I suppose it's from being spoiled from all of the botanical gardens and arboretums in Western…read moreWashington but I felt like this arboretum fell a bit flat. Presentation at first where you park with a barn and garden plants starts out very promising but levels off to plainess later. The ponds on the loop we walked on have lots of pond scum, granted they could be going for a less manicured look here but the presence of water foul would clean the ponds up naturally which it was devoid of. There are sectors on the loop having plants brought from various parts of the world but nothing seemed very distinctive other than the signs indicating what the species of plant or tree was. I'm sure climate plays a big role in Western Idaho compared to Western Washington so those factors need to be considered if you are looking for an arboretum of a more dramatic type.

We love to come see the trees blossoming in spring (and the baby ducks/geese!) and then we visit again to see the colorful leaves in the fall. You can grab a walking map near the start of the trail if you like. There are two ways to access the Arb - you can park by the U of I golf course for the north entrance or by the barn on Palouse River Drive on the southern end. Dogs are not allowed on the grounds.

Coyote, a clever trickster, defeated the monster and saved the animals that had been eaten. After the monster died, Coyote cut him up and distributed his body parts throughout the land to create the different tribes. Coyote used the blood from the heart to create the Nez Perce within the Kamiah valley. The heart, liver, and ribs of the monster still remain in Kamiah valley as a testament to the story. The heart and liver are two basalt outcroppings within a relatively flat terrace along the Clearwater River. This Nez Perce story not only explains the origin of the people within the valley, but the origin of unique landforms at East Kamiah as well. This is a peaceful place to visit and to walk around. It has picnic benches and tables, and it's a great place to enjoy a sunny day. The basalt mound that comprises the heart is slowly being filled up with vegetation, so I'm not sure if the NPS site will stop it from being eroded or let nature take its course.

It isn't something I'd drive out of my way to visit but it's here and it's protected. The Nez Perce river runs next to the park. The legend is: For the Nez Perce, the story of their people begins at the 'Heart of the Monster.' A monster was eating all of the animals. Coyote fooled the monster into swallowing him. Using a set of stone knives that he had brought with him, Coyote cut apart the monster from the inside to release all of the animals that were trapped in the monster. Upon emerging from the remains of the monster, Coyote cut it up and threw the pieces all over the land, creating the Indian people who inhabit the land. Fox asked Coyote about the land around the monster, it had no people, what was he to do? As Coyote washed the blood of the monster off his hands, the drops became the Nez Perce River.
