Because the rubber and the leather were both still intact, he was able to reattach them. A relatively simple job, but one that required the skills and materials of a Master Shoe and Boot Cobbler. I love L.L.Bean, but they only offer the *possibility* of repairing Bean boots and it would take anywhere from 3-8 weeks to get them back. George looked my boots over and assessed the repair in under ten minutes (while I stood at his counter in stocking feet!) I appreciate and respect his policy that "custom work requires custom pricing." In other words, don't hesitate to ask for an estimate so that you're not surprised! George won't be unkind or embarrass you if you decide you need to consider the cost of a repair. I dropped one star only because I called twice to ask if my boots were done.

The quality of work has diminished quite a bit recently and I'm not sure why. The last time I…read morevisited, the owner was very aggressive with me because I couldn't find my ticket. His extreme anger was really mystifying. He told me that people come back a year later without a ticket and get mad at him when he can't find their item, but that's not what happened with me. I came several weeks after the drop off and I just couldn't find the ticket in my purse. (Honestly, it's happened several times in the past and it was never a problem.) He asked me what I had dropped off so he could try to find it. I told him and then he yelled at me "I don't even known what that means" and "that doesn't tell me anything." We eventually found the two pairs of shoes and I left in shock to get away from his anger. One pair of sandals needed a new sole cover because the old one was peeling. It looks like a child did the work- this is not what I have come to expect here. The second pair of shoes, suede pumps, were supposed to be stretched. They weren't stretched at all. I'm not sure what happened to cause this change but I'm not comfortable going back any more.

These sentiments go back 9 years and are not a coincidence. I recently dropped off a pair of Chanel sandals to replace the ~5-6mm thick lugged Vibram soles that were on them. The owner agreed to replace them with the exact same soles. Not only was the price 25% higher than what I pay for the exact same service in Manhattan, but the owner's volatile temper and work were unacceptable. The claim ticket had "Tuesday" circled with no calendar date. When I called the following Tuesday to confirm they were ready, he said he'd call me back. I politely offered to hold, and he completely freaked out, snapping that he was the only one working. He called back 2 minutes later with an incredibly condescending attitude, lecturing me, "You're looking at the ticket, which says Tuesday, and you're calling me to ask when it's ready for pick up. It's not ready until next Tuesday." When I pointed out that today was, in fact, Tuesday and his ticket didn't specify a date or week, he hung up. When I returned to the store, I discovered he didn't even use the original Vibram materials I dropped the shoes off with. He replaced my thick, durable soles (~5-6mm) with a much flatter, thinner alternative (~2-3mm). When I pointed out that these weren't the same soles, his behavior became entirely unreasonable. He condescendingly lectured me that it was *impossible* to put a thicker sole on this shoe, completely ignoring the reality that the shoes literally had ~5-6mm soles on them when I handed them to him. To top off the bizarre interaction, he then scolded me for being "rude" on the phone. I have to assume that he was referring to my reasonable offer to stay on hold. Paying a premium price for a bait-and-switch product and dealing with an aggressive, fragile ego is unacceptable. Take your shoes anywhere else.

Just moved from Manhattan where there are 20 better cobblers at half the price and double the quality. Wanted a local cobbler but this one is horrible on all fronts.
