We learned that the course is under new management/ownership, and it shows. They either don't know how to make a course successful, or they don't care. Hopefully they just need some help. My sons and I are not strangers to great courses; much of my youth was spent at Exmoor, not far from my Glencoe home. After retiring 7 years ago, we made it our weekend mission to seek out exceptional par-3 courses in southern Wisconsin. That's when we found SPRING CREEK. Besides the challenge of the course, we were--and continued to be until recently--impressed with the pristine greens, the knowledgeable and friendly staff, the pride in ownership, and the vibe of the entire place. We started to see negative changes last year, which have been more noticeable this year. For starters, the greens need significant improvement. The bar and bathrooms are grungy. And sometimes, when we showed up, the staffing seemed to be short-handed. I don't want to knock college kids, but as employees they just don't seem to know what they're doing, and their frustration shows. Maybe coincidental, but the owner(s?) never seems to be on site when we are there, contrary to our experience over the previous years. There's too much focus on glitzy stuff, and not enough attention on the core basics. We've become friends with several long-time course players, all locals. They're growing frustrated, and some have called it quits. I hope the new management finds their mojo soon before it's too late. SPRING CREEK has a history of being an exceptional course, at least in our eyes. Maybe I'm being too critical, but I'm too old to sugar coat what we've experienced at this course. Golf is my passion, and life is too short to settle for mediocrity ... so, we are moving on. During my 22 years as a small business consultant and coach, I helped many companies recover. What was their common thread to success? Management hungered to improve. Best of luck, SPRING CREEK. Make it a special place again ... lots of folks are hoping so. David C.

I've been fortunate to play more courses than the average golfer and I want to like this course but…read moreI really have to dislike it. The course design is really the issue with that. It offers a really challenging layout with a lot do fun holes where you have to place shots and know when and where to be aggressive. It's unlike a lot of courses in that regard. However, the issue is that some of these holes fall back to back and then pace of play is a HUGE issue here. I've never played around round even close to 4 hours. I'm a pretty big pace of play proponent and the only time a range has ever said anything was to chastise our group for holding up pace of play when we were waiting for more than 10 minutes too tee off on both of the previous holes. They need to do a better job understanding how to manage a tee sheet and when to have a ranger pushing on folks. If I knew that it wouldn't be bad, I'd love to play here, but I think I'm drawing a line the next time a friend suggests it.

The front and back nine have a very different feel; I believe that they were designed by two separate people. The front nine is mostly in a wide open prairie setting and the back almost exclusively in the woods; duh! It really is a pretty course and a little bit of a hike, but very walkable. I'm always surprised at my score as the course plays easier than it appears and the greens are pretty forgiving. The course is very well maintained and probably one of the better public courses in the area. The staff is friendly and the bar serves a very good Friday Fish Fry with a small, but great salad bar. I think that they have a golf and dine deal on Friday's as well. There are also good deals for golf during the spring and fall. Gripes: There is no starter or ranger, so things can sometimes get a little slow. They also space the tee times every eight minutes which I find to be a little close, but manageable. That said, I have found that there are certain times of the day that you can pretty much have the course to yourself, but that will remain my secret. In summary Prairie Woods is very picturesque course and almost always a pleasure to play and a great option for most of Walworth and Rock Counties.

She often insists on using her family discount when I check in, though I've never expected it. Today, I mentioned it at the counter and the staff applied it without issue--until a man in the back of the shop, who turned out to be the head golf pro, made a snide comment along the lines of, "That's not going to happen again." When I asked what he meant, instead of explaining respectfully, he pulled out a rule book and made a point to tell me I'm technically not on the membership and wouldn't be getting the discount anymore. It wasn't just what he said--it was how he said it: dismissive, patronizing, and unnecessarily public. I've never been rude here, and I've spent plenty of money at this course over the years. The whole interaction left a bad taste in my mouth. Even stranger, after that exchange, my cart's GPS was suddenly disabled--something I couldn't help but notice. Add in the fact that there was trash on multiple holes and it's clear the experience, and the course itself, just isn't what it used to be. Lake lawn used to be a place I loved, I won't be going back anytime soon.

It's on a family resort so of course the caliber of player isn't going to be the same as at Geneva National, but that's also kind of the point. My buddies and I played 36 here this past weekend. It's a fairly easy course- but it's in excellent condition this year considering the COVID crisis and the # of people playing daily. We found the facilites great, the staff were exceptional, and the golf was really fun. The course is in outstanding condition- it's really well maintained. Yeah, the course can occasionally get backed up, but the girls driving the beer cart come around constantly. For like $55 for 18 with a cart, it's a good price. It's not Geneva National, but it's not supposed to be. I'll definitely play here again- and a huge hat tip to everyone working here- just the nicest, most hospitable group I've seen on a golf course in forever.

Placing an approach shot in the right green level is a must to avoid 3 putts. Overall the golf course is beautiful and challenging. Our experience however was not very nice. As we are turning into the back 9 they decided to shotgun an outing right in front of us. They simply asked us to bypass 10 and play it after completing the round (more about this to come). We thought the outing was teeing off behind us, but to our surprise the outing was teeing off on 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14. We were playing with the outing!. That was chaotic, and no ranger to be seeing. This created a slow play situation that turned dangerous as outing players started to loose their patience and kept hitting golf balls that landed way too close for comfort. The fact there was an outing scheduled was not mentioned when we called for a reservation, or when we arrived at the clubhouse. It was a "surprise" at the turn. Once we completed holes 11-18 there were two foursomes, one teeing off and another waiting on Hole 10. I truly wonder if anybody is coordinating golfers in the course and for sure customer service is deficient at best. When we finished they were courteous but did not try to remedy their mistake. We paid to play 18 holes, called for a reservation and they decided to put an large outing on top of us without telling us and offered no apologies or restitution for their mistake. We traveled far to play Glen Erin, and left with a bad impression. I will not travel to Glen Erin as their reservation system means nothing, and they don't care about customer experience. I wish I can give a better rating as the golf course has potential.
