Place is Beautiful. THATS ALL THAT WAS GOOD.No dietary restrictions, dietician does not know what that means.If you require assistance with bathing and going to bathroom,you are in wrong place.Only come if you are self reliant.Gives meds on other schedule than suppose to.Whole place lacks ability to care for a sick person. Physical therapy,social worker and nursing is a joke.I think it's a holding spot until you go to unassisted living part..Person that Initally deals with you ,tries to upset you and keeps asking if you want to move in other homes there.Sadly they are like other bad facilities read more

My stepmother was in rehab for 7 weeks after major surgery. The nur a ing staff were very attentive, knowledgeable, proactive and creative problem-solvers. The PT and OT staff did a fantastic job. Every other member of the staff was kind, friendly, professional and diligent. I would definitely recommend it. read more

My 94-year-old mom has been in independent living at Winchester Gardens (her own 2-bedroom apartment) for over two years. This is an amazing continuing care community. The residents are incredibly warm, kind and accomplished in their fields, so my mom was immediately welcomed and is now surrounded by a group of friends with whom she speaks on a daily basis. In addition to the residents, the staff is extremely high-caliber, caring and attentive. My mom stays physically, mentally and emotionally strong by participating in two exercise classes specially designed for seniors, attending fascinating lectures on a wide variety of topics (some led by residents who are distinguished in their fields!), concerts with talented live musicians, classic films, greeting card-making and flower-arranging. She found friends with common interests when she joined the gardening club and a group that meets to observe Jewish traditions on a regular basis. She was recently admitted to the sub-acute rehab within Winchester Gardens following a hospital stay, and her experience there has been excellent. It makes a world of difference to recover surrounded by her friends and with access to the activities she enjoys. Importantly, she is receiving physical, occupational and speech therapy from kind, highly qualified therapists as well as quality care from nurses, mental health professionals, dieticians and health care aides as she grows stronger each day and looks forward to moving back to her apartment in independent living. I cannot imagine a better continuing care community than Winchester Gardens. I am grateful that my mom chose to live there when she could no longer live in her house on her own. read more

i don't consider winchester gardens a place that i would do business with...they have treated my partner in a totally outrageous way: peter bolton paid a 90% refundable entrance fee of $450,000 in 2013 to rent an apartment @ $6000/month...for himself and his wife wh0 had macular degeneration and alzeimers disease... four years later she died and he had spent $800,000, his entire nest egg. he had to move out as he couldn't afford to stay. this is now almost 5-years later...they haven't refunded a penny. want more info? his email is boltonwa@aol.com read more

Update: as of Sept. 2013, Winchester Gardens is under new management, and it looks like things will be much improved there. My mom lived in their "villas" (independent living) for nearly a decade, and overall she loved it. Totally gorgeous grounds and buildings. Highly educated residents, largely Jewish (which helped my mom feel at home.) Excellent food, interesting activities, most of the staff kind and personable and responsive. There were many complaints about upper management, most of which I think will be resolved now. My main cautions -- about Winchester and any CCRC of this model -- are (a) be sure you can move into a different unit if and when you need it, and (b) be aware that if you decide to move out, you are dependent for the re-sale on the marketing department of the facility. read more

This place deserves a review that's not related to Hurricane Sandy. Yes, they did not do a very good job responding. They've had a few management changes. But they deserve a good overall review here. * Several living options, from detached independent living (with help just a call away), to apartments, to assisted living, to full care for senile/dementia cases. That's such a difficult situation to work with, but they provide the best care they can to keep the patients calm and give them the rest they need. * Food is sometimes good. The chef seems like a fairly good cook without a lot to work with - all of your basic ingredients but not much pizzazz. (Not to mention everything tends to be low-salt, but at least they have full-sugar, full-fat, etc. dining.) Today they had some chicken dish and it tasted amazing. Not just for a dining room, but legitimately amazing. That's rare. Some dishes are solid, some are not so great, but really it's not terrible food. It's above cafeteria-style for certain. Desserts can be very good, and the buffet days are always done well. * Atmosphere is 50/50. It's an old place with a lot of additions, so there are many twisty passageways and, with the varying terrain, you suddenly go from ground level to 4th floor. Not the best situation for people who are more easily confused. Not even the best situation for visitors. But it's a stately, sedate place overall, with plenty of quiet. * Service is probably the biggest drawback. Resources go to the senile/dementia ward. If you're outside that, there's a long wait from the call for help to the actual help (things like getting dressed, going to the bathroom, being taken to meals, etc.) The help itself is good enough, but the workers are only trained to do so much. I've never heard of anyone on the staff being impatient or rude, though, so they do a good job hiring. For the money that's paid, they ought to have better service though. I wonder where it all goes. * Security - never heard of a problem. Gated, though at least once I drove by and saw no one in the booth. But it's in the nice community of Maplewood so crime is low to begin with. We looked at a number of other options. My grandparents spent time in two other places (or more, when recovering from health issues), and this blows them away. It's far from perfect, but except for one isolated hurricane that's well outside the norm, it's probably the most competent assisted living facility you can find in the area. read more

I have family members at WG and I was appalled at how the post-Sandy situation was handled. WG is one of the most expensive and elite Senior Living facilities in the region, but other facilities had MUCH better contingency plans. Residents at WG were told to stay in their rooms/units. Only cold food was supplied. No information was provided to residents. My family member is still able to drive but was not aware that there were areas of the community that had power and were offering refuge to the public, such as the library, at least one large church and a number of restaurants. At a minimum, they should have had full generator backup for their kitchens and dining areas as well as for sufficient common recreation areas to be able to allow the residents to have social interaction and activities during this distressing time as well as for power to at least one electrical outlet per room for minimal lighting. I believe that this was the case in other senior facilities in the area, most of which are more modestly priced than WG. This is a scandal and should be investigated immediately. Furthermore families of residents should DEMAND that WG management improve their contingency planning and facilities to avoid EVER repeating this debacle and each resident should receive a refund of their rental or other monthly payments for this period. read more

During the recent power outage caused by Hurricane Sandy, the staff seemed woefully unprepared to address the needs of many of their residents. Visitors to the facility took photographs of dark, dangerous corridors, it was cold, meal service was apparently nothing but cold food (until the Township stepped in and set some minimum guidelines). Given the type of facility that it is, I would have expected far better from Winchester Gardens. All of a sudden a few months ago I received a solicitation for an event at Winchester Gardens, for my father. He's been dead 5 years!! I've now tried calling three (3) times to have his name removed. I left messages and even spoke with someone once - you never get an actual person. They apparently do not have their sh*t together, and purchase N/G lists to solicit and then don't follow up. Good luck with this inefficient company if you go. read more
