I entered my first marathon last year and needed a running club to train with if I was going to complete it and run any sort of decent time. I went to two different running clubs and they did not seem very friendly and welcoming. I really enjoy running in Wimbledon common and had heard about the Windmilers so I turned up for a Sunday session to see what it was like.
They had a good warm-up session and then people could split off into 3, 5 and 7 mile groups. The run through common, along the Thames and into Richmond. There are not many roads to cross so its good running in traffic free areas. Once I got fitter they have a group that go off 30 minutes earlier on a Sunday and people there all set off together and depending on whether your doing 11, 13, 15, 18 miles you take a different turning. The best part of the club is the people. They are very friendly and welcoming, most people have a cup of tea at the tea shop afterwards and a chat. One a Tuesday and Thursday they have training sessions from 7pm which are well coached and very beneficial. There is also a Saturday track session.
On the social front they organise a lot of social events, summer bbq, Xmas party, as well as hosting a 10km race where everyone mucks in to help with the smooth running. I would recommend this club to anyone in that area of London. Your free to come along and give it a try and membership costs about the same as a weekly train ticket. read more
