    Emerald Cave

This is an awesome spot just about 1.5 hours outside of Vegas if you're looking to hit the water! I usually launch my paddle boards here and head toward the Hoover Dam. You do have to pay a fee to get in, but if you plan on coming more than once it's more cost efficient to buy a yearly pass! Along the way, you'll pass the historic ruins of a house, complete with a plaque detailing its history. You can still see the pulleys, wooden walkways along the rocks, and a watchtower. Fun fact: this was the original site planned for the Hoover Dam, but it was moved upstream due to a visible fault line! Emerald Cave is about an hour paddle upstream, and the water inside is absolutely beautiful (check out the video I attached for @trashclvss). Across the river, there's also Echo Cave, which is worth exploring. There are plenty of spots to pull off and hang out, plus lots of rocks to jump from! Keep in mind, the water is always cold, but after a few jumps in and out, your body adjusts. Be sure to look at the mountains, there are frequently mountain goats there!! It's always such a fun adventure exploring the Colorado River!

Our first visit here to kayak for an afternoon definitely won't be our last! We had such a great day here. We rented kayaks for the afternoon and went down to emerald cave. We had never kayaked before, but were able to learn it easily and make it to from the marina to the cave and back in less than 3 hours. The kayak to the cave was harder and took longer than the way back fyi. The cave is small but beautiful. Along the way we saw so much wildlife, including gray fox and bighorn sheep. We also saw many birds in the greenery next to the river including some warblers, canyon wren, ravens and ducks. There are lovely beaches with some walks along the way, but we didn't have time to stop. I recommend renting kayaks all day if you want to take your time and do more exploring.

Family of 5 staying in Las Vegas - decided to take a day trip to Hoover Dam followed by a small boat rental from Willow Beach. We reserved the Mako 17' fishing boat for the day. What a fun day!!! I purchased fishing licenses online... we cruised the beautiful river, kids fished, we beached the boat and ate our lunch. The kids braved the cold water temps. It was a wonderful day. I would highly recommend this company. They made the process easy... very helpful and friendly staff. If ever in the nearby area again I would do this over again.

Willow beach is a great summer getaway for the day! We've already been twice this summer and enjoy the whole day out there. About an hour drive from Vegas. We usually try to get there by 8ish to land a good spot next to the water. Set up some tents, chairs and a grill- perfect water day! It's very clean, has ample parking nearby and a restroom. Make sure you bring all supplies needed to chill for the day as there isnt really anything accommodating near by. I think there is a small general store but I haven't been in there. Great spot for the family and friends!

Amazing moment after a long day; nice portions of food a nice and friendly waiter. We had an amazing time enjoying the sunset.

Had so much fun here celebrating my anniversary! Paddle boarding was perfect can't wait to be back soon! 10/10 recommend to anyone that loves the water and views!

I skipped all 2024 here and came back 6/2025... Now I remember the issues here. Water is really cold even on a hot day. Red ants. The last straw that made us finally leave was a damn snake about 3-4 feet's long‍ I just happen to see and it went it a bush that was on the way up from the little hill to walk about to get out from the water area. Theres absolutely no reception here even with a portable WiFi box. I don't think we will be back here again. Water is beautiful and clear.. but again it's so darn cold, make it's uncomfortable and the darn red ants‍also you have to pay a fee at entrance.

There is a lot to like here. The harbor is really nice. Easy to find a place to hang out and the trip upstream to go see the emerald caves has some amazing views. The store in the harbor is reasonabley priced. Only real knock here is the restaurant grill is pretty rough and it gets a bit crowded with kids running around acting a fool.

K - ick Ass A - dventurous Y - ahoo A - ctive K - eeled Willow Beach is a great place to launch your kayaks as it sits right on the mighty Colorado River. Depending on the time of year, the weather can be very hot or just perfect. On this trip we had an 83 degree day and light wind. Willow Beach Harbor (should be marina not harbor) is located just across Hoover Dam in the state of Arizona. It is within the Black Canyon region and has over 235 miles of shoreline to explore. Lots of parking, a convenience store, picnic areas, boat launch area and a campground. I have kayaked here twice now. The first time, my friend and I rented a double kayak from the marina. I believe we paid $130 for the day. They also have single kayaks, canoes, paddle boards, and small boats to rent. This time I went with my bestie who owns two single kayaks. The key is to arrive early morning. The reason is unfortunately, there are way too many tour groups accessing the water now and it can become crowded which stinks if you are seeking some serenity on the river. The first time I went there was not a lot of people but this last time it was a bit extreme. Lots to see once you are out on the water like old equipment from mining days, wildlife such as bighorn sheep and the beautiful Emerald Cove. We were lucky enough to see an incredible bald eagle which is rare. You can kayak all the way up to Hoover Dam but it is 12 miles so get ready to work. You can also kayak to the Arizona Hot Springs Beach which is a little over six miles up river. You will find many beaches along the way where you can pull in, have lunch and take in all the epic views. It's very peaceful out there and the water is pristine. So clear but definitely cold. Near the shore the water is warmer but the deeper you go it will wake you up quickly. Be sure to wear water shoes, bring sunscreen, quick dry shorts, a long sleeve rash guard, bathing suit, and a big hat. Plenty of water is a must plus food. Oh and most importantly a life jacket! I highly recommend getting out here and experiencing the Colorado River at its finest. This can be family affair, a couples or friends day or a solo adventure. It's up to you but there is nothing like it. Always remember to Leave No Trace!

STUNNING! My family and I booked a reservation to camp and canoe. When we arrived we checked in for our campsite and the staff was very helpful and friendly. They directed us on where to go and we set up camp for the day. There are places to park and you can get out and explore the water. You can see the marina where they have the boats, kayaks, canoes, and paddle boards. The next day we went back to check in for the canoe rental. The same staff members were there and they helped us get checked in and gave us all the needed information for checking in and being on the water. They also provided us with a map and told us of the popular places to stop. We went down the ramp and they helped us get in the canoe and provided us with the life jackets as well. It was absolutely beautiful being on the water. There was a spot where we stopped while canoeing where we were able to get in the water and swim. It was definitely more difficult paddling back than heading out. It was not too busy in the morning but as it got closer to the afternoon we saw a lot more people on the water and the tours. We will be back for sure!

We made an unplanned stop here for lunch that we had packed and this place is gorgeous. The water was crystal clear and it was the perfect place to picnic. There is a store here with lots of souvenirs, but they also had beers for $1.50. I could not believe it since they are a federal store, alcohol is cheap without the taxes. Too bad we don't drink beer! The folks working in the shop had lots of information to share. This looks to be a great place to fish and there were kayaks for rent. It is worth the stop if you are visiting the Hoover Dam.

Nice to cool off on hot summer

Had an amazing summer at Willlow Beach must bring your water shoes the water is rocky you will hurt you feet without your aqua shoes..

Gorgeous kayaking spot with magical water that "glows" emerald green at high noon. However, not for the faint of heart on windy days as the trek back up the river will definitely test your upper body strength!!! There's an entry fee if you don't already have a national parks pass--get the annual pass if you hit up at least a couple of national parks throughout each year. I'm not sure what the fee is off the top of my head since I have a pass. Bring sunscreen--I regularly wear tanning oil and still come out with lobster legs. Also, I just found out inflatable PFDs are a thing, which is great if you're petite like me and want to take photos without a giant life vest overwhelming your frame! (Check with your tour operator if they permit you bringing your own PFD though.) Ope, and get here early if possible! This spot--like many spots in the area--become heavily trafficked, tourist traps later in the day.

This experience was completely different in the best way. Being able to get out of the river and be steps away from hot springs was amazing, and the views from the water are hands down the best. We met the team bright and early at 5:30am for launch, and everything was super smooth. They shuttled us, got us fitted for life jackets, handled waivers, and gave a quick safety rundown. Launch timing is strict because of the park service, but they made it feel easy and not stressful at all. Definitely be on time, though, because due to this strict timing, they will leave without you. The kayaks were such a game-changer. They were longer touring kayaks with foot-controlled rudders, dry storage, and actual back support. Super comfortable for me and somehow also worked great for my 6'2" husband (he had a larger boat). Since it was just the two of us, our guide Holmes customized the whole day to our pace. He took us to hidden spots I had never seen before, even as a local, and helped us avoid crowds. We did some hiking, rock scrambling, used ropes at Boy Scout Canyon, and explored hot springs that you can only get to from the river. It felt adventurous but still very safe, and he gave great tips the whole time. He also knew so much about the area. History of the Hoover Dam, plants, wildlife, etc. I learned a ton - even as someone who felt familiar with the area. This is exactly why I'm glad we didn't just rent kayaks. Having a guide made it feel like a next-level experience. We got to relax more while he handled the route and found the best spots. We got lucky with perfect early April weather. No wind, super glassy water, and we could see fish deep in the water. The 12 miles honestly felt way easier than expected, especially with how well Holmes guided us through the current so we could just float and chill a lot of the time. They also packed a great lunch, snacks, and plenty of water. You really just need a sun shirt, hat, sunglasses, swimsuit, water shoes, and sunscreen. They take care of the rest. Even though we leaned a little more adventurous, I could totally see this being doable for beginners, too. You don't need to be super athletic to enjoy it. Pickup and cleanup were easy and seamless. They handled everything while I grabbed a snack and relaxed, which honestly made it feel even more special. This was such a cool experience, and I would 100% do it again. Already recommending it to friends, and I would definitely consider doing the overnight version next time.

We were told that the raft could hold about 32 people, but we were lucky because on tour we had a total of 17, which was nice. We were also given a bag with snacks and a bottle of water, which was great to snack on during the tour. We met our driver at the Hoover Dam lodge. There was a lot of parking available, which made it easy. Our driver was super friendly and very informative. He took us to the raft to meet our tour guide. Our tour guide wasn't welcoming to my husband and I, but as other guests loaded onto the raft, his attitude changed. As we started the tour we stayed at the same spot for 30 minutes. Our guide passed out pictures in sheet protectors and began sharing about the history of the Hoover dam. Throughout the tour, our guide was testing us about our history. We didn't know much of it, that's why we attended the tour to learn. The best part of the tour was us getting out of the raft and landing on a piece of land to touch the water and skip rocks and take more photos. It was nice to see a few mini waterfalls and even a hot spring! I did wished we went deeper into the dam, but I guess that would've been for the longer tour. Also, I wish we could've swam in the lake, but it was very chilly. It was a great experience, however, the initial encounter with our guide was uncomfortable. We learned a lot and the views were amazing.

Really nice guy and very knowledgeable about the area. Our driver Micheal was also fantastic and helped get us oriented to the dam as we took the drive from the meet up point to the boat. Would highly recommend this tour, especially if you need to get away from the craziness of the strip for an afternoon. We did the hour and a half tour, but I think we will come back for the three hour.

I remember when it was full truly full back in its heyday, when it stood as the largest reservoir in the United States, born from the mighty Hoover Dam and fed by the Colorado River like a beating heart in the desert. It wasn't just water out there... it was life. The kind of place families planned entire summers around. The kind of place that meant something. Our family didn't just "go" to Lake Mead we made a journey out of it. A couple days on the road, anticipation building mile by mile, until finally, there it was. We'd spend a week out there, soaking it all in. And I'll never forget those spring breaks. The sun high, music playing somewhere in the distance, boats cutting across the water, laughter echoing off canyon walls. Girls in bikinis everywhere and I was just a young man coming into my own, thinking every single one of them was the most beautiful woman I'd ever seen. It felt like the whole world was alive, and somehow, I was right in the middle of it. Back then, the water... it had a color you almost couldn't describe without sounding like you were exaggerating. Turquoise one minute, blue-green the next, shifting with the sunlight like it had moods of its own. The desert wrapped around it, rugged and raw, but the lake softened everything. It brought people together. You couldn't find a place to park half the time, and nobody cared. That was part of it. People shoulder to shoulder, coolers open, music playing, drinks in hand, strangers becoming friends for a weekend. It felt affordable, accessible... like it belonged to all of us. It felt like America. And now... now it feels like something else entirely. These days, when I pass by Lake Mead, it doesn't greet me the same way. The shoreline has pulled back like a memory fading. What was once shimmering and alive now looks cracked, dry, almost forgotten in places brown where it used to glow. The "bathtub ring" carved into the canyon walls isn't just a mark of water levels it's a scar. A reminder of what used to be there. It's hard not to feel like something's been taken. Whether it's overuse, growth, decisions made in rooms far away, or just time itself catching up whatever the cause, it's left behind a shell of what once was. A place that used to be bursting with life now feels like somewhere people go to remember instead of live. You don't go there the same way anymore. You visit it like a piece of history. And that's what hurts the most. Because I think about bringing my kids there today... and it's not the same gift my grandpa gave me. Not even close. What was once a living, breathing escape now feels like something we're quietly burying. Not gone but not what it was. And maybe never will be again. Still, I can close my eyes and see it. The color of that water. The sound of laughter. The feeling of being young, sunburned, a little wild, thinking the world was wide open and I was somebody in it. Lake Mead gave me that. And for that, no matter what it looks like today... I'll always love it.
