free. I realize the restrictions are out of their control, however, they are fully responsible for the level of care they provide. Knowing that animals can not be accompanied by the humans they depend on and have had around more frequently it is the further responsibility of they practice to help these animals have the best possible healthcare experience. This is not the case here. Thankfully we have found a new vet that is more concerned about the animals and they care. read more

We have been going to Windham Animal Hospital for 6 years for grooming and veterinary care. Ali in grooming is absolutely amazing. Our dog is in love with her because she makes him feel so good. Love knowing that he is safe and under professional care. He comes bounding out looking great and smells amazing for a couple of weeks. For veterinary services, we have seen mostly everyone and have no complaints, but always seem to fall under Dr. Durner's care when something "big" happens. There is no doubt that she has loads of experience, as evidenced in the way she handles each situation. I really appreciate how she always builds a rapport with my dog during each visit, which is really important since he is very anxious. She is confident (not overly) and seems to always immediately have a plan, which always calms my nerves.(in our cases her plans have been really successful.) Lastly, she always calls to check in a few days later asking really detailed questions and giving more advice. It's not a routine "have to" call, but more that she actually cares that my guy is having a rough time. If you're looking for a smart, experienced, to the point, no-nonsense vet, look no further. (Giving 4/5 stars because this past time the wait was pretty long. It's not always a long wait there and I'm not upset about having to wait, as I know it's a medical facility and things happen. I called on a Thursday to make a sick appointment for my 8 month old lab and was told immediately that there was no appointments without even a care as to what was going on with my pup. I also tried to schedule an appointment for the following Monday and was told no call back on Monday and they will see if they can even get my pup in ! I was told to take my pup to the ER where the cost would be doubled! Jake is a rescue and very afraid (previous owners cut off his toe) of ANYONE going near him, especially his feet. Although he shakes when we arrive, he immediately stops as soon as Amy holds him -he loves her. She will accommodate whatever requests you have (she texts me when Jakey is done so I can pick him up, he's not there longer than an hour). I will never return to this clinic again. I stopped bringing my dog there a few years ago when I was left in an exam room for over an hour with a very anxious dog who panted herself to a body temp of 104 degrees. Due to extenuating circumstances we returned again today. We waited 50 minutes in an exam room with no one checking in to advise of a delay. Finally a doctor entered, but not the one I had specifically requested and waited to schedule an appointment with. This may be how they run their business, but I don't need to subject myself or my pet to it and neither do you. read more

This so-called animal hospital appears to be a money first - pet's welfare secondary operation. A dog was brought there in an emergency situation and treated by an overnight vet who stated that an x-ray was needed. This was after a $190.00 exam fee and labs were charged and paid for up front. Unfortunately, the x-ray cost was an additional $350.00 cost for which there were no immediate access to additional funds. However, the patient was informed to get an x-ray elsewhere if he could do so for less. At no time did this overnight vet explain that if the patient waited to get the x-ray at her facility the following day that there would be an additional cost of another exam of $190.00 plus the previously quoted $350.00 x-ray costs. Otherwise, a call would have been placed immediately to borrow the $350.00 to have the x-ray done on the initial appointment. Now the dog must suffer or die without the benefit of an x-ray because the patient was not ethically informed about all costs up front - especially about the further additional costs for declining the initial x-ray at their facility. A complete sham as a matter of opinion. Money first at this place appears to be the practice and from reading other posts!!! The front staff could care less about the dog and did not ask about it. They only cared about repeating the "policy" to charge again for another exam in less than 24 hours. No continuity of care respected. A formal complaint may be filed at the Ag's office. read more

I'm giving two stars as I've had a few good experiences here and my family and I have been clients for 12+ years but unfortunately I am going to have to take my business elsewhere for the future. I am unimpressed with the care this clinic has for its clients. I have asked repeatedly to schedule during a slower time so they were able to spend some time making my dog more comfortable. This has never been possible for the techs and vets here. I understand it is a busy practice but there is just not a high level of care provided towards my dog's emotional well being. It seems they are more concerned about getting as many dogs in and out of their doors as quickly as possible. My dog (and everyone else's too!) deserves a vet who will put in enough care to get to know their clients and take the time needed to make them as comfortable as possible while they are there. The last time I made an appointment for my dog, I didn't even end up seeing the vet with whom I actually made the appointment with! A vet who I have never met before did vaccinations for my dog and I wasn't permitted to restrain my own dog even though I have expressed that I am experienced with dogs and would be very capable of restraining my own dog. We've found a practice that is smaller and more personal that is a much better fit. I think there's just too much going on here for it to be a personal and positive experience. It's unfortunate as my family has taken our pets here for over 12 years. I also had a dog pass away 2 years ago and the techs who helped me through that were amazing. Beware! I'm convinced Dr. Laura Pearson misdiagnosed my cat from day one and had him on all kinds of worthless, useless and EXPENSIVE medicines...and at the very moment he was put down, another vet (Susan Derner) said to me ,"well, you know he had cancer." What? Never ONCE was that word mentioned with regard to my cat in all the years I brought him there! Dr. Pearson, who was my primary physician, certainly never even brought it up as a possibility! Instead, I was led to believe something else entirely. This place was recommended to me by my sister, and I found it extremely disconcerting that the first time I brought my beloved pet there, Dr. Pearson never once looked me in the face. In fact, she NEVER did, and I went to her constantly. She also never referred to me by name! I could never figure out why, perhaps she was intimidated because I'm a "hands-on" pet owner and not one to believe everything handed to me by doctors--but it didn't make for a good feeling. In the meanwhile, my cat was losing weight. Pearson determined that he needed Thyroid meds, and once his thyroid level came up, things would be fine. Well, his levels came up, but he still wasn't gaining, so she recommended a monthly B vitamin shot. Didn't help. Then she announced he was diabetic. I seriously doubted he was...but of course it meant more $$$ for syringes, and Insulin, and I put my faith in my vet. Big mistake! When he still wasn't gaining weight, despite a voracious appetite, she suggested upping the Insulin dose, which resulted in a VERY scary crash for my little pet. In the meanwhile, my lovely kitty--whom I loved dearly--was still losing weight. He went down to four pounds! I brought him in on June 9, 2016, for an emergency visit. Pearson told me he was fine but recommended an expensive x-ray. That night, at 3 AM, I woke to find him dying in my arms. I barely made it to the facility to have him put down the next morning. Pearson wasn't available, so the dour Dr. Derner rushed in, administered the shot, announced that "of course, he had cancer," and left me crying my eyes out over the corpse of my beautiful pet, a once-gorgeous Siamese. The day before, I'd bought insulin and syringes. They were never used, and Windham never offered to give me a refund and refused to do so. So, now my lovely pet is gone, and I had to give away the syringes and insulin. I would NEVER recommend this facility. Not if you love your animals. I honestly think they're in it for the money, and that's it. And I should add that when they sent me a sympathy card for the loss of my dear pet, it was NOT signed by Dr. Pearson or Dr. Derner. Considering that she "cared" for him since 2013, you'd think Pearson would have the decency to affix her signature to that cheap dollar store card they sent. But no. And that really says it all, doesn't it? While you're at it, read the review from the woman who lost her 14 year old dog to the incompetence of Windham Animal Hospital. I am sure Windham Animal Hospital is a competent facility, medically speaking. And at least one of their veterinarians is excellent--Dr. Irving Salkovitz. I have been taking my cats and dog there for treatment since we moved to Windham four years ago, and have thought seriously about moving to another veterinary practice, except for Dr. Salkovitz. The practice is not well-run. It is common to wait 45 minutes or an hour past the appointed time for the appointment to actually commence. My consistently bad luck is getting Dr. Susan Durner, who rips through an appointment in less than five minutes no matter what. On a recent appointment, for which I waited 50 minutes past the appointed time, the annual wellness visit and vaccinations lasted a total of 3:42 (that's minutes and seconds) from the time she opened the door until she left the room. And it does not help that Dr. Durner treats adult humans as if they are mentally challenged. The office staff is constantly in the weeds, overworked, understaffed, and harried. If you call the practice, you can expect to be on a lengthy hold, because they are just too busy to get to you any sooner. It is extremely unfortunate that a competent practice is diminished by a poor administration. read more

So Jack had his first vet visit ... well with me that is, and he did great! I requested Kimberlee Trahan DVM as I heard many good things about her, but she is there 2-3 times a month (she does a lot of rescue work now)! She was very helpful in conversation and very knowledgeable with all sorts of topics. The hospital is very clean and convenient in location for me. The personnel were very welcoming, and I didn't have to wait that long to get in for my appointment. Jack was a little sore the next day from the lyme shot, and I called the following morning. They were sincerely concerned with his pain and they did follow-up with me to make sure he was doing alright later in the day. Jack is such a trooper! and Windham Animal Hospital is great! Am consistently told that they are understaffed so can't make time for same day appointments- even if I call w/in 1/2 hour of them opening. Took me a year to write this. I will never come back here. Dr Salkovich is wonderful but otherwise this would get negative stars. My beloved dog had cancer and was being treated here. This was his primary care for almost 12 years. With the cancer diagnosis, they suggested I not treat and let nature take its course. I didn't listen and took him to an oncologist where he was given radiation and lived another great 9 months. When the cancer got too much we had emergency on a holiday. I called the answering service only to get someone who didn't know what a Labrador retriever was (reading from a script they asked me for the breed and had no idea). No one called me back for hours. By the time they called me back I was at an emergency clinic saying good bye to my beloved bff. Never again. read more

Our black cat, Vash, got the tip of his tail "degloved" last night when I accidentally allowed the storm door to slam too soon while letting him in (Bad Daddy! Bad!!!), so I took him to Rockingham Emergency Veterinary Hospital in Windham NH (cuz it was the only place open). $180 later (for an initial exam, a pain shot, antibiotic, and his very own Cone of Shame), I was told he had to have the tip amputated, which was gonna run me to the song of $750. I said, "Hand me that pair of scissors, I'll do it myself." They didn't think too much of that, so we took Vash home and today I called a bunch of other places (I couldn't believe the number of veterinary clinics around here) for another estimate. *Every single one* (including my own) said they couldn't give me an estimate without an exam, which was $45 to $55. To heck with it. I just took him to my own vet, Windham Animal Hospital, I hereby proclaim and I do proclaim that I am never going anywhere else. Windham Animal Hospital rocks! Dr. Salkovitz took one look at Vash and said, no problem, keep giving him the antibiotic, wait two weeks, and it will dry up and fall off. Total cost: $30. The Internet went on and on about it getting infected and the cat dying, blah, blah, blah, cuz, y'know, if it's on the Interwebs, it must be true (like the damned liberal media). I don't know why I bothered calling those other places, I should have just had faith in my own vet. There's another vet there, Dr. Pearson, who's checked out our Chihuahua, Ricky and she's excellent, also. First of all, they are very nice at WAH and the doctors appear competent. It's easy to get an appointment and convenient from Derry. My complaint is their vaccines. You have to understand there are Core and NonCore vaccines. The core vaccines are Rabies, Distemper, Parvo and Adenovirus. Rabies is legally required. Not sure if the others are legally required but if your dog gets one of these viruses, it will be in big trouble or may die. (I knew of a kitten who died of Parvo and it's an experience that agonizes me to this day.) All other vaccines are considered Non-Core (Bordetella, Hepatitis, Lyme, etc.) Anyway, the vaccines used to be on an annual schedule but they have recently developed 3 year vaccines for the Core Vaccines (Rabies, Distemper, Parvo and Adenovirus). Windham Animal Hospital only carries the 3 year vaccine for Rabies. The other vaccines are yearly vaccines. So you'll spend more money getting annual vaccines. You'll have to pay for a visit and for the vaccine three times instead of only once. I realized all of this because they did a Bordetella vaccine for my two dogs. I thought the expiration date was a mistake because it's a yearly vaccine and WAH put on their charts that it expired in 6 months. I called them about it and they told me they only give 6 months Bordetella vaccines. I called another vet in Derry who I'm considering for my permanent vet. They give 3 year Core vaccines for all of them: Rabies, Distemper, Parvo and Adenovirus. Plus their Bordetella is a one year vaccine. They also said they didn't think a 6 month Bordetella vaccine exists but that some vets put down it expires in 6 months so you'll get it again in 6 months. :( My advice is to ask them up front if they have the 3 year Core vaccines and the one year Bordetella vaccine. If not, go elsewhere, at least for your dogs shots. read more

She took blood work, got back to me with the results promptly, and has been guiding me as to the proper care of my cat who is in the early stages of kidney failure. I just want to say that after reading everyone's Yelp reviews I can honestly say that I have been a client of Windham Animal Hospital for over 18 years and have never experienced a problem with them. Have I had to wait for an appointment? Yes I have, just like most vets and doctors, they run into unforeseen issues with other pets that they cannot control. I also understand that sometimes appointments run over and maybe there is another emergency that came up that day, where maybe someone's beloved pet had an emergency, and they had to squeeze them in to be seen. All of my pets have had great care at Windham Animal Hospital and I have always been treated with kindness, even when I was distressed. So always read each review with an open mind, because these people have always been wonderful with all my fur babies. read more

We took our 15 month old yorkie, Oliver, there for his annual visit and for a presurgery visit before neutering. We received a call a couple of days after his initial visit and were told that there was a possibility that something was very, very wrong with him. The vet asked us to come for emergency blood work that day. We never received a call back with the results and had to call and speak with the hospital manager, Johh, to receive them. We were told that he needed further testing. We brought him on a Monday morning for the testing and were told we would here back in 24 to 48 hours. No one ever called us. I called them on the fourth day and was told that there was no one qualified to read the results available but that Dr Pearson would call. That was 5 hours ago and two phone calls since and nothing. The office person said the file was in front of the Dr so apparently she just doesn't care enough to call. I would not recommend them to take care of a fly. read more

I brought my 6 pound Yorkie to be groomed and they cut Nico so bad that he needed 3 staples. They admitted to him jumping around and failed to calling a second tech to help or take their time to avoid injury. Mistakes happen but this is negligent. So I get there to pick him up and I was told they will cover the vet bills for my vet. I tell them that is fin and I will not return. Nico was having paid as expected and when at my vet they were so shocked to see how he was bandaged by folding the skin over and stapling. She did not shave the fur in and around the wound or clean it thoroughly. I watched as they took the staples out shaved the fur, cleaned the wound, and stitched him back up the right way. beyond all of this when I went to address this issue they tried to user me away from the other people at the office which i refused and I was asked to leave if i did not want to go into a room with them. Dr. Pearson then followed me outside making excuses and stating she did nothing wrong. I went over exactly what she did wrong and she said that is your opinion and asked me what I wanted. i told her how about an apology to start and left. I previously shared a review regarding an incompetent vet that didn't give my sick dog proper care. This is Dr Pearson of Windham Animal Hospital, NH. I've recently learned it's even worse than I imagined. Dr Pearson is responsible for the death oh my dog. She literally killed him. First she killed him by not recognizing his congestive heart failure. Next she actually killed him by prescribing pain medication and sleeping pills. These medications are contradicted for heart conditions. The drugs Dr Pearson gave my dog increased the risk of heart failure in a dog with heart disease. I'm more outraged and offended than ever!! My dog could've lived a while longer with the right meds that control congestive heart disease. Instead Dr Pearson did him in and killed my dog with drugs known to cause heart failure. Stay clear of this horrible doctor. Save your pets life and go someplace else. FYI. She already has a complaint against her license. read more

I visited Windham Animal Hospital with both my cat and dog. I found most of the staff very friendly and helpful. I saw two of the vets there and was pleased with both Dr. Durner and Dr. Sullivan. They were very patient and seemed to care about doing the best for my pets. The reason for the "Meh, I've experienced better" rating is totally and completely due to the prices and their pharmacy policies. Being a fairly new pet owner, I was shocked to spend so much money on regular visits and even more shocked at the cost of prescriptions. My dog's first visit was $202 (which in their defense included micro-chipping) only to turn around two days later when they called to tell me that a test showed an infection - another trip to the hospital and $72.50 later, I had his medicine. My husband then found the exact same meds online for $16 with free shipping. Lesson learned. Shop around for better prices when I need a prescription. This takes us to my latest visit in which more meds were prescribed. The woman who checked me out was a bit annoyed with me for asking for a written script to take with me. The vet's total for the meds was almost $100. I returned home to find the same meds, plus some treats online for half that amount. (even with added cost of overnight shipping!) I was happy. My plan was to simply see the doctor as needed, but buy my meds online to save money. The problem with that plan is in Windham Animal Hospital's policy. Online pharmacies require prescriptions in order to ship meds. Most vets will simply okay this by phone or fax. Not Windham. After a fax, and two calls, the online pharmacy contacted me to explain that I would have to mail the actual signed copy of the script to them before they could ship. Luckily, I had already asked for these - but mailing them adds additional time to the order, leaving my dog in pain longer than necessary. Turns out my order would not be overnighted until my prescriptions could be mailed from NH to the online pharmacy in FL. The online pharmacy rep apologized several times and explained that it is very rare for a vet to refuse to okay prescriptions by phone or fax. I really believe this office is just out to make some additional money with their pharmacy and unfortunately with their policy, many pet owners have no choice but to pay their overpriced medicine costs in order to treat their animals in a timely manner. I am leaving this vet for another local vet that will allow me to use the pharmacy of my choice and will verify prescriptions by phone (and also has a five star rating for every online comment I have found for them). Hopefully this vet will reconsider their pharmacy policy and pricing. read more

I will never bring my dog to this place again! I decided to have a dental cleaning on my little chihuahua, which was the second time having this procedure done at this place. I chose an "experienced" vet who I never met before until the day of the cleaning, because another vet who saw my dog before acted as if she was afraid of a little chihuahua. I was told many times by the staff at the front that if they needed to extract any teeth that they would call me. The morning of the drop off, I met Dr. Salkovich, who was a little rude to me. I explained the problem my dog has with his shoulder and his collapsing trachea just to make sure he was aware. Since he is a vet, I figured he was going to review his chart before treating him. I received a call informing of the discharge time and nothing else. When I arrived to pick up my dog, I found that most of his teeth were taken out. Dr. Salkovich didn't even know which ones were extracted so he had to call a tech and their "reason" was because his teeth were falling loose and had some missing. This vet, didn't take the time to read his chart and learn about my dog's history which would not haven taken long to do. He told me that his teeth were so loose that they were falling. I find that hard to believe since my dog is on hard diet and never exhibited any problems eating prior to this. I was trying to prevent exactly what he did...my dog loosing his teeth due to carelessness. I am very upset. Another note, the vet was going to send my dog home without any pain medication...only antibiotic until I said something. This vet shouldn't have a license since he clearly does not care about animals and their wellbeing. This place isn't the same as it was when Dr. Connolly was there. I was referred to Dr. Salkovitz by my current vet as I was looking for acupuncture on my older dog. Upon our first visit, Dr. Salkovitz asked to watch how my dog moved. He suggested we try chiropractic care first, as we were actively working in a moderately-active sport and he thought this might have more immediate results for her. He was right. After he finished her first adjustment, I looked down at my dog and commented, "It must be my imagination, but her legs look straighter." He glanced over and said, "Yes, they are." I was astonished that he made such an immediate difference. At our second visit, he was able to loosen up more joints in her spine and the difference in her behavior and attitude was truly palpable. It was like we rolled back the clock by 3 years - she was spunky and moving so much better! She felt GOOD! Recently, a fellow competitor I'd never met before, who had seen her before the chiropractic care and then after, commented on how much better she was moving. I was so pleased that others could see what I saw - she is so positively affected by the chiropractic care she gets! I really feel like I've added so much enjoyment to her life by bringing her to Dr. Salkovitz. We continue her care and she continues to show how good she feels. At nearly 10 years old, she was the first dog in our house to leap out into the 22" pile of snow we got recently, romping like a dog a fraction of her age! I only kick myself for not finding Dr. Salkovitz sooner. The facility is always clean and bright and friendly, and even for my late-day appointments, I rarely wait 5-10 minutes. The fact they remain on schedule is impressive to me. The staff at Windham are clearly professionals who treat me and my dog with kindness and respect. I'm pleased to recommend Dr. Salkovitz and Windham Animal Hospital to anyone who asks. read more
