Market Max is the closest gas station to the Bogue Chitto State Park. It is also the first gas…read morestation you encounter when entering the Town of Franklinton AKA The Fair City. The station has plenty of pumps, but is somewhat difficult to exit as it is in a curve in the roadway. OK. I could do like a lot of elites and just make that the end of my review. But I like to read my own words so I will expound a bit before clicking that little red post button at the bottom right of this page. I ended up at this station as a result of my failure to plan. I knew I was driving around to explore and should have fueled up earlier, but I got sidetracked finding a cemetery. After that detour I realized I was getting into low fuel territory. My Jeep keeps me apprised of how many miles I have till empty, but as I quickly learned, at some point it just says low fuel. This warning came on right as I was about to turn in to the state park so I knew I had better find a station quickly. Market Max was the closest place, but at around six miles away, I was a wee bit afraid I would learn how hard it is to push a Jeep in Louisiana hill country. Luckily for me, six miles is within low fuel warning range and I quickly filled up. This station is obviously very popular since it is one of the few places in the area. That meant a unique cross section of humanity was fueling at the same time as me. I saw bikers, cowboys, hippies, rednecks, old folks and one giant lummox. The cool thing was that despite all of the unique people, not once did I feel out of place. In summary, if you're around Franklinton and need gas, stop here.

Shan's Quick Stop - The sign

I am not sure who Shan is, but his/her quick stop is a full service station in the middle of…read morenowhere. Sometimes when I am driving I like to take the scenic route. This was the case last weekend when I was leaving a Yelp event and needed a place to stop. Shan's was like an oasis in the desert as I drove that winding road through the country. The gas station is quite large and has a lot of pumps. Entry and exit from the pumps is fairly easy with at least four entry/exit points to the nearby roadways. Inside the station is well stocked with drinks, oddities, and hot food. The bathrooms are clean, and the staff are friendly. So that pretty much sums it up, but I like to type so I will provide a little more detail. When I visited Shan's I really wanted one of those gas station sandwiches and an orange powerade. I easily found the orange powerade, but searched high and low for a sandwich to no avail. I did find a bunch of hot food, so I decided what the hell. With my drink I decided to give their cheeseburger and boudin balls a try. The boudin balls were awful. I don't know where theyget their boudin from, but it damn sure isn't Best Stop, Billy's, or The Nunu. This boudin was basically luke warm moist rice. Gross. The burger was about what I expected which is to say it reminded me of a high school cafeteria burger. The bun was fresh though and I wisely got ketchup and mayo packets so it wasn't horrible. Besides the food I also noticed they sell some of that quasi opiate natural mumbo jumbo behind the counter. I think that is a tad bit ridiculous, but hey, if you like bath salts, and want to eat someone's face off, I guess you might appreciate them selling it.

Stopped in for gas and a soft drink, but the smell of the Krispy Krunchy chicken refused to let me…read moreleave hungry. I had to grab some wings and some fried shrimp, then the door, because I was THIS CLOSE to taking some chicken with me, too! The place was clean, the employees were friendly, and the food was fresh and delicious.
